I've seen many races like this at Zandvoort. Female driver Hennie Hemmes' Camaro was the fastest on the straight sections, but mostly lost the race in the curves.
Great video, great victory for the Escort. I had a Mexico in the mid-seventies and after that a RS2000. Great cars. Nowadays a mk2 Cortina Crayford
OMG I love it! I used to got to Brands Hatch mostly, but the saloons were always a favorite. And I remember seeing Dave Brodie in his black 'Run Baby Run' Escort beat a Camaro 'without' having it crash. This is still edge of the seat stuff to watch.
I`m happy to say that mike`s escort still survives today, In the exact same state it was driven here. The current owner has kept it 100% original, with only a tiny hand held fire extinguisher added for safety requirements. It even still has the original crystal palace starting permits stuck to the rear side windows!
I`ve been lucky enough to get a thorough look at the car while it was up on the ramps, and i was lost for words...
@mk1tina Yeah, it has. It also has the mudflap-like solid arch extensions. Although it must have been repainted on the outside, the inside is still completely matt black, and the engine compartment is the original greyish blue.
Its still running a BDA, although its running carbs right now. The original fuel injection was seized up because the car had been standing for a very long time, but this winter, it`s going back on...
Really enjoyed that. Not often I watch eight minutes straight but as the owner of a Camaro and a Porsche can appreciate both aspects of the drivers and the cars...
Roll forward to today. What would happen between a 2010 Camaro SS and a Ford Focus STI???
The big heavy Camaro's tyres were doubtless going off towards the end of the race, the lighter cars would most likely run softer rubber but they'll also be easier on them for the duration of the race. Some respect is therefore due to the Camaro and driver for firstly getting the tyres up to working temperature and fending the other cars off early in the race, and for handling the big car as it struggled on the tyres later in the race. Cracking action, almost a pity that Marshall didn't take it!
@1969noz The design of the camaro is lightyears ahead and anyone could buy a camaro that fast and even faster anyday. The engine in the RS is maxed out and not for every day customers.
<3 freking....wow why do they continue to make gas guzzling cars when the old school lightweight rear wheel drive cars were equally if not more fun. :( *cry* awsome vid
dah escort sound like de shiz! it running like de shiz too!!! mike came to barbados back in the day ( my dad's day) up til now the older guys here still mention his name
That big ass Camaro only pulls away in the straight. But when it comes to the technical zone that RS1600 is all over him! Fantastic sound! Great driving skills for all drivers!
Xenon HID Brightest Headlights Conversion system for All Cars, which Lasts Lifetime of your vehicle! Get your xenon hid at sparkhid(dot)com!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Just enjoyed watching this again. What really impresses me are the tremendous driving skills displayed by messrs Thomas, Crabtree and Marshall. After 15 laps of door handle to door handle scrapping I don't think there was once any contact between them at any point in the race.
now this is what motorsport is all about, close fast action with cars that are interesting and that you can relate to, the 70s stuff is mental, instead of the watered down shit we have today.
i saw this race when i was 8 years old, it made me want to get an escort, ten years later in 1982 i bought a 71 rs1600 and have it to this day, it goes great, but i cant get it to handle like that!
superb !!!,i saw frank gardner in a later camaro in the race of the champions at brands hatch around that time !!,i love the v8,s, but christ those little 1600 escorts dont half ave it !!!
What a brilliant race - 5.7litre Chevy versus 1.6litre Escort - And the result was just so close! Brilliant driving - real skill. Brilliant. many thanks for uploading!
Fabulous racing. Love the noise of Thomas's V8 Camaro.
I was stood at North Tower that day so this brings back some lovely memories of the Palace.
I might be wrong but I have a vague memory that Mike Crabtree was disqualified after the race for an infringement of some sort and big Gerry announced the winner ??
100 Sporting Moments also featured a 1970 F3 race at the Palace in which a certain James Hunt thumps Dave Morgan after being taken out on the last corner.
I was actually there at that meeting.I haven't seen a better race since.Shame the circuit was closed down, but these cars were literally racing 15ft from people's back gardens!!
I grew up a couple of miles from this track and remember hearing the engines on a saturday morning.I would get my dad to take me up to the park next to the track and we would watch through the fence. I am glad i grew up in un-PC times!!!! It was wonderful.
My father helped run the Wiggins Teape Paperchase, I have some pics of a meet at the Palace, Same Era, that I took on a box brownie as a kid, and i've met most of the said drivers.
This race is so special to me and my family because it was the only race Mike Crabtree ever won in the Willment Escort - and my Dad (David Marshall) was closely involved in managing the team and we went to every race meeting in a tiny Sprite Alpine caravan.
Before the race, Dad had a right go at the people preparing the Escort because we shared them with another team, who we always felt got the better treatment, but after giving them a piece of his mind our car was set up perfectly and won!
Thankyou for your memories,I guess your Dad had a hard time sharing service crew!.I have simular memories from the 70's to mid 80's,my Dad was a Stage Rallying man,Escort Lotus Twincam in the early days,(BDA's were to big budget).Staying in a Caravan, waking to see frost outside nearly everytime we camped(funny what we remember!).I can still smell the Castrol R & hear the BDA's in full cry deep in the forestry, well before you could see them!.What a glorious time we had.Mark
I din't know that, despite being there on the day (Ramp Bend), as a callow 13 year old. I was also there on the day that Dave Brodie set the lap record in his black Broadspeed Escort (the one witth "run baby run" painted over the front)
Stunning racing - I like the fact they blew past the Mk1. Escort with the 3 litre engine - strange AVO never thought of that - we now know why!
I was at this race in 71 - it really was as good as it looks. 35 years later, I bought myself an RS1600 and this year raced it at Mosport against a Camaro, Mustang and Galaxy 500 - when they we passing each other, it was like a wall of sheet metal you had to get past!.
Still I beat them all - the nippy little guys often win on a twisty circuit.
Maxim Rise looks like a part of the road leading to the London Radio Car Club track if going anti clockwise toward a dip in the road through an inclined bend. After which there are some terrible bolt down suspension breaker strips that necessitate you going over them in a car at 0.5 mph or less. They are badly designed and should be either replaced or completely removed. Very infuriating!
I've lost count of the times I have watched this. So many enjoyable aspects. The Boss mustang incidently was raced in this event for the first time by Martin Burrane. He went onto many wins after this. The health and safety beaks killed this type of racing. Doing the same to this country to this day.
A very interesting David and Goliath battle of muscle power versus agility. Sports car prototype style rear mounted gearbox? This seems to be an unlimited class of saloon car racing, where more or less anything could be entered as long as it was competitive. What happened to this exciting category?
Nice bit of london history we dont see much anymore, I must admit, i was just waiting for such a big car like the 5ltr Camaro to spin out on such a small track and the nippy Escort RS to nip past, suprised the Camaro lasted as long as he did.
Note the great driving without body contact for the most part.
I could make some idiotic statement on one side or the other about my favorite car, but can't this race be appreciated for what it is? Lots to be learned by watching.
Pity we can't see some clips of the European Saloon Car Championship from this time. BMW would not have put up with that yank trash can in front of them.
Brilliant! Disparate cars swapping the lead multiple times on the same lap, brute power versus handling and lower weight, without any form of driver aids, just pure talent. Wow!
ha ha RS1600 against a 6 litre muscle car....proves americans cant build cars to go round corners like british cars...what an amaizing race..now that is what i call racing..big slicks and talent and no driver aids(traction control or auto gearbox
Brilliant, i also had this on video but it got partly recorded over years ago. Can't believe BBC have lost it. Does Murray Walker know what they have done? Can we get this on DVD?
Amazing. I was walking round the remaining bits of the old Palace cicuit only yesterday and remembered this very race, which I watched with my dad on (i think)Grandstand when I was 10 years old. Has anyone got any old Group 5 racing footage? (those big banger Capris!!)
Brilliant! I saw this on Great Sporting Moments too. Never thought I'd see it again. Think the same series showed James Hunt in a F2 race? Thanks for posting such a great clip.
I probably saw this on the BBC in '71....fantastic days for Motorsport....more action in 15 laps than a whole season of F1....and those engine sounds!!
Great to find this race again! I too remember this on "A Hundred Great Sporting Moments" but lost my tape of it ages ago. I bought a Mk 1 RS2000 in 1986 after see this I think... Still got the car even if I've lost my memory... It doesn't sound as good as Crabtrees' RS1600, but it is still great fun on the road!
Simply amazing!! If you, like me cant afford to buy a cortina and go racing you should buy GT Legends for the PC, its the next best thing and very authentic :)
Excellent videos, thank you.

Perfectly balanced race... Powerful but cumbersome Camaro, nimble but less powerful Viva and the Escort in the middle... More of the same please!

proper racing - as it should be, balls out and on the edge
