I had no idea the quality of components old magnavox sets had. The Hf horn resembles the one I saw on a Altec A5 Voice of the theater when I visited a 1912 theater that I will be helping remodel. The A5 was the l speaker that was installed when the theater went to sound on film. It was driven by a RCA/Simplex amp with a pair of push pull 6V6 tubes with a matching spare incase of failure . I used to see field coil speakers in old radios where the field coil was used as a B+ choke coil.
Another GREAT job Bill. You know what amazes me? This system sounds so incredible out of the cabinet, just think how it must have impressed it's owners when they first got it home and turned it on for the first time, just imagine...
I had done some reading up on field coil speakers at one time; I remember when I was a kid there were still plenty of home entertainment products around with them. We had a nice upright console radio and remember asking my dad why the speaker was different at the back. That HF driver is also quite remarkable. Magnavox really put some astonishing electronics in their products!
Cool. I'd never seen one with the big horn tweeter before. Probably the only thing comparable from that time period would be something like the Scott 800B. They had a 2-way speaker system with a 15" full range and a 4" tweeter mounted in the center of it. I think they have similar power to the Magnavox stuff, a pair of 6L6 tubes in push-pull. REally its a shame what the Magnavox name represents now vs what it did prior to the 70s.
All that bass with no baffle... Nice.

@gabevee3 The camera was right on top of the woofer, and seemed to magnify the bass

Billy Joel never sounded so good.

Very impressive sound quality, with all the parts being that old. Still, I'd give it a good thorough check for any worn wiring or leaking caps.
