I agree somewhat to what russell says, but on the other hand there is a smooth jazz genre which caters kinda to the easy listening mode of jazz in my opinion. i myself love listening to challenging chord changes and harmonies and a soloist having the ability to be as expressive as he/she wants over those changes and then at times being as simple or basic over them also, but for some that might just be getting into jazz at times it can be overwhelming
Great points by this titan of Jazz. One of the problems is that many young, talented musicians, are drawn to Jazz because they are under the mistaken impression it is a completely intellectual music with no boundaries on how a given artist may express themselves. They are attracted to its difficulty, and use the music as a medium for challenging themselves and others, but Jazz really isn't that. Jazz is a style, not a laboratory for analysis, experimentation and self-conscious "innovation."
Young black musicians interested in connecting with people have gone into "gospel" music and/or ditched jazz altogether which has become academic and requires proving yourself in an institution to the "masters" before you have a career . The critics and jazz promoters look down on "fusion" music or similar crossover type of music that might appeal to people . Jazz musicians these days rarely play current pop tunes like cannonball used to . The end result is an academic music .
