@Eskew you are dead on right there, I am trying to work on the way that Sandoval played it, I can already play it down an octave but now I just need to reach the upper octave
I love Maynard forever. Not only for his unique playing style, but for his enjoying the music and his human feeling. If God really exist, Maynard is near him. RIP
@MonkeymanBalloons Are you for real! Don't hate. Right now your best couldn't come close to his worst. I play every monday night at the"Hat Factory" in Richmond,Va. come on out lets see what you got. 9:00pm
@kcoddur Gee, I really wish I could, except I don't feel like traveling half way across the country to some show you do. And no where in that comment did I say that I was better than him. All I'm saying is that he shouldn't be doing proffessional shows if he can't play proffessionally. Especially in a song important such as this one.
@MonkeymanBalloons Look nobody's trying to bust your balls,ok! If you've got something to say about another musician's talent or lack of then you need to put up or shut up! No if and's or but's! Maynard earned the right to play any damn way he can! I've played for over twenty years and I'm good, but I'm no Maynard. Least not yet. So show a litte respect. By the way music is about love and respect and those that don't know that are not musicians. I wish you all the best in your music.
Then stop playing and stop complaining. He was a pioneer for the trumpet in a lot of ways and you can't say the same about yourself so keep it to yourself.
I saw maynard in the early 70's without playing into a mic, he was in tune, the power would knock your head off, Sure he declined later with age but if you would have heard him in the day you would agree he was nearly a freak of nature and his tone was deep ,beautiful and very VERY unique.Hard to explain. I saw Doc S. at the same time. Extreme clarity and percision, and the range too. Like comparing a crystal bell to a hammer . Maynard was the hammer and the power would knock your head off.
Being a trumpet player myself, I look up to and listen to some of the greats (Gillespie, Sandoval, Miles), but Maynard is solely unique to me in what he played. Sure, anyone can squeal that high. Of course, I mean range is something most people work on anyway. But, how many players could scream with the tone, precision and dead on intonation that Maynard did? I'm sure someone can name a couple, but how many could do it into their 70s? I say, Ferguson is one of the greatest to ever live. RIP
Hahah! Seventy Five + in this video if I'm not mistaken.
Just goes to show that chops never die. I'm convinced that if he'd taken care of himself, Maynard would have sounded incredibly clean and crisp till at least age 80.
A players chops never really leave them (save for blunt trauma injuries). It's the wear and tear of age and disease on the rest of the body (heart, lungs, kidneys) that saps players.
Let that be a lesson to you trumpeters. Stay fit and healthy! Long live Maynard.
this is good but all of u need to watch jesse mcguire play the anthem it beats this and im not saying maynard is mad this is still an amazing performance but jesses is better
ok, i'm tired of people making fun of Maynard Ferguson!!! And he was older at this performance and he can still play that good! He was probably the best jazzist who ever lived...God bless his soul...
Well remember he is like 70 in this video. How many 70 year olds can play anywhere near that, even if they used to be professionals? And I thought his vibrato was fine. I like to see all the armchair jazz trumpet players that Youtube has seemed to get all of a sudden. I mean if you all would just play the music yourselves, who needs Maynard?! He's nothing compared to you all!
just because Maynard is Maynard doesn't mean he plays everything perfect and people need to open their eyes to that. the national anthem is a tribute to America, not a wobbly vibrato, screamer song. yes that was Maynard's style but there are times when gears need to be shifted for a moment...like this song
and these guys wouldnt be here with out Louis Armstrong who by the way was one of the 1st trumpet players to go higher than a high "c" on a recording. then all hell broke loose.
Eh, I think Jesse's version is better. And so is Scooters. I did really enjoy that EXTREMELY flat double C he played, almost all the way down to a Bb. I also love how people lose their mind and make death threats and such whenever somebody talks bad about Maynard. Reading the comments on here is just as much fun as watching the videos. You KIDS need to chill out. Any grown person with any knowledge at all wouldn't say stupid shit like that.
jessie's really good but maynard's better and also how good you are is not based off of how high you can play, but if it was (which it sounds like you people are) maynard is better.
hey man chill out! its clear you're ignorant on this matter (especially with that comment regarding maynard's range, i mean, come on man that is just fucking ignorant). so how about you just get grip of reality. btw, for the record i think jesse is a legend and I love his version of this song. get is up ye baw bag!
he's not the best ever. no trumpet player has been "the best" and i doubt we'll ever be able to crown "the best." dont get me wrong, he is a legend and will never be forgotten. he was AMAZING in his youth! watch some vids of Jesse doing the SS Banner and hear the difference. everyone should open up their minds to the fact that Maynard isn't king.
you do realize that Maynard revolutionized the way people approach the trumpet? Not only that, but he knows what it means to be a musician. And not a scientist who like to call themselves musicians because they've perfected a technique.
Well I have been playing the Trumpet for a long time. That wasn't terrible... but it wasn't good. I know he meant well, and no disrespect, but his tone in that was god awful, his pitch was horrid, and his overall musicality was missing, but he did good at blaring a beautiful song... that is for sure.

The American Anthem is not beautiful. It is boring, simple and uninspiring. Maynard was a great trumpeter and if Mhunter was any good, would know that!

i agree the star spangled banner is a bad song musically speaking, we stole the tune from an english tune FSK just added in lyrics. Maynard had his work cut out for him playing this thing but still his pitch is decidedly lacking
To hell with you all. He was a Canadian and he showed the most respect possible and delivered an amazing tribute to the US. God bless America and God bless Maynard Ferguson. You people have no idea who he is do you?
atpal is right, maybe you guys haven't heard maynard perform but this last five years he's done tons of gigs with shitty high schools, (like this one). you guys need to chill out! lol fruit basket, lol your retarded. tactless??? how does that have any musical relevance??? the band sucks. RIP maynard
dude, chill... that's a little over the top. I'm sure he didn't mean to disrespect maynard, but the band didn't sound that great in the recording. Even great bands can have mediocre nights.
I agree with atpal, they don't sound very good. I've got a lot of respect for Maynard, and am definately one of his big fans, but in his older age the quality of his playing went down, and so did the quality of the members of his band. RIP Maynard. Way to keep an open mind atpal. everyone else... grow up, especially you fruitsbasketfever
The quality of the members in his band...REALLY? You can't go by that off-the-cuff rendition. Did you head "The One And Only"...the recording Maynard made several weeks before he died? If you haven't heard it...you must get it...Maynard sounds absolutely amazing on it.
i hope u get urself shot one day, atpal, cause that's a lot of disrespect to a band lead by a man who spent his life serving the world through his extraordinary music career. but, it's okay, ur probably just a tactless, tasteless idiot.
