Love it!!! How long did it actually take to do the painting? The video is only 3 1/2 minutes. I was just curious. Thanks, Duane. Love your work, all of it!
Bravo! This is amazing. You have some awesome talent. And nerves too! (As an unartistic type, I can't imagine painting over the focus of a painting like you did - and so many times too!)
I totally "get" this and loved watching the painting evolve. Now I have to go find and orange. Your animation was brilliant, the technique exciting and the result a delight.
WHOAH!! That was totally amazing. The simplicity mixed with the complexity along withsome great talent are obviouslya great combo for some fantastic work.
It's amazing to see how a few seemingly simple strokes can massively increase an object's definition... especially to someone without an artistic bone in his body, such as myself.
This was wonderful, Duane. It is also interesting as a metaphor for "where you began" in your painting, the journey that ensued, and the current "result" of that journey. Your ability to "texture" the paint in interesting ways via your brushwork is also amazing. Thank you so much for sharing this. Would you mind sharing the type of brush that you are using and your thought process in making that choice? Your marks and "shapes" are very organic despite the flatness of the brush!!!!
I generally use Robert Simmons Titanium line of brushes. They are synthetic (or a mix?.) They are soft but firm and they hold their shape well. They can also take a beating before they start to fray. I use to use only rounds but now I probably use flats half the time. I use the flats to cut across forms and control edges.
WOW -- this was really fun to watch! I got anxious when you made the first thumb swipe at the top of the orange, but then had less and less anxiety with each successive removal of the image and rather enjoyed watching you chisel the segment from the orange. So, did you find the "painting within" through this process? Or was the process the product?? HUGE fan, KIM :o)
@wer0ne2 Thank you. I had a very general path planned but had a few detours along the way. It's kind of a performance piece but I did want the end result to exist on its own too.
I liked this very much!! Thank-you!! I only hope that the use of your thumb is actually much less, considering the possible dangers to oneself regarding the chemicals in the paints.
@duanekeiser as far as I know the only risk with wet paint is ingestion or it getting into a cut, I believe you have to let it sit for a really long time for it to seep through pores...or something of that nature.
Thanks for posting this. I'm a big fan of your work, and it's really cool to see your process-- especially in such a playful way. Keep bringing out the extraordinary in the ordinary :)

your paint seems very fluid, what Medium do you use with your oil paints? 5*'s
thedankinfidel 11 months ago
@thedankinfidel I actually used very little medium for this as it was done in one sitting. I used a 1-1-1 mix of turps, venetian turps and stand oil.
