As a matter of fact I have read the book. But I was talking about ALW's adaptation and there I've always liked Erik better than Raoul ever since I was a little girl... The connection of Christine and Erik holds so much more potential
Gerard Butler may not have the best voice of all, oh cmon his emotion to the character showed no bounds! he portrayed the phantom's seductive and low voice very very well, imho! i really dont like the other skinny-voice phantoms..
@leedaine the phantom doesn't have a "seductive and low voice". he's supposed to be a tenor, and his voice in the novel is described as both "beautiful and horrifying". micheal crawford's version best suits this.

My favorite Phantom is Gerard Butler. His voice is so deep and ahhh I melt when I hear him sing. next is Ramin. I really didn't like Michael Crawford at all. His voice sounded too high and mechanical almost. Not dark or sexy at all.
I hope you guys realize that singers sometimes get sick or have bad days where their voices just don't want to function (especially sopranos) so they can't always perfectly hit high notes. She was probably getting over a cold that night, and didn't want to strain her vocal chords. So just chill about it, it was probably better for it to be recorded.
Jenny, there's always some not-ready-for-prime time critic or a frustrated actor or singer whose ready to pounce on any performer who doesn't hear or see something delivered along the lines of his expectations. IK think the important thing is that ALW really enjoyed the duet. My guess is the guy who didn't like this saw it after his 52nd bottle of Sam Adams during a lost weekend.

Good grief I don't think Gina could have made it more obvious that she was pre recorded... at least for those last notes. And she didn't sing the top E you can hear how loud she sings the other notes then all of a sudden it goes very quiet with the last note. And for goodness sake leave Gerard Butler alone, he did a fantastic job his voice just isn't a musical theatre voice but his acting was fantastic. But personally he is my fav Phantom and I love the edginess and rock sound to his voice!

For god's sake, a man who lived most of his life beneath an opera house isn't gonna sing like a West Ender! The musical theatre style just isn't what Phantom is supposed to be about, so having him singing in the bel canto style was, in my opinion, a refreshing change.
@meginmd And not to mention, Gerard was really the ACTOR who was needed. Erik is a very charismatic person, and that needs to be conveyed not just with the voice but with the body, and Butler was the guy for that.
Besides, let's be real. I've read the Leroux. Luciano Pavarotti himself couldn't sing the way Erik could, so since actually having the right voice is impossible, why not choose a voice that represents the character in color and timbre rather than aiming for beauty alone?

Ramin Karimloo IS the Phantom of the opera, he is perfect. His voice is so powerful and amazing...brilliant actor too, and a lovely man just to top it off. HE IS INCREDIBLE! :D

How many Phantoms have you seen? I saw Crawford's back in '88 at the Majestic and since, Davis Gaines, Howard McMillan, Anthony Warlowe, John Cudia, Hugh Panaro, and a few others whose name escapes me. Each was wonderful and brought their share of ther audience to tears. I personally thought Crawford's acting was among the best but vocally not in the same league as Warlowe, McMillan, or Panaro. I've given you four actors who "could make the audience cry". Want another five?
He is amazing! I bought Love Never Dies soundtrack as soon as it was out. I'm depressed that I live on the West Coast. I'll probably never get to see him live. Huff! Oh, well. I can still dream and drool. ^_^

He has grown on me a LOT and he's awesome! I really was missing the non-operatic ways of Michael Crawford and Colm Wilkinson, but Ramin does an AMAZING job at combining the rock and opera. No wonder Andrew Lloyd Webber picked him for the sequel.

Ramin is quite possibly the best Phantom there ever has been. He has the beautiful vocals along with that rock and roll edge Andrew Lloyd Webber has always wanted in the Phantom. But he doesn't get carried away with it, which makes him absolutely brilliant, plus he's ever SO gorgeous!!

She was offered cover Christine in Love Never Dies but chose Phantom as it was her first job out of college and was a guaranteed show at the time when LND was hit or miss if it would carry on!! :)

@ShadowinEX Ramin is a really good phantom but do not even try to compare him with Michael Crawford... sorry but he has to be out of discussion only for being the first phantom and specially because of his passionate performances... i would like you to find any other phantom who could make the audience cry and make them believe that he actually have just lost the love of his life... and well the phantom is not expected to be sexy after all

How many Phantoms have you seen? I saw Crawford's back in '88 at the Majestic and since, Davis Gaines, Howard McMillan, Anthony Warlowe, John Cudia, Hugh Panaro, and a few others whose name escapes me. Each was wonderful and brought their share of ther audience to tears. I personally thought Crawford's acting was among the best but vocally not in the same league as Warlowe, McMillan, or Panaro. I've given you four actors who "could make the audience cry". Want another five?

His talking voice is so soft and beautiful, but when he sings, it just blasts, it's so fascinating! I absolutely love the sound of it.

He is amazing! I bought Love Never Dies soundtrack as soon as it was out. I'm depressed that I live on the West Coast. I'll probably never get to see him live. Huff! Oh, well. I can still dream and drool. ^_^

I saw Ramin as Phantom in both Phantom of the Opera and Love Never Dies. He is with out a doubt the best phantom no matter what.

@reoneill33 ONLY for Ramin's and Sierria's Voice!...other than that its just fanfictional crap. this is from a girl who did her research, baught the soundtrack traveled to london to see the damn show and very nearly walked out! the STORY is shit...but the show production wise is good...and actors are great. story i repeat it fantictional crap. ONLY for people who want the two to get to gather...which is not what phantom is about! sorry had to get that out! i do love Ramin's voice! so lovely!

But I've never liked Raoul...simple as that, nor would i choose him simply because he is young and rich and fortunate enough not to be different

He has grown on me a LOT and he's awesome! I really was missing the non-operatic ways of Michael Crawford and Colm Wilkinson, but Ramin does an AMAZING job at combining the rock and opera. No wonder Andrew Lloyd Webber picked him for the sequel.
The way he sings "... my power over you.." totally won me over.

i think Gerad Butler makes a really good phantom as well (hands down just my opinion ) However ramin is a very good phantom as well and i would't have a problem in him being the phantom . God this is such a powerfull song <3

Ramin is quite possibly the best Phantom there ever has been. He has the beautiful vocals along with that rock and roll edge Andrew Lloyd Webber has always wanted in the Phantom. But he doesn't get carried away with it, which makes him absolutely brilliant, plus he's ever SO gorgeous!!

Gina is phenominal... you need to see Katy Treharne do it! She is out of this world! Rocks the role! Go see her, find out when she is on! Trust me you wont regret it :D
She was offered cover Christine in Love Never Dies but chose Phantom as it was her first job out of college and was a guaranteed show at the time when LND was hit or miss if it would carry on!! :)
