This is a pretty good depiction how it really went in Tibet. But the reality was much more awfull. Approx 1 mill. Tibetans, monks and nuns were tortured in the most unhumane ways and killed. 2/3 of all monasteries destroyed. Mao invaded Tibet for it's strategical position, land and resources. Tibetans are now minority in their own land, they aren't allowed to leave it, many try to escape to India. China gets rich from Tibetan resources, tourist attractions and migrations of Hans.
I find it amusing that so many people immediately jump to the conclusion that a film is "American" if they find it offensive. I am an American, and though I don't always agree our method of handling things, it is incredibly ignorant to attribute that to our nationality. Apart from that, although Brad Pitt is an American actor, this movie's director is French, David Thewlis (Peter) is British, and the author of the novel was German. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to look up basic facts.
@DRGgang2 they should have quit a mess of weapon in china at that time : from japan, tchangkaîchek army (american weapons such as M3) and russia of course;
@americanjedi77 humans can't help it, we have a natural thirst for power and warfare. When it's stronger in some parts of the world, naturally it is far lesser in other regions. For example, the Chinese are hungry for power, Tibet is hungry for peace; it's just a coincidence that they border each other.
@chrisnasif You're making shit up, chrisnasif; I am human and I have no thirst for power or war. In fact, I would say if anything the thirst for power and warfare is a mental illness or a behavioral trait that is unfortunately cultivated in the west or way too many humans. We are acculturated to believe that warriors are great--i.e. Alexander the Great, Herod the Great, sorry I can't think of others, but the point is that none of these men were great.
@americanjedi77 As much as tibet lived in relative peace, but you have to realize that they were not the shining pinnacle of goodness. Tibet, for centuries, was a fairly oppressive theocracy with a very short hard lifespan for the peasants and opulence for the lamas. Not to say they were evil. They definitely had an exemplary way of life. The point is, no civilization is perfect.
The war did happen and the Tibetans lost their country completely in 1959 to the Communist Chinese with over millions of Tibetans that were tortured and massacred. Today, Tibet is part of China but not as the Chinese govn't would like people to believe. They say that Tibet has been part of China for "thousands of yrs" but Tibet has been colonized for only 60 yrs. That is a huge difference...so my point again.....the war DID happen
Sahajad, just what the hell is your issue with Americans? Who the fuck do you think you are to be preaching to everyone on this site when it's just about guaranteed that they KNOW how Americans are and they don't need you to tell them how we are. Pull the stick out of your ass and quit commenting if the damn movie is making you so unhappy jackass!
In actual life this war did not happen since the Tibetans in their true Buddhist spirit surrendered to the Chinese, following their doctrine of Non violence.
So like a true American please stop being ignorant and learn some history for God sake !
And like a true American, please do not use filthy langauge on the web site. That is very uncouth !
What is with you Americans ! You cannot write a statement , make a film or even a pop song without using filthy language !
Get off your high horse, because that's just the way life is. If you can't change it, leave it alone. The movie is done, nothing you say can change that. Like I said before, if you don't like the movie quit watching it and ruining the experience for others by making rude and derogatory statements.
Don't hate on Americans just because of how you perceive them. Not all of us are like that, and you should know better.
You are just as arrogant as you perceive us Americans to be.
I know that the movie is done but still we can comment on it freely ! Every one has commented on it if you go on checking the previous comments , you shall see.
Beg your pardon, I cannot quit watching this movie as I have already completed in watching it !
If I hate Americans it is not because how I perceive them, but it is how they present themselves to the world . You just now did it freely by using very bad language on the web !
For the Dalai Lama, his lament would not be long. He would find more friends than he knew he had. And so would Tibet.
For Hienrich, he was of the people who followed such evil, and later awoke from such a nightmare. He was of the people who'd committed such atrocities upon the world, and so who better to deliver the mesaage of correction?
If the Dalai Lama is the Prince of Peace, than is Heinrich to be his Peter?
It is Hierich Harrer's Life-Mission to show the world who these people are, and to bring forth the message of the Dalai Lama. He was to help insure neither Tibet, it's people, it's culture, nor the Dalai Lama himself was not to dissapear into the obscurity wished by the tyrants, to be buried under the weight of oppression. He would also to show the world just how much more advanced in life, and living these people were compared to our own lives and culture, despite their primative technology.
The Demon itself died, at either it's own hands, or by the prolonged, and long-overdue realization of it's followers that they must stop this madness, but the evil it started shifted to take new forms, and new hosts to inhabit itself within. It still persists with us to this day.
In 1888, a Demon was loosed upon the world, that brought forth the worst of hatred, and cruelty, and from this insanity it began to accelerate, and carried forth an industrialized savagery that although sometimes slowed, plowed forth upon the weaker peoples of the world.

how ironic that there so much racial conflict attatched to the comments of a movie about the Dalai Lama and Bhuddhism of all things...

You seem pretty foolish considering two things:
1. You actually seem to believe in generalizing nationalist stereotypes.
2. You are suggesting that these scenes depicted are inaccurate. You can read the Dalai Lama's autobiography for yourself to see otherwise.
superdog797 1 year ago 3
There was fighting, however. Many Tibetans were killed, and some Chinese. Those who fought for Tibetan independence were often killed and tortured.
