The White Cap is (almost) the perfect pet parrot. Not noisy like cockatoos and conures. Playful like most Amazons. Subtle plumage like the Congo African Grey. Easy to handle because they are small (except for the Maximillian's Pionus) birds. Not great talkers and some can be aggressive/territorial. But they are affectionate and loyal. Coolest thing about them: They breathe HEAVILY when frightened or excited. I named my White Cap 'Lamaze'...
Nice white cap! Our white cap is 23 yrs old, says a few works and sqeeks like a guinea pig! We got her at 3 months old, hand fed, domestically bred. At the time the experts thought life span was 20 yrs....now it's up to 40 yrs!!! Shhh...don't tell my husband, but would love to add a Dusky to our family, down the road.
Silas came before the St. Poodles and isn't afraid of dogs...actually I think she likes to torment them a bit.....makes a certain noise they all respond to. Very funny.
@lostlaketower just to let you know, we have a white capped pionus 62 years old, they can live very long time, up to 90 years old, just give them exercise and good nutritional food,,good luck and blessings :)
My white cap started speaking just about the day I brought him home... well maybe a couple of months later. He says all kind of crazy things. I have a couple of vids up, but nothing liek he can speak now.
Spencer enjoyed watching and listening to Mojito. Both of us did :-)
Mine is just over a year now and she says stuff likke "hello simon" our african grey timney and then she's still working on, "nice peanuts" but she's still just mumbling that!
My pionus started talking when it was about 2 or 3 years old, its just about repeating a lot to them and remind them what they know. Now my pionus is 13 years old, i wonder how much they can live ? does anyone know that and how to differntiate their sex?
@infinitusCR Pionus are not dimorphic. VERY few parrots are. Most reliable method is DNA. Surgical sexing is outdated. Avian vets I've talked to won't use that method anymore.
He's talking up a storm! But, what's he saying? Can you translate for me?

How old is that cute bird. At what age did it start talking for you. My pionus said its first words after the thirteenth year I had him.
