  • DIVINITY ! IS IT YOU MOTHER ?

    DR PATHY

  • IAfter listening to "Akhilandeshwari..." I made up my mind to visit the temple. After having darshan & pooja I sang that song. It is all due to the impact of listening to MSS. Daily I wake & aspire to get knowledge from the goddess of knowledge.I have made it a habit to listen to the great singer MSS in the wee hours of the day.

  • Wow. I just look at her and tears roll down my eyes.. deeivaa kalai ..she is god!.

  • look at her it is like as if godess saraswati herself singing

  • Wonderful.

As usual, the contributor does not credit the artists or the art. So, nobody knows who is singing or what is being sung.

On Youtube, the viewers arew from all over the world. Everybody does not recognize the artist unless you tell them and explain everything.

Please tell us in detail, Who sings, what song, on what date, where, on what occasion, who are the accompaniying artists etc.

  • I liked this kriti so much that I went to Akhilandeshwari temple all the way from my place about 1000km and sang at the temple. At that time two images were before me: Matha Akhilandeshwari and MS!

  • Listening to MS Subbulakshmi, feels like Samadhi is just a note away...

  • This was a a song that Muthuswamy Dikistar sang as his last composition befiore his death

  • this is awesome!!!!!

  • my favorite song. So beautiful...

  • I was hels by her when baby

  • @MegaPunch1 She visited our home in Chennai a few years back. Was a great honour.

  • Paradise on earth, God bless her soul, for gifting us this divine music.

  • M.S. is so wonderful. She puts me into a blissful trance almost immediately. Those instruments also.

  • the actual name for this raga according to the sangeeta makaranda, ramamatya and other scholars is Dwijayavanti (One who is twice victorious). In the north it changed to Jayajayavanti, whilst in the south the raga nomenclature changed to Dwijavanti. The name "Jujavanti" can easily be taken as an apabhramsha of Dwijavanti.

  • I had always thought 'Dvijavanti' meant the raga of the twice-born, the 'Dvija'. Your etymology seems more plausible considering it is called 'Jayajayavanti' in Hindustani tradition.

  • @dheerajiitkgp ,

The songs of Muthuswami Dikshitar in this raga are towards Sri Meenakshi and most are towards Durga/Parvathy only....therefore "Jajajayavanti (Victory)" seems appropriate.... If it was "Dvijavanti" then it would have to do with Sri Saraswati ...or knowledge etc according to me....

Therefore "Jayajayavanti" is the right one.....

  • I am blessed to listen to this song, especially from the devine singer.

  • Ms is such a beacon of deep spirituality and her life is an examle of simple devotion to the lord and we have to emulate her if we want to reach the spiritual height that she reached...by unquestioning Bhakti.

  • can you please tralslate this

  • The ragam is jujwanthi as per dikshitar school. But it is dwijawanti as per usage.

Similarly poorvikalyani is called gamakakriya in dikshitar's school

  • yep you are right and correct example for this raagam is meenakshi mae mudham dehi of Dikshithar

  • no..... the ragam is jujavanthi or jayjayvanthi as it is how dikshitar called ... dwijavanthi is name for the song derived later

  • I think its jujawanthi Raga and not Dwijavanthi. I have book of Dikshithar krithis in which I checked the raaga

  • There's no raga as "jujawanthi" as far as i know.. this raga is dwijavanthi. it comes in the charanam "jambhari sambhanuthe, janartananute, dwijavanti raganuthe". She does pronounce it as jujawanthi though.

  • as I told you i have a book of dikshithar krithis and if you look into MSS lip movement, you will find that its jujawanthi and also there is a video of bombay jaishree in youtube - the same song, you can check that also.

  • Many scholars believe that this not a composition of dIkshitar.. enough said

  • God

  • Nice song. Please sink up the audio and video. I might as well go to musicindiaonline to listen to audio. Such a nice song is messed up with out of sink audio/video. Sorry about this comment......

  • M.S.S. has a voice like none other. Thank you so much for this video. Devaki (Karen Yochim)

  • Utubemadoli: I'm sorry I do not have a sample, I've been to many pow wows, but haven't quite heard a good representation on youtube or on the net.

Thanks for the explanation and I enjoyed the link.

    Jaiostu

  • Utubemadoli: Well "yes" Raga Dwijawanthi is confusing me, as I've never heard of it. Please enlighten me, smile.

Lakota and Tsalagi (Plains Indians and Cherokee) are "American" Indians - the Lakota specifically sing during their devotional "bajans" that has a sound very similar to the way MS Subbulakshmi sings -- it is devotional.

I thought maybe that "MS" was using a "style" of singing, as Indian devotional singing in any regard would be "stylized" to a western ear as our hymns differ.

  • !!!DIVINELY!!!

    Graceful!

    Thank you!

  • She is a legend. I grew up in an environment where my mother would listen to her on radio for an hour in the morning. I wondered about her when I was a kid and now I know that she is it. She is the best. As somebody mentioned, she does this with complete dedication and not for claps or money.

    thanks for this upload.

    Krishna

  • Great composition by Dikshithar ,sung by a great singer in a great fashion! My all time favourite song. Please do listen the same song sung by Maharajapuram Santhanam sung in an equally nice way.Especially I like his finishing.

  • Her singing is like Ancient Indian and Lokota or Tsalagi of American Indian variety -- there is a warble to her singing -- is it me or is her style entirely original?

  • there is no style in her, she sings with dedication and devotion., She does it as a service and not for fancy or for getting claps from public as other singers do

  • Suthra, yes I agree, I was only commenting on how unique she is, "style" is inappropriate as is labeling her -- you are right it is an offering and should be received that way. How is she viewed in India are there any others reveared as her now adays? Is she considered a "Guru?"

  • No there is noone like here., On male singers, one can consider Jesudas as a singer who takes this profession as a service to god and sing with dedication.

  • i think you will understand if you want to compare to those west side operas which you consider so classical!!!

  • Surapaneni: The Lokota are sacred people and they sing in this "warbled" fashion. I'm Black-Taino-Irish on one side and Hopi Indian on the other -- comparing her to the Lakota people is not an insult. Not too me.

I developed (on my own) an internal technique for deepening my chanting experiences -- would anyone like to share their method?

    Octobox

  • Octobox: You should have done some research for yourself over the internet rather than asking some stupid question like "what is she considered in India" or "Is this her own style".

Well one thing I will say I about her - She is the only "Bharat Ratna" in the world for music till date.

Bharat Ratna is the highest award an individual can get. I guess, you will begin to think of her in a different dimension now.

One cannot easily use words like "warble" or "grumble" with carnatic music.

  • Surapaneni: Thank you for "deigning" to respond to an interloper like me -- God! One does not have to strain to hear the disdain in your "tone." In my culture, when someone is curious, we treat the guest as God and not hold them to our cultural norms, rather use understanding and to assume the best.

MS Subbulakshmi, if she is a Bharat Ratna, it is not owing to you, but to the bliss she experiences from within. Bliss - a state that is long long preceded by tact and respect for God-Stranger!

  • suraoaneni, i think you are mistaken. as far as i am informed, bharat ratna was awarded to pandit ravi shankar in 1999 and to ustad bismillah khan and lata mangeshkar in 2001. could this be?

  • m s has a bharat ratna

  • Ms has a bharat ratna and the style she sings in is Indian carnatic classical. Its from the southern part of India and mostly contains the compositions of Thyagaraja, Annamayya and Dhikshitar(there are a few other composers as well). The style started around the 1600 when Annamayya frist composed his songs. The warbling is probably due to her age because shes is 70+ in this video and even angels like her cant be youthful for ever.If you want to her her real style you should listen to older songs

  • this is super, and we cant comment or praise her music because we r very small and still learning, and she is gifted by god her voice is a gift by mata saraswathi ,i seek her blessings to me.

  • superb

  • her lip movements dont match but my mum says she rocks so i guess she does!!

  • Its the inlay b/w the video and audio when uploaded to youtube..... she doesnt rock she enthralls and makes one spell bound to her music such is her divine music

  • It is because Subbulaxshmi mata that me Sri Vaishnava and brought me to Sri Venkateshwara! I use to listen to Her Venkatesha Subrabatam very morning when I was with I.S.K.O.N ashram in L.A. when I was new bhakta. I learned alot about how to intone Sanskrit mantras from Her.

I am indebted to Her for so much of my Spiritual life right now. It is because of Her I now go to Sri Sampradaya temple in Malibu. Namaskar and Love. adiyen, Govinda Ramanuja dasa/ Santa Monica, Ca. usa.
