  • Excellent videos, thank you.

  • 'spin, spin, spin'

    fabulous race and posting!!!

    what a cracker :)

  • Great video, thanks.

  • WOW! What a great race it was

  • I've seen many races like this at Zandvoort. Female driver Hennie Hemmes' Camaro was the fastest on the straight sections, but mostly lost the race in the curves.

Great video, great victory for the Escort. I had a Mexico in the mid-seventies and after that a RS2000. Great cars. Nowadays a mk2 Cortina Crayford

  • must of been an awesome race to be at, good to see the 1600 BDA take the win

  • Superb race, thanks for sharing.

  • Most awesome racing ever.

  • Great racing, great video love this racing. Thanks for posting.

  • The mini at 1:10 looks so cute :p

  • OMG I love it! I used to got to Brands Hatch mostly, but the saloons were always a favorite. And I remember seeing Dave Brodie in his black 'Run Baby Run' Escort beat a Camaro 'without' having it crash. This is still edge of the seat stuff to watch.

Thanks for sharing. A total favorite.

  • 6:53 spin, spin, spin...

  • I`m happy to say that mike`s escort still survives today, In the exact same state it was driven here. The current owner has kept it 100% original, with only a tiny hand held fire extinguisher added for safety requirements. It even still has the original crystal palace starting permits stuck to the rear side windows!

I`ve been lucky enough to get a thorough look at the car while it was up on the ramps, and i was lost for words...

    Awesome video by the way!

  • @cossiepowered Amazing considering its history.. Did it have steel bubble arches?

  • @mk1tina Yeah, it has. It also has the mudflap-like solid arch extensions. Although it must have been repainted on the outside, the inside is still completely matt black, and the engine compartment is the original greyish blue.

Its still running a BDA, although its running carbs right now. The original fuel injection was seized up because the car had been standing for a very long time, but this winter, it`s going back on...

  • @cossiepowered

I have footage of the car

  • @cossiepowered Vaxuahll viva GT > Escort.

  • Some excellent racing. Wish I had been there.

  • Really enjoyed that. Not often I watch eight minutes straight but as the owner of a Camaro and a Porsche can appreciate both aspects of the drivers and the cars...

Roll forward to today. What would happen between a 2010 Camaro SS and a Ford Focus STI???

  • This kind of racing truly tells what a small engine and good suspension and a good driver are capable of against a BIG V8 ENGINE! WOOOOOO FORD!!!!

  • This race is old! But it still got my heart beating!! I love old Ford cars racing.

  • Really enjoyed that. Thanks for posting.

  • lovely sound of that BDA and amaxing old skool driving!

  • awesome

  • Superb

  • Note the Mustang up from last to 3rd. CDamaro driver spent his load one lap to soon, would have easily passed for the win I reckon on the last lap.

  • Can we go back to the seventies please?

  • Amazing racing. Thank God I'm old enough to have seen things like this live.

  • Amazing to watch.

Racing nowadays is like watching scalextric.

  • thanks for uploading .. great race

  • 6.0 litre Camaro vs 1600 BDA Escort, wow, wish i was around then to watch that sort of racing.

  • Incredible race.

  • has any1 got any footage of f1 or f2 around Crystal Palace race track please.

  • wow what a race that was, bring back crystal palace race track.

  • This is the most awesome thing Ive ever seen!!

  • The big heavy Camaro's tyres were doubtless going off towards the end of the race, the lighter cars would most likely run softer rubber but they'll also be easier on them for the duration of the race. Some respect is therefore due to the Camaro and driver for firstly getting the tyres up to working temperature and fending the other cars off early in the race, and for handling the big car as it struggled on the tyres later in the race. Cracking action, almost a pity that Marshall didn't take it!

  • "Spin, spin, spin!" - loved every second of that

  • Comment removed

  • I was there that day, it was Crystal Palace racing at it's best!

  • A superb race indeed! I wish all racing was like this...

  • 5.7 liter Camaro Vs. 1.6 liter Escort. Doesn't say much for the V8.

  • escort is alot lighter

  • Crystal palace, a blast from the past, It sounds like Murray Walker commentating to.

  • so why is the camaro pulling away on the straights and still in the turns the escort dident have much chance

  • @1969noz The design of the camaro is lightyears ahead and anyone could buy a camaro that fast and even faster anyday. The engine in the RS is maxed out and not for every day customers.

  • What a race ! ... Formula one is so boring ! ...

  • <3 freking....wow why do they continue to make gas guzzling cars when the old school lightweight rear wheel drive cars were equally if not more fun. :( *cry* awsome vid

  • Great stuff! Thanks for posting.

  • Cars dont come like this anymore :(

  • Best racing ever.

  • escort BDA and twin weber carbs, best noise ever

  • Marshall in the Viva was quite ballsy round the corners but lacked straight line speed... wow that Escort sounded great...

  • This its a piece of auto history, ty for sharing MK, 5 stars.

  • supzer formidable course

  • dah escort sound like de shiz! it running like de shiz too!!! mike came to barbados back in the day ( my dad's day) up til now the older guys here still mention his name

  • Mk1 Escort and Viva VS Camaro,....sweet.

  • thanks for posting

  • truly exciting race! somthin'special 'bout dez ol'cars & era...

  • Brings back memories of my 1600 pushrod Mk 1 Escort

  • just brilliant!

  • Thank's for this :) That's was vrealy racing - not the big shit what we have today in F1. Beautiful fight - no tactics... Just "I Must Be First!!"

  • That big ass Camaro only pulls away in the straight. But when it comes to the technical zone that RS1600 is all over him! Fantastic sound! Great driving skills for all drivers!

    Thanks for posting!

  • Just enjoyed watching this again. What really impresses me are the tremendous driving skills displayed by messrs Thomas, Crabtree and Marshall. After 15 laps of door handle to door handle scrapping I don't think there was once any contact between them at any point in the race.

  • I've got a massive smile on my face. As Murray would say FAAAAN-TASTIC!!!!

Speaking of Murray, he hasn't changed a bit (spin! spin! spin! XD)

  • Pretty. F-ing, awesome racing.

  • I've been looking for this for a while - beats just about anything for a decent race

  • brilliant driving by crabtree. some of the best racing i have ever seen

  • 10/10th racing.

  • now this is what motorsport is all about, close fast action with cars that are interesting and that you can relate to, the 70s stuff is mental, instead of the watered down shit we have today.

  • i saw this race when i was 8 years old, it made me want to get an escort, ten years later in 1982 i bought a 71 rs1600 and have it to this day, it goes great, but i cant get it to handle like that!

  • wot a video really good nice to see that old skool racing cor beat it

  • Just goes to show that the yank cars are good on the straight but can't go round the curves, nothing has changed.

  • Close up racing indeed. Cant wait until you got those other videos uploaded.

  • superb !!!,i saw frank gardner in a later camaro in the race of the champions at brands hatch around that time !!,i love the v8,s, but christ those little 1600 escorts dont half ave it !!!

  • I'm sure John Roberts built the engine for Martin Burrane's car.

  • Absolutely brilliant. Gerry Marshall, what a legend. Hats off to Martin Thomas for taking victory in a 1600. Great stuff!

  • Superb!

  • Awesome, good race! What machinery!

  • What a scintillating scrap! Thank you for uploading it.

  • Bet he was gutted

  • What a brilliant race - 5.7litre Chevy versus 1.6litre Escort - And the result was just so close! Brilliant driving - real skill. Brilliant. many thanks for uploading!

  • Just Awesome!

If you have any more please upload them!

  • This is 110% PURE ADRENALINE Race !!!!!

    This is PURE GUTS !!!!!!

1000 times better than electronic puke force of GP Formula 1.

  • Fabulous racing. Love the noise of Thomas's V8 Camaro.

I was stood at North Tower that day so this brings back some lovely memories of the Palace.

I might be wrong but I have a vague memory that Mike Crabtree was disqualified after the race for an infringement of some sort and big Gerry announced the winner ??

100 Sporting Moments also featured a 1970 F3 race at the Palace in which a certain James Hunt thumps Dave Morgan after being taken out on the last corner.

  • yes i got that race too and its in colour. Dont know why they made this in b&w.. thanks for writing..

  • In 1971 the BBC was still making a few b&w programmes with its older equipment.

  • Thank you for sharing this amazing footage!

  • Great stuff...

  • go on gerry

  • I was actually there at that meeting.I haven't seen a better race since.Shame the circuit was closed down, but these cars were literally racing 15ft from people's back gardens!!

  • i,presionante, otras epocas, 5 estrellas

  • Brilliant,brilliant,brilliant!Fairly lo-tech cars,no ABS in those days,and real driving skill.A pleasure to watch.More please.

  • Shit, Thomas robbed himself of a win there by losing his cool and trying to retake the lead. :\

  • just great...

  • I grew up a couple of miles from this track and remember hearing the engines on a saturday morning.I would get my dad to take me up to the park next to the track and we would watch through the fence. I am glad i grew up in un-PC times!!!! It was wonderful.

  • Now THAT.. is motorsport.

So intense, thanks for sharing that with us :D

  • amazing video, shows golden era of racing. It's very thrilling ! Oldschool Fords Escorts&Capris will be never beaten !

  • Awesome and what a Murraytastic comentary.

  • Wow! It just does NOT get any better than this.

  • love this vid soooooooooooooooo much, i wish my mk1 1600 would move like that but i still love her..... even more than the wife shhhhhhhhhhhhhh

  • OMFG, That makes me feel old.

My father helped run the Wiggins Teape Paperchase, I have some pics of a meet at the Palace, Same Era, that I took on a box brownie as a kid, and i've met most of the said drivers.

    Many Many Thanks

  • Great stuff escorts rocked!

  • nicenicenice this is racing...

  • This race is so special to me and my family because it was the only race Mike Crabtree ever won in the Willment Escort - and my Dad (David Marshall) was closely involved in managing the team and we went to every race meeting in a tiny Sprite Alpine caravan.

Before the race, Dad had a right go at the people preparing the Escort because we shared them with another team, who we always felt got the better treatment, but after giving them a piece of his mind our car was set up perfectly and won!

  • Thankyou for your memories,I guess your Dad had a hard time sharing service crew!.I have simular memories from the 70's to mid 80's,my Dad was a Stage Rallying man,Escort Lotus Twincam in the early days,(BDA's were to big budget).Staying in a Caravan, waking to see frost outside nearly everytime we camped(funny what we remember!).I can still smell the Castrol R & hear the BDA's in full cry deep in the forestry, well before you could see them!.What a glorious time we had.Mark

  • Just a shame he jumped the start, got a ten second penalty and so Marshall got the win.

  • I din't know that, despite being there on the day (Ramp Bend), as a callow 13 year old. I was also there on the day that Dave Brodie set the lap record in his black Broadspeed Escort (the one witth "run baby run" painted over the front)

  • Amazing!!!

  • mark 1 and 2 escorts rule!!!

  • love it love it love it, my fav vid of all time... nice one

  • .....those were the days ! Stunning stuff. Such a mixture of cars. Grrreeeaaattt.

  • glad you enjoyed it

  • Stunning racing - I like the fact they blew past the Mk1. Escort with the 3 litre engine - strange AVO never thought of that - we now know why!

I was at this race in 71 - it really was as good as it looks. 35 years later, I bought myself an RS1600 and this year raced it at Mosport against a Camaro, Mustang and Galaxy 500 - when they we passing each other, it was like a wall of sheet metal you had to get past!.

Still I beat them all - the nippy little guys often win on a twisty circuit.

    Walt

  • Maxim Rise looks like a part of the road leading to the London Radio Car Club track if going anti clockwise toward a dip in the road through an inclined bend. After which there are some terrible bolt down suspension breaker strips that necessitate you going over them in a car at 0.5 mph or less. They are badly designed and should be either replaced or completely removed. Very infuriating!

  • I've lost count of the times I have watched this. So many enjoyable aspects. The Boss mustang incidently was raced in this event for the first time by Martin Burrane. He went onto many wins after this. The health and safety beaks killed this type of racing. Doing the same to this country to this day.

  • A very interesting David and Goliath battle of muscle power versus agility. Sports car prototype style rear mounted gearbox? This seems to be an unlimited class of saloon car racing, where more or less anything could be entered as long as it was competitive. What happened to this exciting category?

  • Great video..

I LOVE classic cars and I ABSOLUTELY LOVE ESCORTS..

    Great cars, vids, and races..

Check out my vids, plz ;)

    THANKS FOR THE VID.

  • Fantastic Racing, that RS1600 sounded Wicked.

  • Fantastic race !! I worked with Mike Crabtree in the early 90's, He's an absoloute gent as well as being a good driver !

  • It was a fantastic era, I used to work for Janspeed in the 90's and met many good names... thanks for your comment...

  • Nice bit of london history we dont see much anymore, I must admit, i was just waiting for such a big car like the 5ltr Camaro to spin out on such a small track and the nippy Escort RS to nip past, suprised the Camaro lasted as long as he did.

  • Excellent racing.

The classic big car/ small car battle.

Note the great driving without body contact for the most part.

I could make some idiotic statement on one side or the other about my favorite car, but can't this race be appreciated for what it is? Lots to be learned by watching.

  • Some great racing on a great track, fantastic, made my day seeing this!!

  • Pity we can't see some clips of the European Saloon Car Championship from this time. BMW would not have put up with that yank trash can in front of them.

  • Pure racing. I love it :)

  • Brilliant! Disparate cars swapping the lead multiple times on the same lap, brute power versus handling and lower weight, without any form of driver aids, just pure talent. Wow!

  • fabulous!!

  • I never get bored of this, best motor race i've ever seen hands down.

  • absolutely superb, i look forward to seeing some more

  • Superb Video - Thanks So Much For Posting It!!!

  • ha ha RS1600 against a 6 litre muscle car....proves americans cant build cars to go round corners like british cars...what an amaizing race..now that is what i call racing..big slicks and talent and no driver aids(traction control or auto gearbox

  • Isn't youtube amazing? i was thinking about this the other day after a conversation with a youngster about Vivas. Superb.

  • This is real saloon racing, no engine management or electronic gizmos ,the youngsters would be off the track driving these monsters.

  • Is there any web page where this videos are found?

  • yeah, y o u t u b e d o t c o m

    ;)

  • wow what a race!!!!!!!!!!

  • best vid i've seen in ages :)

  • Just awesome! That's real racing with real cars!

  • i totally agree :)

  • Brilliant, i also had this on video but it got partly recorded over years ago. Can't believe BBC have lost it. Does Murray Walker know what they have done? Can we get this on DVD?

  • Amazing. I was walking round the remaining bits of the old Palace cicuit only yesterday and remembered this very race, which I watched with my dad on (i think)Grandstand when I was 10 years old. Has anyone got any old Group 5 racing footage? (those big banger Capris!!)

  • Amazing! that's the idea... unfortunately, lost, these days in the 21th century...

  • Brilliant! I saw this on Great Sporting Moments too. Never thought I'd see it again. Think the same series showed James Hunt in a F2 race? Thanks for posting such a great clip.

  • I probably saw this on the BBC in '71....fantastic days for Motorsport....more action in 15 laps than a whole season of F1....and those engine sounds!!

  • more please total and un adultrated joy!!! go on the escort!!! ford for ever!!

  • Great race, thanks for posting.

  • Please more !!

  • Great to find this race again! I too remember this on "A Hundred Great Sporting Moments" but lost my tape of it ages ago. I bought a Mk 1 RS2000 in 1986 after see this I think... Still got the car even if I've lost my memory... It doesn't sound as good as Crabtrees' RS1600, but it is still great fun on the road!

  • this is one of the best races ever

  • ffffffaaaaaaaaaaaannnnnnntastic!

  • fantasitic racing murry walker at his best

  • Thanks for the upload...a fantastic piece of film...BRAVO...

  • top stuff! remember seeing this on "100 great sporting moments" on the BBC years back

  • You may then remember Franks Williams in Mexico at Brands same TV series. Keith

  • Wow, that was intense! Love the sounds those old cars make.

  • What a race! A joy for eye's and Ears! Such a shame they closed 'the Palace.

  • Simply amazing!! If you, like me cant afford to buy a cortina and go racing you should buy GT Legends for the PC, its the next best thing and very authentic :)

  • Perfectly balanced race... Powerful but cumbersome Camaro, nimble but less powerful Viva and the Escort in the middle... More of the same please!

  • proper racing - as it should be, balls out and on the edge

  • Awesome, love the old stuff. the only place to find racing like this these days is at club level.

  • Best...racing...video...ever! Thanks for posting this.

  • Love it ...Thanks for posting it what driving and love the cars

  • quality,nothing like todays bouring cars :(

  • Absolutely awesome, looking forward to more of the same :)
