Who wants a funny story? I have a friend named Johnny who was one year old when this song was released. He grew up to marry a Puerto Rican women, her name isn't Jane though. So Bruce wrote this song for a hopeful future fan.
i was at the 12/28/80 and 12/31/80 shows at the Nassau Coliseum and the 9/25-/99 show in Philly, where he opened with this great song, blew the real fans out of the building, all the Born In The U.S.A. fans were dumbfounded.. it was funny..
It is a Japanese import, but they have the date wrong. This is from December 29, 1980. He played three shows at the Nassau Coliseum, ending with the New Year's show that people thought was over after four,.plus hours, at 12:45.
But they came back and played another set that lasted until a quarter to three.
Then, after a 30 minute break, Bruce came back and played an all acoustic set, after which a buffet breakfast was served to the 8,000 or so who were still there.
the album one is spectacular, but this one is even better! wow. bruce's c. 1980 voice, deep but gruff and raspy, adds much more to it than the orig. i gotta get this disc
The best version of this song-I recorded it on cassette off a b-side special in L.A. years ago-and lost it-this is the 'incident' version that just knocked me on my ass-great audio-Bruce sure can rip a tele with the best of em'-much thanks-
A damn shame that this incredible song would not be performed live again until 1999. (Like most pre-BTR songs). I'm not sure what Bruce was thinking by not playing early masterpieces like this during the Born in the U.S.A. tour or the Tunnel tour. Anyway, I'm glad that in the post-ESB reunion period, that he has dusted off such earlier gems. I saw 'Greetings' played all the way through in Buffalo, including the ultra-rare "The Angel." An amazing experience.
Amazingly, this is the last time he would play the song for 19 years.
Then on September 25, 1999, he opened the show in Philly with it - I call it Anthem Incident, because it could be played in a stadium. The audience doesn't recognize it at first. Besides the 19 years, the album is 26 years old. As they do, they get louder and louder and start singing along. 20,000 are singing the chorus at the end, which is followed by 2 minutes of a LOUD BAND and louder lead guitar. Over ten minutes.
Yes he got to me with the guitar ending, that's part of his genius. I thought I heard every one and then I happen upon a new one and it's pure bliss...
I was at this show in December, 1980 and still remember parts of it. Especially when he did "Incident." It was my favorite song, and that night he went straight from it into "Rosalita"...just like on the album. The place went crazy! It was the last time he ever played those 2 songs back to back, and the last time he would play "incident" for almost 20 years. I have no idea why. It's one of his very best songs. I've seen Bruce many times since but this was, by far, my favorite show. Thanks!
This isn't on Live 1975-85, although *why*, I have no idea. This was played only at the third Nassau show, on December 29th, 1980. The Japanese import is wrong.
This was the last time he would play Incident, which is on his album, Te Wild, the Innocent, & the E-Street Shuffle, released in Nov, 1973, for 19!!! years.
He opened with it on 9/25/99, in Philadelphia, with an anthemic, full band version.
Who else has a song this great that it can be put it on the shelf for 19 years? Amazing.
I've been out of work for over 1 month, Bruce's music has kept my spirit up. This has to one of his best. I have tears coming out the more I listen to this song. I went dig out some of my old Bruce collections and I found this 12" single! Just need to figure out how to convert this to CD format.
the versions of incident and for you from this japanese import are the best versions iv'e heard of both these songsi'm looking forward to rosie and fire and anything else available from this collection, thanx great stuff.
This is the version where they left the piano in the truck over night. It was cold so the next night they tuned the piano and it thawed and went slightly out of tune. I forgot how good of a version this was.
This is my favorite Bruce tune. My first show was NYE at this venue three days later. That would mark the beginning of a 27 year tradition of me constantly missing this song - still have yet to catch it!
sorry, this is a great version; I'm just pissed that Bruce hasn't released tons of INCREDIBLE gems from the vault, over all these years. (Tracks was nothing, in relation to the sheer volume of what's out there, and what hasn't circulated)
@primitivelink This version is incredible. It makes me feel happy to be alive in a world that contains such beauty, and I'm a masculine male.
This was the last time he played the song for 19 years. He opened with it in Philadephia on 9/25/99.
That performance was a full-band anthem. People didn't recognize the song initially. After all, it was on an album that was released over 26 years earlier. By the end 20,000 were singing along. Then 2 1/2 minutes of near heavy metal outtro.
@primitivelink You're comparing cheese & Tuesday, solo acoustic performances to full band anthem, rock & roll, to this great version, which is about in the middle.
I think this version, the last time he played it for 19 years is stunningly great as is the Philly, 9/25/99 Reunion presentation, the next time it would be played.
The LA 10/23/99 Reunion show's treatment is also fantastic.
Pick one for yourself if you like. There's no consensus.
Love this sound, it is easy to play an eguitar quick but really hard to play it slow as bruce does, its class, man it needs practice, and btw its a class song!!!
This is ACTUALLY from the Dec 29, 1980 show (incorrectly dated on the releases). My first Bruce concert at age 12, 31 years ago today!
Good post, but some pictures circa 1980 would have been nice to include.

The Japanese import can be purchased on Amazon for $23.68, plus $3.00 shipping.
In addition to incident, it includes For You, Rosalita, and Fire, all had been intended for inclusion on Live 1975-85, but none made it.
It's called: Live Collection
To me, that's a bargain. Just having a pristine copy of this performance of Incident is worth the money.

Beautiful version, which was available on some singles outside of Japan also, such as the 7" of Fire in the U.S. But on CD, yeah...
General consensus is that the best version of this is either the 2/5/75 Main Point with Suki, or 3/25/77.
I've been listening to the latter for over a week straight, I'm convinced that's the best version Bruce did of this in his whole life.
