The problem is that you essentially can't negotiate with hamas in any meaningful way. The common view is that If you give concessions, they will see you as "weak" and exploit that fact.

The fact is that there was no real arab state there and that the landowners were the ottoman empire (I think.) The entire muslim world cannot tolerate an entity of a foreign religion in their midst, so they will appear to support the 'plight' of the 'palestinians' (which is an artificial name for the people) - but they don't even have the goodwill to take them in as refugees!
Israel is our only allie in that region, as for the landowing issue I'm not au fait with the particulars but I believe there was cases of the Arab landowners double selling plots of land (i.e. selling the same plot of land to Jews and other Arabs). Either way a sensible solution has to be reached and it won't be palatable to the extremists on either side.

I don't think it's particularly strange for media outlet owners to be hands on, Murdoch is, Maxwell was, Conrad Black was. If Murdoch can keep the Saudis sweet he will have found a practically infinite supply of capital ready to be injected to support his operations should they begin ailing, as happened a couple of years ago, and he'll be able to, for the most part, continue running things his way.

Personally I feel that it would be impractical for anyone not to recognise Israel's right to exist, if for no other reason than that the debate should centre on how the two groups will share land and not on whether or not they will both be there.

My solution would be allowing Israel to continue in its present form but with greater freedom of movement for the Arab residents of the Gaza strip on condition that groups such as the PLO disband or at least disarm. Without subsidies from either sides' backers we would see who would sink and who would swim when independent. I suspect Israel is in a better position than Gaza.
The cycle will only end when enough people want it to, Northern Ireland is proof of that.

Hamas are a terrorist organisation by anyone's standards, that doesn't justify any excesses toward civilians (genuine ones, not terrorists pretending to be civilians) on the part of the IDF but I don't think there is much question as to whether or not Hamas' methods make them into terrorists.
Terrorists need to be dealt with using brute force, as you say they will interpret concessions and attempts to open up a dialogue as weakness on their opponents' part.

That advert was so stupid that as an american tv viewer I would feel deeply insulted to the point that I would have probably never dared to watch television again.
