@pitbullizer90 Actually, it is the original national anthem of Germany. There are three stanzas. We only sing the third, just like the Americans mostly only sing their first stanza.

The first was mostly used by Nazi-Germany, so we started singing the third instead.

But it is not rassistic at all.

@chromekumpel That's a common mistake: While it is true, that only the 3rd verse if the official national anthem (and even that only since 1991), the first two verses are and were never prohibited by law, with the exception of a short period right after the war. You could sing them out in the open if you wanted to, although I would not recommend that. ;)

@Karash770 not really... since the 3rd of october 1990, the 3rd verse of the anthem is the regular national anthem of germany, because of the possibility of misunderstandings it is forbidden to sing the first verse (public). of course also not as an anthem.

this was never prohibited by law, but was decided within a correspondence between the german councellor Kohl and a man named Weizsäcker.this correspondence is uncontradicted and valued as a law.

Die erste Strophe ist weder verboten, noch ist sie nicht länger Teil der Hymne. Es ist lediglich bei offiziellen (Staats) Anlässen vorgeschrieben das nur die 3. als Hymne verwendet wird.

This is NOT my anthem. Only the last part is. Since 1991 the first part what's saying "Deutschland, Deutschland über alles" was officially no part of the anthem anymore, because the Nazis misused it in the second World War for showing Germany off as the greatest land (how very wrong they were, haha) so now only the last part is used.

And btw.. @gamzonic: I think the USA has one of the most beautiful anthems of the world! (Just as South Africa) :-)

Hoffman von Fallersleben wrote the poem when Germany was a loose confederation of moderately independent states. The national anthem of Germany is only the 3rd verse of the "Lied der Deutschen" ("Deutschlandlied"). The 1st verse was ruined by the nazi criminals and the 2nd verse is more a song for a pub than part of a national anthem. But the 3rd verse of our national anthem is calling for justice and peace and freeddom for Germany and its people. The melody is great. It makes me proud to sing our national anthem.

This was formerly the Imperial German anthem...from the Kaiser Wilhelm era. It's name is "Deutschland Uber Alles." The Nazi anthem is entirely different. It is called the "Horst Wessel Lied" or "Die Fahne Hoch."
