Without a single doubt the greatest African American wrestler in history. Much like Billy Graham, he was one of first wrestlers who built their careers more on character and gimmick then on their in-ring skills.
Awesome. Amazing. Junkyard Dog was one of the wrestlers I used to watch when I first started watching wrestling back in 1983, watching him come out to Another One Bites The Dust. So watching this video really means a lot, a whole lot. RIP JYD and Ernie Ladd.
Fuck DREW CAREY And PETE ROSE Getting Inducted into the HOF. Those two are a JOKE To those spots when they could've given those to Deserving Legends THAT are Professional Wrestlers!!
@dciguy01 Who the F are you to say that? JYD was a huge star in the 80's, more so then a lot of people who are now inducted in the hall of fame, he was also respected by his peers and the wwe establishment so once again....who are you to judge....a nobody, that's who. Step into the ring, become a somebody, pay your dued like the old stars did working 200+ nights a year, then maybe, just maybe you can speak.
@vancitypoet, well now, while we're at it, let's just throw Doink the Clown into the HOF. He always got a huge crowd pop everywhere he went and people loved him. Might as well put Koko B Ware in there too... oh wait...
@dciguy01 Young one...you do realize that before JYD even came into WWE he was a champ at Stu Harts Stampede Promo, the #1 face in the mid south territory where he feuded with likes of dibiase and bundy, then came into wwe where he feuded with the likes of Harley Race no less, and teamed with the likes of Hulk Hogan.....hell, he even feuded with Flair for the NWA strap....unless doink the clown has similar credentials....you need to stfu quick. You probably started watching wrestling 5 years ago
@vancitypoet, been watching wrestling since '93, so try again. I've got no problem if JYD were to be admitted into a general wrestling HOF for his accomplishments, but in terms of the WWE - name the last title he held there. I realize that titles in the current WWE are pretty much laughable, but back in the golden era and beyond they actually meant something.
@dciguy01 You do realize that the WWE hall of fame also recognizes accomplishments from other organizations right? Hence why guys like Harley Race, Jerry Lawler, Bob Orton jr. and Dusty Rhodes are in the Hall......none of those guys held any titles in the WWE.....maybe they shouldn't be in the Hall either eh? For that matter, neither should Jimmy Snuka, take him out too. Dependable, loyal, dedicated wrestlers who paid their dues make the fame, belts are not a prerequisite.
@dciguy01 1993? You missed the freakin' 80s when JYD was huge and right up there with Hogan and Andre. Belts? It was never about belts, it's charisma and entertainment - hence sports entertainment and JYD was top dog.
@dciguy01 Who the F are you to say that? JYD was a huge star in the 80's, more so then a lot of people who are now inducted in the hall of fame, he was also respected by his peers and the wwe establishment so once again....who are you to judge....a nobody, that's who. I've always loved this particular HOF induction. Ernie Ladd has to be one of the most genuine, articulate speakers I've ever heard in or out of pro wrestling. The next time any of those cartoons in the mainstream media tries to write off wrestlers as being a gang of idiots, someone should direct them to this video. Just wonderful stuff. RIP Big Cat & JYD.
smoked weed with JYD in little rock about 1983. we were on our way to the matches gettin high at a stoplight when butch reed buck robley and JYD pulled aside. we pulled into a parking lot got stoned and talked about that we were on our way to see them. they were super cool. RIP JYD. and big cat.
One of the eloquent hall of fame induction speeches of any sport, by Ernie Ladd. It's too bad JY bailed on Mid South. He may have been the piece of the puzzle that kept LMD wrestling afloat. And McMahon knew that. Oh well what's done is done
The Junkyard Dog's best days were in the Mid-South. His time in the WWF was crap. In the Mid-South, JYD sold out arenas all over the south in a time when Black wrestlers would get booed for challenging racism. He was the hero to kids who's parents probably wouldn't allow a Black man in their houses. By the time he got to the WWF, he was a shell of his former self. But it's hard to fathom how huge he was in Mid-South.
I have always believed that if Hollywood Hogan ever got injured during his big run from 1984-1987 (which was his big run before Randy Savage really was moved up to main events in WWE.) JYD would have taken his spot. Nobody really talks about JYD matches, but his charisma is unforgettable.
@sayanroy36 You don't know that and knowing what fans want, booking, and or making cash and selling tickets in sports entertainment is far from simple. If it was every person with a virtual or physical keyboard would be a promoter.
@Sweetguy9009 oh yes, on the contrary i know that. cause there's been plenty of precedents which anybody with eyes can see.
i never said selling tickets in sports entertainment was simple.
but not pushing even a popular black superstar in professional wrestling specially in the 80s, doesn't take a genius to figure that out....or are you one of those '"the president's black,so the world is free of racism" kinda guys?
@sayanroy36 First of all, like many other smarks, you point out the obvious. Good for you. And yes there's racism, sexism, all over the place which is why I don't mention it because it's like pointing out strawberries have a mixture of green and red. And you pointed out it was the 1980's Hogan and Flair weren't moronic enough to get hurt because they just been given the ball and they were going to run with it. I don't blame them and hey Dog didn't become a star.
@sayanroy36 Or the biggest guy in WWE. They were so many other talented guys in the NBA when Magic Johnson was playing. Does it make it his fault or the NBA's that those players never got pushed or became something. Is it Mr. McMahon's fault that Captain America (Hogan) came off a huge run in AWA and people looked to him as the poster boy he'd been a moron like Gagne if he didn't make him the WWE Champion and have him hold it four years.
I think he was neglected in the WWE/F.
