I am half German. I live in Australia. My dad is German. He came to Australia in the late 1950's and married my mother, who is half Scottish and half Maltese. So that makes we, god knows what!
Don't know what (whom) you are singing about (I only have limited (extremely limited) German language knowledge.) But you have such a beautiful singing voice and lovely guitar strumming as well.
You are MUCH too hard on yourself.
I love the German hairstyle as well. :-)
Looking forward to another family jam whenever it's feasible. :-)
You can google the lyrics and translation if you would like to know more about the song. It's a long song! It was popular amongst the soldiers in alot of countries. They adopted it as their own. There are a few versions of this song consequently.
is the lilli marelne any reference to marlene dietrich? i really like the song and your german, while i'm no expert, sounds quite good. i think the last time i listened to ein lieder im deutchse was schubert (im grune ... check it out sometime ), or sie lieb dicht, by the fab four. great job helen. hope all is well with the family and that you guys are planning more group sing alongs !
No, lili Marlene has nothing to do with Deitrich personally but she did sing a famous version of this song. This was a popular war time song. Even though it is German, all soldiers seemed to like it. There are a few different versions of this song. I wanted to sing the German one though because I am half German and wanted to have a go at it I spose. I do sound Australian though. It's hard to keep those Aussie twangs out of your speech when singing.
i think you are a lovely lady, pixie, ( i mean helen ), and you make a great effort on this song. does this son ( i mean lieder ) have anything to do with marlene dietrich ? just wondering. the last german song i listened to was "im grune " by schubert . know it? best wishes and good thoughts to you and the family.
You may be doing it for "corn" value, but you have managed to make it closer to bratwurst! Your German is pretty darn convincing and it's really nicely sung! Sehr Gut!
I really enjoy your version!

it's about a soldier's girlfriend.
He's thinking about out her waiting for him
underneath the lamplight.
