  • Why we dont hear the same sound on the snare when you switch hands If you play constantly and with the same power on each shot it supposed to sound the samething and also you don't seem to play relax

  • @nickrock12 the sound is just him hitting different parts of the head. he is fairly relaxed, he just wants to seem clean and prepared

  • Derek, your routine is phenomenal! Thank you so much. See ya on your forum.

  • anyone who has shit to talk or nothing better to comment than his lack of blinking or speech issues needs a life. if you play this well, lets see your technique...douchebags

  • 6:14 - ' I'm Lord of the Darkness '

  • the snake is amused by this

  • thats insane, thats why is so freakin good!!

  • THATS WHY HIS BAND IS CALLED SERPENTS RISE!

  • Gene Hoglan is a much more fun teacher... yeah, Derek is little more fast but Gene is fun. Oh!, the snake!!! 3:05

  • Could anyone tell me the practice kit he is using?

  • This kinda trips you out after listening to it for a while O.o

  • i love how his sticks are in a coffin case lol i want it

  • I learned this rudiment as like the first rudiment i ever learned drumming Its called 8 on a hand. OR iguess would be called 8 on a foot in this scenario. I look forward to learning the rudiments all over again on double bass but it can be frustrating it feels like starting over

  • This bass drum exersice is awsome. If you do not think so, try it. I can not do it this fast for long at all. I have to go way slower. That makes me want to do this everday.

  • did anyone else noticed the snake in the cage at 3:05?

  • @conterooski Yeah, Derek has a passion for 'em. (:

  • is he playing heel up?

  • @phre3k187 yes he is :p sick!

  • this is a very good exercise thanks roddy!!!!

  • i only do the hands for 10 minutes then the feet for 10 minutes, i have also started way slower, 160 on hands and 140 on feet and im slowly building up speed, is a great workout!

  • i had to start at 120 bpm in order to complete it entirely....i just did the hands/feet combo for 10 min...2 min sections like he said....but i started at 120 so i can build control and muscle development in my legs.

Despite the fact i can control upwards to 170-180 bpm 16ths pretty comfortably

  • Is it worth to practice those RRRR LLLL with feet alot slower? Cuz Im not able to play my left leg so fast, only about 130 bpm:(

  • @maqprus instead of RRRR LLLL just do LLLLLLLLLLLLLL... etc. it helps :)

  • @maqprus try to go R L R L R L R L R L and push your left leg , if not try going LLLLLLLL at 150 bpm and keep pushing yourself through the tempos :D

  • Holy shit, it's a fuckin' snake!

    (~3:00)

  • @iDoubleBass shit got disturbed....lol... trying to find the way out...

  • How is he so relaxed?

  • @letsago0 lots and lots of years and hours of practice. doing this everyday will help ALOT, i know it has for me i can hit 220 solidly for minutes just cause of practicing this. also focus on breathing while playing, its another very important key to drumming fast.

  • enfermo! jajaj,aguante derek!

  • LOL i haven't practiced double bass for months and months..i think i'm gonna have to start WAY slower than this!!! gotta build up my muscle memory and everything else!!

  • those dont look like very powerful strokes with his right fot to me at 6:35

  • now this is the hard part ..

  • LOL that snake is going nuts! hahaha! oh!, and here's another good exercise, try doing paradiddles with both hands and feet @ 180 bpm....that'll really messs you up, but it's a great exercise for both endurance ,and coordination, can't do 180bpm?, go for 160 bpm, or 140 bpm, then try and go for 160, or 180.....good luck!

  • These are some excellent endurance techniques, but I wonder how many parents have killed their children for practicing this?

Mr. Roddy is a robot!!!!! He only has the pet snake in the case, so he appears human!!!

  • @EricAntonik Got my doublebass pedal 4 days ago and my parents kill me because of that monotone sound :D:D:D:D

  • his left foot is way weaker

  • he's right! these exercises VASTLY improved my drumming in about 2 months.

  • You can tell his left foot isn't as fast as the right. lol

  • @Wavyink

Maybe because his right arm/foot is dominant?

  • this is gonna be so nooby..... but with a metronome if you put it at 180 bpm how can u tell if ur doing it with your feet?

  • @Strang3Mountain same way you tell if your doing it with your hands

  • hey dude just wana tell you your awesome, could you do some favour to us? could you tape your double bass too see how you tens it, and put all, like to know and try using it like you do. thank you very much

  • The more I watch these double bass videos, the more I notice not to let you feet and legs throw your body of balance.

  • what do you do if you made one leg stronger than the other?

  • @AmbitiousMOnkey1 you go at a speed that the slower foot can go. you can only go as fast as your slave foot can go, so train your feet at the fastest speed your slave foot can go(slave being the slower) and keep going until its as fast as your main foot and then up your top speed

  • what do you do if you've already made one leg stronger than the other?

  • nice!!1 thnx!

  • Great drumming and thanks for the advised.

  • what kinda pedals does he use?

  • @he uses axis or tricks i see him useing both but in thise vid i think he is using pearl eleminators

  • 3:16 Yes I am lol

  • Its not until you start an exercise such as this do you realize just how weak your weak side is. I thought I had pretty good independence, but after doing this, my left foot sucks!

  • @mellodge lol my right foot sucks XD

  • the confidence on his face when he promises that it will improve

  • Wow this exercise is much harder than it looks, I do it at 150bpm and I'm wasted afterward.

  • I read ages ago that cycling or using an excercise bike improves your double bass playing because you use the same muscles. Anyone know if this is true?

  • I think the best way to improve your double bass skills is practicing double bass...

  • @Blacklorigine but he is showing how to make your limbs independent

  • @mellodge it improve your resistance, but not your technique =P

  • @mellodge I run on my tredmill a bit. And i really think its working against me with double bass. Its like, i have muscles in places i dont need it so it slows me down, but i can hit harder for longer. I play about an hour or more a day and run about 6 miles every 3 days. im at about 160 - 180 bpm but i was able to break 180 easier that i can now.... if that helps answer your question.

  • This exercise kicks my ass everyday before practice. Incredible exercise! Thank you Mr. Roddy!

  • dxhjkg

    и что такого в этом ?!!

  • HAHA! got him! he stops! 1:39 hahahaha then at 1:52 hahahaha im so terrible for finding that stuff

  • He stops to point out the difference between the exercises dude, note that he is changing the exercise when he stops

  • yea i kno that, but he fucks up a few times haha

  • I don't own a double bass pedal but would using my hi-hat pedal as the double bass pedal work?

  • im trying to get my feets very fast so i started to play from 100 bpm and building up. is normal that my upper parts of legs hurt?

  • yep, also depends if you pick up legs or using mostly foot

  • yea your thighs are a big part in the balance it takes for speedy double bass and single foot blasts. at around 180 or more I think thats when you go from knee motion to more hovering and ankle motion

  • good drills

but... omg! he has a snake! 3:20

  • hahaha, Derek has more than 50 snakes ;)

  • oh my god! really?!

damn, im not a fan of snakes,

    they give me goosebumps!

  • v6g3 give me a break... maybe there is a better way to practise these things or maybe not. but these videos meaning is to help people not to brain wash them. you dont like it dont do it then try to find your better way. but i can tell you these have helped me a damn lot!!

  • That's the whole point, actually. It's training muscle memory for endurance. Working out at the gym is pretty brainless too, but that doesn't mean it isn't good for you.

  • Lawrence Stone / Joe Morello "Stone Killer" exercise... I'm getting a cramp just watching this :P

  • Dude, your snake's running away @ 3:06 !!

  • I was thinking about getting axis but went with Iron cobras instead. I got the rolling glide without a cobra coil and absolutely love them. i transitioned from a single chain mapex pedal. and iv seen people go much faster than 255 on ICs so i think im set for life.

  • i will also stress that pdps are good starting pedals. never a good long use. after you hit about 195+ they will match..

  • YES HE BLINKED!! (1:12)

  • @alfalex38 that wasnt a blink taht was clseing his eyes for a couple seconds

  • I know Derek doesn't have time to answer this, but does anybody have any suggestions on how to quiet a kick pad like the one he's using? I just bought one to play at night and that shit is loud. living 3rd shift hours sucks when you have a day shift room mate

  • I don't know man. I need kick pad too, hom expensive is it? I have some ideas how to make mi own practice kick pad, I saw guy on youtube, search for video "Chris Thrope swivel technique", he has interesting hand made kick pad, and I'm going to make for me one like that, see and tell me what you think about that kick pad.

  • just put a towel on it

  • Use.try to find a decent sized and not to fluffy pillow, i use the one from my coutch and it works great

  • OK I have the same problem, Get an old dish rag or wash cloth and duct tape it to the pad. Also another thing to do is set your pedals up on the foot of a couch (facing the couch) I grabbed a 1x1 board and used it to anchor my pedals down. If you watch the begining of this Derek did say it was ok not to use a kick pad or pedals. basically you just want to do teh movement and stay in time. remember its an endurance exercise.

  • yeah good call. Thanks for the advice man. and thank you to everybody else who replied. turns out the biggest problem with my noise level is the old Hardwood flooring in my house. great for acoustics, terrible for sleeping roommates. I ended up making a mini-stage out of a 2 pieces of plywood, and 2 pieces of couch cushion foam. quiets it a fair deal and reduces the vibrations in the floor.

  • hell yeah! one of his pythons wanna do some blasts too!! haha

  • Is this supposed to be played with the heel up or heel toe technique?

  • any way thats comfortable

  • not realy... i must be done singles... heel up help...

  • That is not so important, you can play both techniques if you want.

  • derek is well known for playing flat foot

  • derek's wavy hair is so cool :-)

  • :-DD haha yeah

  • this is a deathmetal drumer......dont ruin this vid with DR****F****

  • How, because he has curly hair

  • tried about every other practice method..

this is by far the best.

  • does anybody know what kind of practice kit that is?

  • looks for me like it is an "selfmade" kit out of Roland e-drum pads and parts

  • yea... but i would not use that hard bassdrum pad because it does not give the right feel... well i suppose it doesn't matter to him :D

  • But as he said in the 2nd video you doesn't even need tu use a pedal or pads it's only to developpe your muscule and endurance

  • heey dereck we start the lesson slow then fast or start fast ??

  • This is an endurance exercise that will progress in speed over a period of weeks so it's really important to start at a speed thats comfortable for you.

And really that should be about 10-20bpm below your sticking point.

  • I'm sorry what's the sticking point? How do I know what's my sticking point?

    Thanks in advance

  • thankyou derek roddy this really helped the speed of my hands n feet everything feels better to play :)

  • I'm sure if this is help for one person he is content ;) (sorry for my english)

  • What are you talking about?

  • I'm not even close to that speed with my feet..

  • anybody!!i need some advice. Ive been doing this exercises daily for 2 weeks or so. Im doing it at 180 and im having lots of trouble (with the feet). AT first, it was hard and kinda sloppy, but i could do it. after like 4 days, i began to feel really confortable with it and i wasnt struggleing at all. but for the last 4 days or so, it started getting horrible, even worse than when i first started. can anyone tell me WHAT THE FUCK IS GOING ON????

  • Your probably practising too much. After the first couple of days you were right on the edge of over practising but had improved - but now you've gone too far. My advice would be to back off for a while until you feel that your legs are fully recovered.

There IS such a thing as overpractising, just as there IS such a thing as overtraining.

  • couldnt agree more... I duno if the same applies to overpracticing as overtraining... but get lots of rest, veggies, water and protein :) good carbs and healthy fats? :P

  • Yeah man, of course it does. I've applied so many concepts from bodybuilding to my practise regime...it's done wonders for my foot development!

  • whatever you do don't give up. that's happened to me before. exactly what you described, but I just kept on daily, daily, daily. i had to really focus and concentrate and analyze what I was doing with my feet. it takes months. enjoy the journey to getting better.

  • hes basically doing the stone killer with his feet.

  • he is using his ankle only lol guys wtf...

  • Is he doing heel-toe at all? Hard to tell.

  • At that speed, it's hard to play heel-toe that clean.

  • hes going all flat foot...ive had the oppurtunity to sit behind him while he drums(thank you ressurection drums FL!!!! :P) but yeah considering he lives in florida he worked at a drum store named ressurection drums....and he does mini clinics there all the time when hes not touring or recording and u can sit right behind him while he drums its unbelieveable but yes he plays all flat foot

  • this stuff is really awesome for speed and accuracy, the problem is I have to do this stuff (a long session like he demonstrates here) at least twice a month to keep the quickness and perfect hits. Thats me though, everyones brain is different. I always end up forgetting and getting sloppy if I dont practice like this alot.

  • hmmm i say he plays heel up since he often uses his legs when he hits the bass...

  • You don't explain when you start the 8s and 16s that you start on the and of the click and not on the 1. Why?

  • hmmmmm interesting...now in which drum lesson does he say...ok let's play BEHOLD JUDAS together!!!!

  • You doubt me brother? Why would I lie about something stupid like that?

  • You use the technique which is best for you and i believe you, People can use one technique but when they use another they just can't do it, i'm like that so i stick to heel up cause it works for me! I say stick to heel toe cause it works for you, and respect cause thats a bitch of a technique to learn.

  • heel up and heel down is different story.... we talked about heel up and heel toe. you wrote " with heel up only 150 " now you write 200....

  • I was just giving an example of how with one technique you can play faster than using another. Like i said yes i can achieve speeds of 200 BPM + with heel up but i can't even do heel toe so it makes sense.

  • i agree with the differences in technique . but you should have pointed it out that you dont actually mean "heel toe" and "heel up" instead just used some RANDOM techniques to explain this point . these particular two techniques are very bad examples because i really doubt that anyone who can play 200 bpm+cant do 150 with HEEL UP(!) heel down and whatever is a different story. since you used this particular technique in your example it made it very unclear that this was just a general comment .

  • Well sorry for the confusion but some people like to develop one technique more than others. Heel toe is completely different to that of heel up, for one you use both parts of your foot rather than one, you do two strokes on one pedal rather than one, and if you have been practicing this for a long time and have bettered yourself at it, when you try to do heel up the coordination could be gone as you are trying singles rather than doubles and using different muscles. I'm sure you understand.

  • Liook at George Kollias. He plays up to 280 bpm with heel up and swivel technique.

  • i know that...

  • he has some muscles :D

  • he looks like he's getting very bored at this point

  • is that an electric kit or a practice kit

  • it's just practice pads. i think they're by gibraltar.

  • was that a snake?

  • yep he is a part time snake farmer

  • Heel-up I can only do 150bpm. Heel-toe I can do well over 200bpm..should I stick with heeltoe?

  • heel up gives you more of a workout

  • not only that but is usually more uniform. Look at top drummers like roddy, kollias...all use single strokes on feet only. More power that way too

  • heel toe is not uniform as compared to heel up

    cheers :D

  • lol... you can do over 200 with heel toe and without it just lousy 150 ? that sounds somehow unbelievable...

  • It aint that hard to believe! I can do 200 BPM using heel up but heel down i'd struggle to do 120 or something slow like that. If you can do one technique but not the other, it makes perfect sense.

  • IMPORTANT: Remember to breathe comfortably while practicing.

  • dont breathe at all breaking uses muscles! lol

  • Do you mean blasting uses muscles? In order to keep those muscles relaxed and moving it is actually important to breathe comfortable. If something becomes too difficult you can always stop and play it again breathing full breaths and surprisingly it may become easier.

  • I have a question, what if your hand speeds were faster than your feet speeds like i can play at 180 BPM for hand exercise but working my way up from 100 BPM for feet. My question is should i work up from 100 BPM with both hands and feet or continue working limbs at different speeds?

  • i have the same problem, hands 150 bpm, feets 120 bpm!! i do them separeted, cuz is only to develop your muscles, and they are wonking fine...

  • I practice my hands alone just to push them but I make sure I practice my hands with my feet. I make sure I'm playing accurate with my hands but focus more attention on my feet to build them up. Right now I can do 8's at 160 with my feet and 8's at 180 with my hands so I'm playing a lot around 170 to feel a comfort zone. I hope this helps.

  • bloody machine gun :D

    bang-bang-bang-bang-bang-bang-bang.......

    it neva ends.....

    DRUM LORD !!!

  • the man doesn't blink :)

  • The guy has got SOME stamina lol.

  • where can i get a practice set like that? i really need one so i can play at night and shit

  • DW has a decent 5 pad practice kit/stand. Same thing for me, I can't practice on kit in my apartment

  • Oh yeah.

But sometimes boring repetition is exactly what it takes to get better.

  • exactly :D

  • I don`t know how Derek do that. I will never play > 180 BPM. I can play very confortable at 150 BPM but BOTH legs. I have no idea what`s wrong i don`t have any control about my left foot. Once I do this exercise on left foot very well sometimes it sounds shitty. Agrr I hate my left leg, foot, ankle whatever.

  • try doin 7 stroke rolls on your feet starting with your left foot

L R L R L R L< ! ACCENT THE LAST HIT. your foot will get stronger. had to do that to get my left to catch up.

  • Thanks for help. I`m going to try it and i will post here after some month of doing this exercise when i will know the results. Thank`s again !

  • Como m excita la cara q pone Derek cuando toca lo amooo!!!! *+*Daydrummer*+*

  • haha im visting my mom right now so im without any pads or drums. luckily i brought my pedals! time to throw down a computer chair and start beating the side of that couch

  • omg! to get this all right you really have to practice and stick at it for hours, no messing around in metal drumming! Derek roddy has proved that it is all worth it!!

  • he makes it look soo easy but truth is, its not lol. ive had 6 years of drumming and almost a year ive been trying double bass and i still cant go as fast as 180bpm

  • Hey if he cant go at that tempo yet, who cares. start slower as derek said in his other video, but not to slow...you still wanna feel that burn.

  • 180BPM is respectable if you aren't using triggers.

  • whenever you're sitting just start practicing that double kick. i've been doing it now for about 2 years and im well over 200 bpm.

your parents or whatever may get annoyed with you constantly tapping your feet but its worth it in the end.

  • wow..... honestly i don't know if i'll ever devote my self to drumming like that. I definitely enjoyed it back in middle school, but i let it go for some stupid reason. 2 months huh, i'll give it a try once i saved up enough money for a double bass pedal. Great job man, your living the dream, no doubt.
