Uhhh, Greenland was settled by Indians before the Icelanders settles there (NOT Norwegians - idiots). And settling is not colonization. There was no King or crown in Iceland and Erik the red was bound as an outlaw by common law of the people; so technically he ran to Greenland...Just as many of the Icelanders 'ran' from Harald of Norway's tyranny (the very reason they saw no need for a King in Iceland).
@BattleHideout Haha. The viking from norway did not even raid. They most likely explored a lot, such as Iceland and greenland. The real warriors came from Denmark and Sweden. Denmark went to the west, and Sweden went to east, and Norway went north. You do know that denmark ruled england during the viking age?
@BattleHideout It is a fact? Are saying that danish vikings did not raid? How would you explain Danelaw in England, how would explain the fact that Denmark ruled England for 30 years? How would you explain the huge amount of vikingships thats has been found in Denmark? Denmark is the country where there as been found most evidence from the viking age. Read about history dude ;)
@Ralleq1 Vikings from Norway did not raid? Five of the most famous cities of Ireland were raided, then founded by Norwegian vikings, including Dublin and Limerick. Ask any Irish historian; He might have something to say about that. Or the Scots. Read some Sagas my friend. Besides, when you say 'Viking' you are saying 'raider' or 'raiding' as a verb. Otherwise, just say Norwegian.
Romans civilized the world, twice. Romans had conquered so much territory that they couldn't protect it all at once. So yeah, not much merit for the Vikings.
@DaPalleKuling The Roman's weren't gay, the Greeks were POSSIBLY involved in homosexual activites, but the majority of the Roman population were not homosexual, even if they were, so what? That doesn't mean they weren't great soldiers, I would rather fight a heterosexual modern-day man, than a ravingly homosexual Roman or Greek soldier, because I'd get my arse beat (pun intended) by the Romans/Greeks.
Just because someone is homosexual doesn't mean they're wimps. I would be terrified to fight a gay Roman gladiator. He might beat me half to death and then fuck me. That sounds VERY unpleasant.
I suspect that the percentage of 'Raiders' the came from the Norse societies of this time was actually quite small. Every society has it's share of high-strung young men determined to prove themselves in combat.. and in the case of the Norse, it is the reputation of those few that stamp our collective memories with their exploits..
@VelikyUstyug1 Actually it was quite the opposite, the nordic vikings were big men, big and strong. Because of their eating habbits (often fiested and ate ALOT) and theyre hard work made them very big and muscular
@MistahAwesome Dear Mistah, you may well be right- although I don't think that muscles and nutrients make for a raider. To be a 'raider' is a mindset... just as some of the biggest toughest bullies are very small men.
lol the norwegians had the most colourfull?? sure if we say in discorvery and Long travel.. none of them outshine any.. the norwegians shined in their travel and discovery's the danes shined in the Conquering land the Swedes shined in getting far into russia and even reaching down to Constantinople all 3 great in their own ways
the axe was the most lethal not due to its throw ability but Penetration when its punched.. and axe has a much more penetration quality to armor and chailmail even a shield than a sword has
The vikings did not terrorize Christians. Most of them were christians themselves.
And like the mongols and huns, being feared as inhumane monsters makes raids so much easier. When people surrender and hand over their riches without trying to fight, it's much easier work. And in asia these hordes spread rediculously overblown stories about their killings, so I wouldn't give too much about the stories about vikings either.
dougiewhite778 Berserkers were no viking tribe. They were a typ of warriors from viking society who enbodied the fury of a raging bear. They would before each battle work themeselfs into a state of rage that they didnt feal pain. Only a killing wound could stop a beserker. There was allsow another branch of beserkers known as ulfsarks who embodied the cold fury of a wolf. I'm myself from sweden so I know this.
ive heard that a viking tribe called the "bezerkers" that arrived in eastern england all took magic mushrooms before they charged on to a village. Thats how this word got into english language. Anyone know if this is true?
Much of the Viking age was spent in raids and campaigns against the Saxons and the Franks, formidable warrior peoples with their own history of savagery and terror. (Charlemagne, a Christian, beheaded 5,000 Saxons in one day.) Incidentally, why all the shots at Cecilia Holland, a brilliant historical novelist?
Yes, knowledge is a good thing. Unfortunately Cecelia Holland is clueless, and makes so many false statements here that it's clear that she's not a professional historian. How do I know? My MA in history. No professional Historian would say the things she is saying; inflammatory, antagonistic rhetoric. Shame on History Channel for buying this garbage and not checking it before showing it.
@manc84 I am pure blood Norse, last name Jorgenson, written family history back to the fifteen hundreds. Im as proud of my history as anyone of Norse heritage. But true Christianity is about peace and love. Killing people who follow these principals is nothing to smile about. Unless killing innocents gives you wood or something.
@sonofmanchu Interesting point. The more I read the more I wonder if anything but internal strife in the Mongol empire could have stopped the Mongol armies from marching to the Bay of Biscay.
yeah :P being adapted to the climate of scandinavia and the way of living, it was only natural that the vikings would take the highest place on the food chain. From beginning until "end" of the viking era, it was always the adaptability of the vikings (scandinavian people) that kept them on top, and when the time came for change, they simply adapted a new way. Simply saying they vanished is a load of crap, they just centered around trade instead.
what all historians do is make the viking age to something seperated from all ells. the viking age wast just an exstention of the tribal moving time that started in europe around 300 after christ. the big change was in the ships but otherwise it was prettymuch the same culture and people that went abrode for plunder and wealth
Jammen, Nå er det jo de Norske vikingene som oppnådde noe. Vi inntok alle øyene i Atlantern, plyndret england, og inntok Frankrike. Hva gjor svenskene... Dere gikk mot øst europa = kjedelig! xD

Well if a small country like Denmark was capable of forcing much bigger countries to do things for them...they must have been better vikings! ;o) We were all vikings man...Norway discovered America and we (Denmark) ruled England... don't hate on Denmark, we are all brothers and sisters...one huge Scandinavian family :o)
haha what? If Danes were rich, it were because they raided most. More anglo-saxon coins from the first millenium are found in Denmark than in England it self. Not to mention sieged Paris, London etc. The largest long ships found in Denmark to.
What is your suppose here as American, coming and talk shit about Denmark? You apparently know nothing about Scandinavian history. And probably you has never owned a passport.
This makes me proud that my ancestors came from scandinavia! In a town not far from my home in minnesota a farmer found a runestone in the late 1800's and it claimed that vikings camped in the area after leaving newfoundland
I know that same feeling. I have kept a viking sword in my hand while i was visiting local "museum". It was founded from some ancient grave. Looking exatly the same in this video, just little rusty. And that sword was still pretty heavy! Vikings had to be very strong.
That's funny you mention that because in Indiana they were thought to have passed through as well. The Miami Indians got along with them and supposedly taught them how to make arrowhead arrows and the vikings taught them how to make axes which it made it easier for them to carry it around in heavily wooded areas.
Uhhh, Greenland was settled by Indians before the Icelanders settles there (NOT Norwegians - idiots). And settling is not colonization.
