I saw maynard in the early 70's without playing into a mic, he was in tune, the power would knock your head off, Sure he declined later with age but if you would have heard him in the day you would agree he was nearly a freak of nature and his tone was deep ,beautiful and very VERY unique.Hard to explain. I saw Doc S. at the same time. Extreme clarity and percision, and the range too. Like comparing a crystal bell to a hammer . Maynard was the hammer and the power would knock your head off.

Being a trumpet player myself, I look up to and listen to some of the greats (Gillespie, Sandoval, Miles), but Maynard is solely unique to me in what he played. Sure, anyone can squeal that high. Of course, I mean range is something most people work on anyway. But, how many players could scream with the tone, precision and dead on intonation that Maynard did? I'm sure someone can name a couple, but how many could do it into their 70s? I say, Ferguson is one of the greatest to ever live. RIP

Just goes to show that chops never die. I'm convinced that if he'd taken care of himself, Maynard would have sounded incredibly clean and crisp till at least age 80.

A players chops never really leave them (save for blunt trauma injuries). It's the wear and tear of age and disease on the rest of the body (heart, lungs, kidneys) that saps players.

Let that be a lesson to you trumpeters. Stay fit and healthy! Long live Maynard.

Well remember he is like 70 in this video. How many 70 year olds can play anywhere near that, even if they used to be professionals? And I thought his vibrato was fine. Eh, I think Jesse's version is better. And so is Scooters. I did really enjoy that EXTREMELY flat double C he played, almost all the way down to a Bb. Well I have been playing the Trumpet for a long time. That wasn't terrible... but it wasn't good. I know he meant well, and no disrespect, but his tone in that was god awful, his pitch was horrid, and his overall musicality was missing, but he did good at blaring a beautiful song... that is for sure.
