  • Uhhh, Greenland was settled by Indians before the Icelanders settles there (NOT Norwegians - idiots). And settling is not colonization. There was no King or crown in Iceland and Erik the red was bound as an outlaw by common law of the people; so technically he ran to Greenland...Just as many of the Icelanders 'ran' from Harald of Norway's tyranny (the very reason they saw no need for a King in Iceland).

  • its funny, cuz almost no-one in sweden and denmark was vikings. the whole viking thing comes from norway

  • @BattleHideout Haha. The viking from norway did not even raid. They most likely explored a lot, such as Iceland and greenland. The real warriors came from Denmark and Sweden. Denmark went to the west, and Sweden went to east, and Norway went north. You do know that denmark ruled england during the viking age?

  • @Ralleq1 its funny. because your just trying to protect the others from a bad name (and have you ever learned anything of this?)

  • @BattleHideout It is a fact? Are saying that danish vikings did not raid? How would you explain Danelaw in England, how would explain the fact that Denmark ruled England for 30 years? How would you explain the huge amount of vikingships thats has been found in Denmark? Denmark is the country where there as been found most evidence from the viking age. Read about history dude ;)

  • @BattleHideout Canute the great did also won the battle the norwegian king, Olav Haraldson. Do some research. Cause this is just embarrasing.

  • @Ralleq1 Vikings from Norway did not raid? Five of the most famous cities of Ireland were raided, then founded by Norwegian vikings, including Dublin and Limerick. Ask any Irish historian; He might have something to say about that. Or the Scots. Read some Sagas my friend. Besides, when you say 'Viking' you are saying 'raider' or 'raiding' as a verb. Otherwise, just say Norwegian.

  • proud swede!

  • Also by you Danes and swedes.

  • So many stupid comments by pussy Norwegians. The pussification of Norwegians the last centuries is extreme. Go back to facebook and touch yourself.

  • I live in the right place, in the wrong time. But still, Oden guides me thru life !

  • i wish the vikings managed to take over europe... the world would of been such a much more nicer place.

  • you the pussy i bet u touch ur self everyday

  • The viking culture is so freaking beutifull too ! i love the look

  • Romans civilized the world, twice. Romans had conquered so much territory that they couldn't protect it all at once. So yeah, not much merit for the Vikings.

  • @FernandoLuis191 but the romans were gay, the vikings were real men :D

  • @DaPalleKuling Huh? The Romans conquered the world, and civilized it.

  • @DaPalleKuling The Roman's weren't gay, the Greeks were POSSIBLY involved in homosexual activites, but the majority of the Roman population were not homosexual, even if they were, so what? That doesn't mean they weren't great soldiers, I would rather fight a heterosexual modern-day man, than a ravingly homosexual Roman or Greek soldier, because I'd get my arse beat (pun intended) by the Romans/Greeks.

  • Just because someone is homosexual doesn't mean they're wimps. I would be terrified to fight a gay Roman gladiator. He might beat me half to death and then fuck me. That sounds VERY unpleasant.

  • Im so proud that my ancestors were vikings. Scandinavia and the north rule and you know it :)

  • @TheIcelandicPatriot They are not like the Romans or Greeks.

  • @Abdikarimelmi Neither were the Romans and Greeks like the ancient Chinese and Japanese and yet they are all fantastic :)

  • Erik den röde! xD

  • Vi er alle vikinger! Nordmenn, dansker, svensker og islendinger! Men NORGE er i mitt hjerte! <3

  • @ahhgirl67 Håller med dig, men Sverige tar platsen i mitt!

  • I suspect that the percentage of 'Raiders' the came from the Norse societies of this time was actually quite small. Every society has it's share of high-strung young men determined to prove themselves in combat.. and in the case of the Norse, it is the reputation of those few that stamp our collective memories with their exploits..

  • @VelikyUstyug1 Actually it was quite the opposite, the nordic vikings were big men, big and strong. Because of their eating habbits (often fiested and ate ALOT) and theyre hard work made them very big and muscular

  • @MistahAwesome Dear Mistah, you may well be right- although I don't think that muscles and nutrients make for a raider. To be a 'raider' is a mindset... just as some of the biggest toughest bullies are very small men.

  • if im irish am i a viking?

  • @riptorna556

    Nope just a alcoholic.

  • @riptorna556 Depends...parts of the British Isles were settled by the Norse.

  • lol the norwegians had the most colourfull?? sure if we say in discorvery and Long travel.. none of them outshine any.. the norwegians shined in their travel and discovery's the danes shined in the Conquering land the Swedes shined in getting far into russia and even reaching down to Constantinople all 3 great in their own ways

  • the axe was the most lethal not due to its throw ability but Penetration when its punched.. and axe has a much more penetration quality to armor and chailmail even a shield than a sword has

  • The vikings did not terrorize Christians. Most of them were christians themselves.

And like the mongols and huns, being feared as inhumane monsters makes raids so much easier. When people surrender and hand over their riches without trying to fight, it's much easier work. And in asia these hordes spread rediculously overblown stories about their killings, so I wouldn't give too much about the stories about vikings either.

  • The English already were vikings!

  • they were terrorists

  • @williameva ignorant fool. Read a book.

  • dougiewhite778 Berserkers were no viking tribe. They were a typ of warriors from viking society who enbodied the fury of a raging bear. They would before each battle work themeselfs into a state of rage that they didnt feal pain. Only a killing wound could stop a beserker. There was allsow another branch of beserkers known as ulfsarks who embodied the cold fury of a wolf. I'm myself from sweden so I know this.

  • ive heard that a viking tribe called the "bezerkers" that arrived in eastern england all took magic mushrooms before they charged on to a village. Thats how this word got into english language. Anyone know if this is true?

  • Much of the Viking age was spent in raids and campaigns against the Saxons and the Franks, formidable warrior peoples with their own history of savagery and terror. (Charlemagne, a Christian, beheaded 5,000 Saxons in one day.) Incidentally, why all the shots at Cecilia Holland, a brilliant historical novelist?

  • Proud to have Scandinavian heritage!

Along with Germanic and Celtic. This was waaay back mind you, but its in my blood :P

  • this makes me proud to be a norwegian :D! but as many of the other commets here, they were not terrorists -.- they were also peacful nice to women

  • Yes, knowledge is a good thing. Unfortunately Cecelia Holland is clueless, and makes so many false statements here that it's clear that she's not a professional historian. How do I know? My MA in history. No professional Historian would say the things she is saying; inflammatory, antagonistic rhetoric. Shame on History Channel for buying this garbage and not checking it before showing it.

  • lol the vikings did not kill many monks.

They said "leave or else" and the monks left.

Then the monks spread the rumour that the vikings HAD killed monks becouse their we're pist becouse the vikings took their gold and silver.

  • when i heard the line "everywhere the christians are the victims of massacre"

    ....I smiled! :)

  • Because one rode to asa bay?

  • After some research and ponderng about the meaning of the song.

Yeah, the song held some truth about what christianity came with!

  • @manc84 I am pure blood Norse, last name Jorgenson, written family history back to the fifteen hundreds. Im as proud of my history as anyone of Norse heritage. But true Christianity is about peace and love. Killing people who follow these principals is nothing to smile about. Unless killing innocents gives you wood or something.

  • @oberstinky : WHY NOT???

  • Fucking metal! the vikings killed christians more than any else!

  • Viking ships vs Mongol horses

  • @sonofmanchu Interesting point. The more I read the more I wonder if anything but internal strife in the Mongol empire could have stopped the Mongol armies from marching to the Bay of Biscay.

  • I feel so proud of my Viking lineage!

  • aaw your so lucky, i decend from blacksmiths.

  • agreed!

  • same here eh :p

  • Thats how we created the welfare in scandinavia :p

  • he he

  • @Tributorious ...and provoked jealousy to thet rest of us ! sallute from Greece !

  • yeah :P being adapted to the climate of scandinavia and the way of living, it was only natural that the vikings would take the highest place on the food chain. From beginning until "end" of the viking era, it was always the adaptability of the vikings (scandinavian people) that kept them on top, and when the time came for change, they simply adapted a new way. Simply saying they vanished is a load of crap, they just centered around trade instead.

  • vikings rule

  • hellz yeah vikings pwns

  • what all historians do is make the viking age to something seperated from all ells. the viking age wast just an exstention of the tribal moving time that started in europe around 300 after christ. the big change was in the ships but otherwise it was prettymuch the same culture and people that went abrode for plunder and wealth

  • But no other tribe were all the way between Vinland(America ) to east in Russia.

And from Europe to Africa and to the black sea.

  • dont get me wrong...im very impressed by the vikings

  • DEATH BY THE SWORDDD !!!!

  • Btw, GJ KILLING THE CHRISTIANS. <3

  • Guys. How can Denmark own Norway and Sweden? I mean, Norway has a smaller population true, but Sweden is like TWICE as populated!

And lolz. No way Danes could beat us.

And lol, the Norwegians raided the most, and were the first to raid as well.

Also, we had the last Viking king, as well as the most feared viking king.

WE're the smallest of the scandinavian countries, please b nice 2 us >_>

  • "WE're the smallest of the scandinavian countries, please b nice 2 us >_> "

Haha, most of us swedes have nothing against norweigans. You did nothing bad against us, so we don't really hold a grudge against you at all. On the contrary, you have a very developed country and you're even richer than us...

  • Well it seems like you do O_o. Like this Swede i was arguing with saying Norway sucked balls etc, turns out he'd never been in Norway :3

  • Haha, you really shoulden't listen to him ;) There are arseholes here, I can admit that, but most of us have nothing against you.

  • I know, 4 of my best friends are Swedish ^,^

  • Haha, good for you :)

  • VALHALLA awaits

  • stupid american. they make the vikings seem so cruel and they compare my ancestors to fucking terrorists! they were genius thats what they were. more advanced then most in europe at the time.

  • i totally agree with u, only cuz christian was a target they are barbarian and stuff!

Im proud that i once had ancestors who was Viking known for their trade, settlers and stuff!

  • 1:07 --> check the sheep on the right hand corner running for his life!!!!

  • ICELAND!

  • Danes have always been linked together with vikings, thats for a reason! :)

  • LOL thanks for pointing that out.

  • typical danish, , the danes were the rich people and forced norway and sweden and the rest of scandinavia to do the dirty work for you.... the norweigans and swedish were more viking!

  • Hahaha you say the Danes forced the other countries to do their dirty work...and you say that the Norwegians and Swedes were more vikings?! Well if a small country like Denmark was capable of forcing much bigger countries to do things for them...they must have been better vikings! ;o) We were all vikings man...Norway discovered America and we (Denmark) ruled England... don't hate on Denmark, we are all brothers and sisters...one huge Scandinavian family :o)

  • haha what? If Danes were rich, it were because they raided most. More anglo-saxon coins from the first millenium are found in Denmark than in England it self. Not to mention sieged Paris, London etc. The largest long ships found in Denmark to.

What is your suppose here as American, coming and talk shit about Denmark? You apparently know nothing about Scandinavian history. And probably you has never owned a passport.

  • yea that is weird but 1 thing thats also weird is that Finland is marked whit Red when thiere where no vikings in finland at all

  • @123DKDK

It isn't "Americans"; it's stupid people. Stupidity is everywhere, as you prove with that statement.

  • I think they are trying to make them look bad and evil

Im an american and i hate my history, it is really boring

  • @123DKDK | americans see the rest of the world as a fairytale otherplace and believe it to be the way they want to see it..

  • im proud couse i am swedish;) a real viking

  • I'm Danish.. As much a real viking as you.. If only Scandinavia could rule the whole world again!

  • you are so right!

  • @123DKDK You're not according to this documentary^^

  • I am from sweden

  • @123DKDK Couldnt happen youre too much of a pussy.

  • This makes me proud that my ancestors came from scandinavia! In a town not far from my home in minnesota a farmer found a runestone in the late 1800's and it claimed that vikings camped in the area after leaving newfoundland

  • wow

  • I know that same feeling. I have kept a viking sword in my hand while i was visiting local "museum". It was founded from some ancient grave. Looking exatly the same in this video, just little rusty. And that sword was still pretty heavy! Vikings had to be very strong.

  • @Mortskcab

That's funny you mention that because in Indiana they were thought to have passed through as well. The Miami Indians got along with them and supposedly taught them how to make arrowhead arrows and the vikings taught them how to make axes which it made it easier for them to carry it around in heavily wooded areas.

  • @Mortskcab I know about that stone, i also know that all scandinavian scholars have declared it a fake;)

  • i am from stocholm

  • really? can you advise me some search words to look for? or direct urls.
