Then I bet you don't believe there are thousands of people like Starbucks. I'm not a Starbucks's fan but think about it. At the store almost all of the coffee they make is a blend, vanilla syrup, chocolate, caramel... and those are sweet. So they have to over roast the coffee to add that bitter to the sweetness. Another reason is the super automatic machine. This type of machine will give you a very watery shot so it comes to the dark roast, same idea.
in the midwest there are a lot cariboo coffee chains, east coast dunkin donuts, not sure about west. Also there are some two or three state wide chains every where. In bigger cities there are Illy shops, if your lucky.
Other than Starbucks there Dunkin' Doughnuts Coffee and Caribou Coffee. But there are so many other places you can get good coffee other than that, a lot of local cafes are almost if not as delicious:]
Starbucks pay more than the majority rate of coffee per bag on the market but only buy from the to 2% of producers and traders. They do put things better than money back into the communities of the producers and farmers by giving them grants, loans, advice and help centres as well as contributing to build hospitals, school, etc...
Starting 2009, Starbucks will be able to announce that they buy 60% of the world's coffee produced. This will give them a huge amount of power and responsibilty.

I'm a UK Starbucks barista and I'm curious. What other coffee houses are there in the USA that people visit regularly?
Over here Sbucks kinda wins but we also have Costa and Cafe Nero.
Just a question so please don't flame me.

The actual coffee is complete and utter crap. It's bad tasting coffee. Be happy that they hide it in a sea of sploshy milk.

They're talking about the actual whole beans in this video, not the Espresso Roast used in Lattes and Capps.
