@cb7pwn You can buy a nice reel for under $150, like the Daiwa TD-Pro bait caster - it's a very nice reel that should retail for around $125 - by the time you add the tax, you'll be close to your budget.
Thanks for taking time to write to us and good luck on the water!
@1fastcat243 There are a lot of good mono lines out there, but P-Line is one of our favorites. If you are looking for good line and a good price, then select the Bass Pro Shops brand "Excel" - It is also one of our favorites!
@Makotv1 With no backing, what could happen is that once the lie gets wet right through, it will "slip" on you when you go to set the hook - it will slip so badly that it will be as if you have no tension at all.
It would be best to un-spool your reel and wrap the braided line back on to the spool it came from, then put on some mono backing, and then re-spool.....it will be worth the effort.
Thanks for writing in and until next time, good luck and good fishing.
@1fastcat243 Otherwise, once your braid gets wet, it will "slip" on you. For example, when you go to set the hook on a fish, if you do not have a backing on your braid and your braided line is wet, there will be no resistance at all....it will be like you had your drag set on the lowest possible setting.
A little bit of backing will go a long way towards having a good day on the water.
Thanks for writing in and until next time, good luck and good fishing!
@thundermistlures thank u very much...i just got a bait cast reel and rod i hope to get a lot this summer...keep up the great work u guys make excellent videos
@ShortTrackn Glad you are enjoying the videos and thanks for taking time to write. I picked up this hat from Cableas, a few years ago........we wanted to have these hats with our logo, but could not find the exact same one (not sure if they are discontinued?) There are many hats which are similar, but that one in particular is very good and very comfortable.
The closest hat we could find is at Cabelas and it's called the Cabelas Suncutter Cap - itme # IK-951343.
@ShortTrackn Glad you are enjoying the videos and happy to hear you are getting back into fishing! On this day, we spooled up with 20 lb test line from Mustad (not sure of the diameter).
Hope you are able to get a line wet a few times this summer - thanks for writing in and until next time good luck and good fishing!

Hey thundermistlure, I am really excited about fishing season again!
I started fishing last year when i moved to MN but it was short lived due to training.
I hope watching your videos help me in the waters this spring/summer.
I have a few questions, most of the fish I catch are sunnies, crappie's and perch. What type of pole should I purchase and what type of line? I have a $30 ugly stick but i felt it was a bit to uncomfortable... well, running out of room, Thank you Sir and God bless...
@dogerfan100 When fishing for panfish, it is best to use an ultralight rod with a cork handle (such as Bass Pro micro light spinning rods) Combo this with a nice small ultra light reel (like a Pfluger Trion reel), and 4 or 6 lb test monofilament line, and you will have a great time on the water! P.s. The rod does not have to be long - 4 1/2 ft ot 5 1/2 foot long rods, are nice to use.
@tubbissimo76 Hi Simone - thanks for writing in and for the kind words - glad you are enjoying our videos. Also, in case you have not seen them yet, we also have videos/articles on how to best use a bait casting rod, to avoid "birds nests & backlashes".
Hope you have a great year on the water this year in Italy!
@FreshwaterAngling It's a Diawa coastal inshore bait casting reel, model 153HL which is the left handed model - the model 153H is the right handed model.
@jasenstevens21 We have a few catfish videos on our site which will show you some perfect catfish rigs, that you may find very helpful - if you get a chance, check them out on our YouTube channel, or at our Thundermist Fishing Tips web site.
@tlaza1317 Once the braided line gets wet, it will no longer "grip" your spool - so what will happen is that when you pull to set the hook, there will be no resistance, as you line will "slip"...it woudl be the same as if you loosened your drag all the way and tried to set the hook - there would not be any resistance.
Adding a mono backing will prevent this from happening.
Hope this helps - thanks for tuning-in and for writing in and until next time, good luck and good fishing.
i got pretty good with my baitcaster but my problem is it doesn't cast very far and i have to use heavyish weights maybe it's because the reel was relatively cheap but it a tip or two would be nice :p
@punkboy198 We have another video which will give you tips on this subject - you will find it on our youtube channel - or you can search for it on our Thundermist Fishing Tips web site....along with eh video, we also have a few articles which you may find helpful.

xBassxHunterx20 7 months ago
@xBassxHunterx20 Preferably, use mono or fluorocarbon line and 12 lb test or higher would be best.

@1fastcat243 if you have a wiffle spool you dont need to put a backing on or some people put a little bit of tape to hold the line

Very interesting video as always!
The Summer time is coming in Italy and I have to spool my baitcaster soon.
It is my first bait casting reel, usually I had always open face spinning reels so it will be a new experience for me.
Thank you very much Ivo and congratulations for your website, videos and products. Bye, Simone
