Auto tune is used by a lot of artists.. Some untalented assholes uses it to correct the lack of talent, but in this case maybe he got a little off in some parts and was corrected with autotune, which is the correct use for this program.. Live tracks to be released on DVDs or Live CDs are ALWAYS modified.. period .
Cool. This is a good place to share something I noticed when I got the DVD: the bass synth sound for this song is different on the DVD than the bass synth sound heard on the VHS version. Not sure why they messed with it. If anyone else has both versions, go back and listen and you'll notice.
Hey brother man, :). Great job. I'm an old school base player, Getty Lee & Steve Harris from Iron maiden are my GODS. I wish I had this technology when I was trying to learn this stuff, it would have saved me hours, and hours of trying to pick up what he was doing. Keep it up dude, love it :)
WTF?!?!?!?!? AUTO TUNE IN THE PRESENTS OF RUSH?! WHO THE FUCK DID THIS?! IM GOING TO KILL THEM! THE IDIOTS WHO REMASTERED THIS DOESN'T KNOW THAT GEDDY IS PERFECT BY HIMSELF! BECAUSE THEY LISTEN TO MODERN DAY SHIT. NOT MUSIC, BUT SHIT
@ATY9Productions If you're gonna bash a few momentary uses of Auto Tune, be sure to bash the fact they use samplers to play stuff that no one else is playing. Or that the recordings are done with multitrack technology. Or that they are released in stereo. —All of which is not true to the original performance.
@tapkae yeah! they are perfectly fine the way they are. they always sound just like the album when they play live... this really pissed me off, because the auto tune made him sound terrible...
I am so impressed that at your age (no disrespect intended) that you recognize RUSH as worthy of your time. These days most kids are in to other stuff.
LOL! At 2:15 he says "There is magic at your BINGERS"! LOL! FORGOT THE WORDS! Pretty cool how u isolated this. Starting at 2:44, you can hear a pitch correction setting used in post production, It sounds a bit like in the rap videos you hear today. Also, you can hear an effect called, uh... Crap! I forget what its called... But it turns off his mic after he's done singing, in between parts of the verses.
Interesting. I've never heard anything like this before...
And as well I'm going to note, I'm glad that the auto-tune thing was caught. I had been planning on getting this CD but the re-mastered version...And even on the re-mastered CD it has been auto-tuned. But a "original master" is a "original master". So no auto-tune on that thank god.
Alright I've been seeing a lot of things about auto-tune. I know why they typically do that. DVD format audio quality is the worst there is and pitches at times I have seen fluxuate and actually lower so when you go listen to the actual DVD it won't be the same 9/10 times, plus there could've been a pitch corruption, i.e.-Don't Let Me Down~John Lennon's voice on that song had a analog pitch screw up and had to be digitally corrected. So thats basically why typically and my guess as to why.
@LightningCat315 I think you're quite mistaken about dvd audio - there is no way that the pitch changes at all on dvd between viewings - it is digital after all.
Analog is completely different. The pitch on an analog recording depends on the recording equipment and playback equipment (if your turntable is too fast then the pitch will be too high).
I basically don't understand what you're trying to say say with your comment. The reason they do autotune is to "fix" "badly sung" vocal tracks.
@thebigguyconnor And I'm going to be honest, if you want a real challenge go fix up "Ceiling Unlimited" from Vapor Trails. All I know is I had "Earthshine" pretty much there (even adding the dynamic spacial sound people like to hear, and practically click/pop free) but I was so tired while messing with it I screwed up and didn't even save my progress.
@LightningCat315 I'll definitely play around with Vapor Trails sometime. I have removed clipping out of some of my old demos using plugins in the past (you can never completely remove the distortion, but you can make it less harsh).
@thebigguyconnor True. I messed around with "Peaceable Kingdom" recently. I really have that one going smooth right now. And for "Ceiling Unlimited" like you said, the distortion cannot completely be removed but I have kicked the distortion out to its on area so I can take it out and add the final mix. And tip, use Audacity 1.3.12, go Google "slimslowslider" and if you find some I think, Japanese, page with plug-ins, get the Linear Phase EQ and Linear Phase Mastering EQ.
@thebigguyconnor And the thing about those two plug-ins is I use the Linear Phase EQ a lot. I use the +12 through -96 scale while re-mixing "Vapor Trails" content. That way I can take down the 15279-20000 Hz (the really sonic potent stuff that did a thing or two to "Vapor Trails") and I mainly reduce those along with 20-85 Hz from about -96 through about -72. It really lowers the volume a lot on how the waveform is shown and in general how it sounds.
@alienhuman HAHAHHAA!!! LOL! I am SO surprised that anyone would even notice that! I did that when I was in grade 4 as an art project and never bothered to take it down!
@tricia41D I was just thinking that, especially at 2:40. i don't know, they tend to stay away from that, perhaps it was just the microphone peaking and it made an autotune sound... i don't know
@JohnyLennon4 Do you want the live version from this same dvd/show? I can definitely do that if that's what you mean! If you mean the studio version, I can't do that because there's no multi-tracks / 5.1 mixes available for 2112.
@simont2112 yeah, perhaps - but I always thought that he sung that way because he had a cold or something on that night. thats a coment i read about it on some other youtube video.
@simont2112 It doesn't sound like autotune to me. Probably more like an audio 'clipping' in the master process. For one thing, in the most 'auto tuned" sounding sections, he's not singing off key.

Well for that Vapor Trails thing, I got up "One Little Victory [Remix]" and "Earthshine [Remix]" up from Retrospective III.

Ew, the autotune seriously cheapens the greatness that is Rush. I don't want to be reminded of modern day hip hop garbage when I listen to this band.
