I grew up in GY and Gorleston, leaving in 1989. Had a great time there but have visited a few times and it's not the same. Such a shame as there is so much history there. Why the demise - who knows. Perhaps those who have seen the complete swing may have an idea why.
If it is so bad why don't you get off your backside and do something about it..or move? If you've ever bothered to travel outside of the town you'd know it is the same all over the country. Unfortunately too many of us just moan and whine about it, and expect someone else to sort it all out.

i live in Essex but was born in London and have been vacationing in Great Yarmouth for over 30 years and i have NEVER come across any of the sites that are shown If you don't like where you reside then move instead of whining. There are bad areas wherever you live but hey you don't have to visit them.
The Council lost £3 million pounds when the Icelandic bank went bust, they chucked another £70 million at the Outer Harbour which hasnt brought much work really for the average Jo..
and they scared away channel 4's POP BEACH as they didnt wanna pay the Police and cleanup bill afterwards..
and next years budget in great yarmouth will be chucked at the 3rd Bridge they wanna build to accomadate the trucks bringing chinese made goods into the country easier and quicker, adding to UK problems.
Great Yarmouth Holds the 4th most economicly deprived town in the whole UK title under it's belt, true we might not be as bad as london.. but 20 million people live in london, there's only 90,000 people within Yarmouth Borough.. and with the steady downwards spiral of north sea exploration and the fishing fleet is almost dead and bankrupt, it's starting to show even more now especially in a reccession as well...
It has seen better days...but there are some still decent rides there...worth the day out as if you get a wristband you can go in and out as much as you want all day.
If You want more thrill rides then i recommend Pleaseurewood Hills. :)
just got back from a weekend there, and really enjoyed it, i also went about 8-10 years ago, and i would say it has improved over time. they have smartened the front up with new lighting new seating, made it more pedestrian and family friendly, giv it a try, you never know.
the only thing i would say is, the old steak houses are very dated, real 80's and late 70's stuff

Been to many worse places - been to better places. It has been politically let down over the last 40 years. It is a tad neglected & cut adrift (is that A47 to Norwich ever going to be improved?). At times it doesn't seem to have a very positive mindset (it stagnates and could do with a lick of paint). BUT unless Yarmouth has been over run in the last 6 years since I was last there, this video is something that could be made of any town or city in the world. There are far worse places than this.

@Warleybear I have to concur. Hasn't the newly-built harbour enhanced Great Yarmouth somewhat? I can think of several 'resorts' in England which I would rate well below GY, so you're not doing too bad.
The A47 is like a bloody country lane. Improve this, and tourism shall escalate.
And don't ever dispose of 'House Of Wax'. It must surely now be a site of world-wide interest. Hope to return in 2010.

IMO, Yarmouth has the potential to be excellent. It is suffering, like many seaside towns are but I've lived in much worse areas (Coventry, Nuneaton, Reading, Derby, Loughborough, Stevenage). I was born there and appreciate the vast sands, the sea, the Broads and even the market place is more characterful than many places. It just needs some industry to bring in money now the fishing has gone and the oil/gas indeclining.

Great Yarmouth is a nice place. Every town has its trouble youth, homeless person, litter, possessed buildings, junk food, vandalism etc.. If you want to see the real Great Yarmouth, live there, be a part of its community, and history.
I have nothing against foreign people living or working in Great Yarmouth. I am not racist in any way. Construction sites, "slum" areas, rubbish tips and alchoholics can be found in the back streets of any town or city, if you look hard enough. Perhaps the video was made as a tongue in cheek comment, in which case I could point out far worse places in and around Great Yarmouth than those shown. No offence was meant to anyone.

My brother's mate lived in Yarmouth and detested the place. When he was about 12, he got the chance to have a week away in Kings Lynn with his grandparents. Saturday morning they all went on a mystery tour coach ride. Fuck me - it took then to Great Yarmouth. When he told us this years later, we pissed ourselves laughing. Anyway, sad end to the tale, he was sectioned and now lives in maximum security wardensville. His only joy is weekly bingo and feeling his plums. Poor old bastard.

@Warleybear I have to concur. Hasn't the newly-built harbour enhanced Great Yarmouth somewhat? I can think of several 'resorts' in England which I would rate well below GY, so you're not doing too bad.
The A47 is like a bloody country lane. Improve this, and tourism shall escalate.
And don't ever dispose of 'House Of Wax'. It must surely now be a site of world-wide interest. Hope to return in 2010.

IMO, Yarmouth has the potential to be excellent. It is suffering, like many seaside towns are but I've lived in much worse areas (Coventry, Nuneaton, Reading, Derby, Loughborough, Stevenage). I was born there and appreciate the vast sands, the sea, the Broads and even the market place is more characterful than many places. It just needs some industry to bring in money now the fishing has gone and the oil/gas indeclining.

The two pubs on the Britannia Pier (Britannia, and Long John's) are great places for early doors sessions.
The best place is Louis Tussauds Museum - the notoriously diabolical 'House Of Wax', it's an absolute scream.

If you hate Great Yarmouth so much why go to the trouble of making such a video? A video like this will make people think twice about coming there and therefore bring less tourism and money to regenerate the area. There are bad parts of yarmouth but no more so than elsewhere. So anyone watching this please dont let it stop you going. Well what a lovely place Gt Yarmouth is !This video shows what the town was loke a couple of years ago but it has not improved at all.You only have to walk through the market place to see how dirty the town is and the scruffy dont give a monkeys appearance of some of our so called towns folk.

i lived in yarmouth twice in 2008 and have loads ov good memories from there.I`ts no worse than any where else in the country and when i was there the council seemed to be trying to sort things out, so don`t knock what u have.I loved my time there and the people and will remember the place for the rest ov my life with deep affection.

I understand your point of view, I was merely trying to show that it is not only the ''Chavs'' in the community that do not like the area. I do respect the opinion of others and I beleive Yarmouth was once a fantastic area during the time of the Herring Fleet when there was industry and and culture. In fact one of my favorite folk singers was a yarmouth fisherman from Winterton called Samuel Larner but that doesnt change what it has become, you merely have to walk down Victoria Arcade and....

I have nothing against foreign people living or working in Great Yarmouth. I am not racist in any way. Construction sites, "slum" areas, rubbish tips and alchoholics can be found in the back streets of any town or city, if you look hard enough. Perhaps the video was made as a tongue in cheek comment, in which case I could point out far worse places in and around Great Yarmouth than those shown. No offence was meant to anyone.

They are here trying to make a better life for themselves and their families,doing jobs that some feel is below them to do.they are paying their taxes and adding to the economy, not sitting on their backsides, claiming benefits and thinking that the world owes them a living. the better educated amongst us realise this.I can recomend yarmouth college although you may encounter some people from other countries trying to better their english skills, I trust this will not annoy you too much

My brother's mate lived in Yarmouth and detested the place. When he was about 12, he got the chance to have a week away in Kings Lynn with his grandparents. Saturday morning they all went on a mystery tour coach ride. Fuck me - it took then to Great Yarmouth. When he told us this years later, we pissed ourselves laughing. Anyway, sad end to the tale, he was sectioned and now lives in maximum security wardensville. His only joy is weekly bingo and feeling his plums. Poor old bastard.
