This isn't a tandem; "tandem" means one person sits behind the other. This is a "sociable", which means the riders sit side-by-side. They're more common as quadricycles than bicycles, for some reason.
This bike appears identical to the ones custom-made made by Bob Barrett in Angola NY. Bullseye sealed hubs, 40 spoke wheels. Cranks fold up, seat crossbar folds, steering yoke folds, so not much bigger than a normal ten speed to transport. I have one. A friend bought a similar bike made in Australia a few years ago. I have ridden it with a huge pink stuffed rabbit (maybe eight pounds) as the passenger. Traffic is not problem as everyone slows down for this baby, even without the rabbit.
I have one. It's as easy to ride as any other bike. The weight differential isnt terribly critical but it will necessarily lean towards the lighter rider but you hardly notice the difference in controllability.
I know a man who has one that is in great shape. I dont think it was a good idea when I look at the thing but if someone wants to buy it im sure its for sale since it is just sitting in the basement.
BikerChrisH I have been looking high and low for a side by side like this, if you could help me get in contact with the man with the bike i would be so appreciative. Thanks
Different weight riders not a problem, the bike just leans slightly. Foot sliping off, no problem, no different from a normal tandem. Cranks, yes an engineering nightmare! This particular version was provided to top selling Miyata dealers in the late 1970s as a prize/promo. I think about 10 were made. Based on modified Takara 12 speed road bikes. There were newer mtb based versions that would be stronger and more reliable. Patent 4178008.
I was riding as the passenger (the owner, who was on the left, had the controls), and it was surprisingly easy. The owner said that he can ride solo or with riders of different sizes. Riding felt weird, but even though this was the first time I'd ever tried this, we were able to ride down the road, turn around and come back.
I agree with mbeeston rofl i saw this i was like wtf i can understand two seperate bicycles but not one and two having to pedal for it to work. One dude leans to much and they both fall or one of them tries to turn right while the other goes left,,, foot slip,,, there goes ur whole leg....
That has got bad idea written all over it! One guys foot slips off the pedal he brings the other down. Nice innovation tho, think it needs some tweaking
There have been a few of these bikes produced commercially. I don't actually own one, and I'm not sure whether anyone ever offered cranks like this for sale, but it wouldn't be too hard to make them.

excellent, you must be a natural. do you get these anywhere in the UK?
penthouse23 4 years ago
There was one on offer last summer in the U.K. They were invented there in the 1800's, so there are a few around, but only second-hand.
