Set up many Claymores while on patrol on the Korea DMZ. Common to place a sandbag over ignitor when checking. While uncommon, it was possible for the fuse to fire during testing. I'll never forget the ass chewing I got one afternoon before a night ambush when I was checking out a Claymore. I casually dropped a sandbag onto the fuse instead of placing it gently on top of the fuse and my Squadleader had a shit fit. When you handle explosives regularly, it's easy to get complacent. =)

i never heard of anybody pointing one the wrong way but there's an inline test device that you connect to "test" the circuit prior to waiting for an enemy.

it is to be used from a position of COVER.

if there is a malfunction, you need to GO ALL THE WAY BACK to the mine and re-check the connection at the blasting cap and maybe re-crimp another cap.

if you "test" AT THE MINE you can save yourself some time but maybe die too.

Its curved and as for making mistakes, that was what the problem was and that is why "Front Towards Enemy" was put on there.  It was a reaction to events where they were placed out with the killing area directed towards the firer. Lots of fun when that went bang! And no, I dont need to be told by a 30 yr old. By the time I was 30, I`d done 15yrs service.

What's scary is how easy it is to manufacture Claymore mines in your garage. So simple, so effective. I work at an Ordnance plant and in the 60's a small "subcontractor" in our little county made Claymores for the US Army. A little research shows that we used 80,000 Claymores a month in Vietnam in 1968-69. At least they're not dangerous after the war like many landmines deployed by us and the VC/NVA. They will f*ck up your evening patrols!!
