@FilipinoZeroFighter ... I do have a video up of SBD GE's and EMD's sounds. Posted on Nov 29, 2011. You might want to check it out. Let me know what you think. Thanks for watching...
they both sound good...but I do love the sound of EMD...i will never forget the days when the local RR had gp7s n 9s...n i got to ride with them a BUNCH.....O what memories!!!
the sound of the alco's is the very same reason i like allot of older GEs. i dont know why, i just love that chugging sound *with 2 of them* beating in rhythm at notch 5. though at notch 8 they kinda sound like steam engines, lol
OOOhhhh....YES YES....I love that sound...Great video...I like it wery wery much. I think i`m the biggest ALCO fan here in Denmark...I would like to wish we ALCO,s here in Denmark. I´m som glad to see your fantastic ALCO videoes. I rate it with 5 stars. Thanks wery much.
I like the sound of any EMD over anything with a four-cycle engine. I'm definitely a hardcore fan of the two-stroke, and the turbo chargers on EMD give a nice whine. But I do miss the ALCO's in service. Thanks for sharing.
the turbo whining on the SD40 at start up is great, but the sound of that 251 on the ALCo-MLW its just fantastic, music to my ears, and the smoke is a big plus......awesome video man
Personally for me I'm an EMD SD40-2 man.The Alcos always sounded like they were dropping a cylinder...LOL One day I was over just east of Keele and an Alco was headed for MacMillan I swear it was a Steamer coming and and so surprised too see it was an Alco as i had never heard one before. That was back in the mid 80's.
@canadiantimberwolf1 I got a video a Cartier M636 up in Quebec. I know what you mean about a steamer. A s/b loaded log train passed with a single unit. To hear it coming down the valley, you would swear it was a steam locomotive. Just Fantastic. Thanks for watching. Take care...
I too am an ALCOholic. For sheer volume of sound you can't beat the Alco/MLW 4 stroke. But for Turbo sound the EMD wins. One of the things besides sound I like with Alco/MLW is the "turbo lag" which creates a lot of smoke as the throttle is opened up. Where as the EMD with its 2 stroke & turbosupercharger is quicker on the "boost" due to direct drive off the cam shaft therefore elliminating "turbo lag" with little or no smoke.
@strobx1 I agree with you. What I don't understand is how a pair like this can work too well together. It always seems like the EMD is doing all the work, while the Alco sounds "lazy". Must put a lot of run-in and run-out on the couplers, with the Alco playing "catch-up". I have heard on other videos that Alcos could pull the Queen Mary out of the water, as far as starting-pulling power. Don't know how the EMD's compare in that regard, but I love both makes anyway.
@Deathcult82 They do sound fantastic Bill, and here in the states, you have to drive long distances to find these old girls in service. Thanks for watching. Jack
@1jackdk No problem!! I'm a big ALCo fan and I want to go see some in action but don't have the time to go to New York where some are lol. I do want to purchase a model of one and add a sound decoder eventually! Truly an amazing locomotive (and video)
@csxketh1 The new Soundtraxx Tsunami is great. Saw a few clips of them on youtube. I would like to get a few for my Penn Cental C628's and c630. They would sound good pulling my G39 ore care. Glad you enjoyed the video...
Very nice, I like both but if I had to choose it would have to be EMD. Sorry.

Both have great sounds. But with ALCO you get a sound and sight show. I'm an EMD guy but when there's ALCO's around, they take the cake.

ALCO!!!!!
(but I have a confession...even though I'm an "ALCOhaulic", I really do love the moaning whine of an EMD. Don't tell anyone.)
