I work for an elections office and this is in no way possible, from county to county and every election there is a new security encryption created so even if i took one of my cards and took it to another counties machine or a machine from last election, it would say the card is invalid.

the best way would be a recipt with a 16 digit number on the bottom. you could use the number to log online and see your vote yea or nea, and see how it adds to the totals, without anyone knowing your '5029365394835248'. Your personal vote is kept secret, and the entire citizenry can see the entire vote database and add it up themselves if they wish.

We use optical machines here which seem to work fine. I never saw the point of the touch-screen machines anyway. Still, any election can be rigged if someone is willing to do it. Heck, if it weren't for ballot box stuffing we might never have had Lyndon Johnson inflicted on us.

No. Johnson's first run for Congress. There is a picture of him and his party pals out in the boonies posing with a ballot box. It was a race for the House and like many House districts it didn't take that many votes to steal it.

The optical machines use a paper ballot which is then fed into the machine which counts the votes AND stores the paper ballot.

As a software developer, I will NEVER recommend electronic voting systems. That basically puts whatever is left of our democracy is the hands and control of a few - the software developers, and those who control the developers - not to mention security flaws, exploits and viruses.

I know what is possible... and too much is possible.

We must stick with ballots, which must be counted on site and reported to a public registry for everyone to see and tally...

Software is invisible to the naked eye. Therefore ALL voting machines are insecure. Manual voting is the only secure way. Then votes can be counted by humans and recorded on video.

The video recordings could be made available on the web. By including a pothook together with your vote, you could see when you vote was counted.

So basically the electronic voting machines are not currently the flawless things we all hoped for but are insted just as open to tampering as all of out paper based ballots. Manufactures just need to only allow importing of clear text from Memory Cards, and implement a few more precautions.

A printed reciept is as easily changed through software code as is the numbers displayed on the monitor. It is all the same.

after a receipt is printed, the voter can verify its accuracy. if the voter can keep a copy, it would seem to be difficult to tamper with this printed receipt kept by a voter using software code.

The point is that it prints the receipt to the voter but the receipt doesn't say the total votes on the machine. Just verifies it. But inside the machine the number of votes change. When they print the final count... it is already hacked and after the report is printed, the hack program deletes itself! It's that simple!
