  • I've been listening to MS amma since childhood, never liked her voice.Did not listen to her again until recently .When I listened to bhavayami gopalabalam for the first time, after several years,I was shocked, listened atleast a hundred times, did not understand what's wrong with me,finally pinched myself and cried.I finally understood that MS amma tied me up with her love.Like a mother disciplines her baby, she tied me with her lovely bond and changed my atheist ways,I love you, amma :))

  • I understand why Mahatma wanted only her to sing this song, she brings you to tears, fills the soul with amritham and makes you feel like you don't want anything else. One divine soul could identify another divine soul.

  • Soulful music! In a Boston Concert 1977, Sri Sadasivam announced that Mahatma Gandhi wanted to hear this song 'spoken' by MS than sung by anyone else! And MS learnt it, set to music , sung, recorded, all between 8 pm and 2 am and flown next morning for the Mahatma to hear it in the evening on his birthday Oct 2 1947. Meera, Mahatma, MS - what a magnificent triumvirate associated with this bhajan

  • waw!

  • Saakahaat Saraswati singing praises of Lord Vishnu for Gandhiji --- lucky was MKG!

  • U r stupid! They are sorting out facts..

  • @cricketlover1117

I agree. Music has no boundaries, no language - music will go instantly to your heart & soul. Let us not demean such sublime and divine music - in fact it is an intense prayer, look at Amma's face, she is one with God.

  • Awesome!!

  • No one like Subbulakshmi amma, when it comes to devotional music. Besides this, I request the moderator to remove hindi vs tamil comments. Subbulakshmi amma belonged to entire India, as against any particular region or language. As a hindi speaker, I am blessed to hear her melodies no matter whichever language they may be, sanskrit, tamil or hindi.

    Jai Shree Hari !!!

  • This is just to clarify and not to find fault with any Language. There are no ga. ja,da,ba in Tamil . They use ka, cha,ta,pa for even for above letters. There are no half letters in Tamil . They have a special letter which no other Language has it . That is the reason why this Confusion has arisen. However as far as M.S Pronounciation is concerned She is Perfect . Sanskrit Scholars in Tamil Nadu do not find Prounouncian of any Sanskrit Word Difficult .

  • the reason Tamils sometimes spell words inconsistently is because their language is spoken different than it is written. Two different forms. Tamil is one of the few surviving classical languages.

  • She is definitely my favourite when it comes to Indian vocal music. Thanks for uploading!

  • thank u very much Mr. 2020abcd for posting the lyrics with meaning

  • fine! can anybody post the lyrics and meaning please???

  • hari tum haro jana ki bhir

O Hari, you can get rid of all the problems of the world

Draupadi ki laaj rakhi, tum badhayo cheer

You protected the chastity of draupadi by extending her saree

Bhagata kaaran roop narahari, dharyo aap sharir

For the sake of the devotee you took the human form

Hiranyakashyapa maar linho, dharyo nahina dheer

You killed Hiranyakasya without any delay

Budhatay gajaraj rakhyo, kiyo bahar neer

You saved the drowning elephant by taking him out of water

  • Dasa Meera Lal Giridhar, dukha jaha taha peer

Meera is the servant and Girdhar is the prince, where there is sorrow, there is your hope

  • Gandhiji heard MS sing some bhajans and wanted this song sung by her...

As she did not know the song she hesitated and some one else would sing..

For which gandhiji said "i would hear it spoken by mss than sung by others"

she immediately learnt and recorded it and sent to him...

The very song followed after the announcement of gandhiji's death in the radio.

such a great veteran she is.!!!!!!!!!

  • we are alredy doing enough wth the hindu musli conservative progressive na dall that jazz, stop dividing the country in north and south.if you cant appreciate the legend of ms subbulaxmi then you are not even human forget abt north or south

  • Duh, but it is still better than 90% of the Shudha Hindi renditions there are.

  • Its not even Hindi she is singing btw

    It is Gujarati

and She has a very good sense of pronunciation. Its just the song has been composed with a slight Carnatic style which gives that impression.

  • You are talking non sense. Talking about sanskrit I challenge you to recite suprabadam or any of the Sanskrit slokas she sings. Before singing in public she has the best teachers to learn the lyrics perfectly. Do you know Tamil? To say that she sounds like tamil.

  • No...no..no.... Suprabadam, it is 'Suprabatam' as no 'badam' involved in it, however 'badam' usually added in Prasadam, for taste!

Tamil , I don't know, but I know typical Tamil accent thru Hindi Movies. :P :))

  • Well Tamil may not be a language that you might not like. Hindi is not a perfect language either because the pronunciations are not all that great either. Furthermore, sanskrit is best soken in tamil nadu and not by hindi's. You people cant even keep your temples clean. Look at Vrndava, what a dumping ground. Mathura is like a mack of a lorry. But look at Sri Rangam and all other south Indian places. First keep your back yard clean then talk about others. 5kallu, you're a lame ass.

  • Ok, Tamilised Gujarathi.

What I mean to say is she is pronunciation is like Tamil. As such Tamil with limited set of alphabets, is difficult to write correct pronunciation of Sanscrit based languages.

MSS has been authority in carnatic classical, no doubt in it.

Idiots who rated the comment as 'poor' are not artists, but cult who blindly follow the 'brand' WITHOUT LISTENING & ENJOYING, (like vyssin)

  • @kadhambari

i think its rajasthani n nt gujrati!

  • She still is the best carnatic singer and better singer than any north indian. Get with the program and get lost!

  • This particular bhajan was learnt by amma & recorded for Gandhiji in about 2 hrs time, starting at 12 am !! This record was played after the announcement of Mahatmas assasination, thereby amma cudnt sing it for the next 15- 16 yrs .. She then popularized it at the UN General Assembly, since then it became a hallmark of her concerts !! We stand nowhere to even speak of her name , n u with great shame comment on her diction ?? !!! U need another 1000 lives to wash away the sin u hv committed !

  • @5kallu

u idiot, can u ur self speak hindi tht gud tht u can criticise others n tht also amma!

if u can then post some text in hindi read by u n v will comment!

  • Yes, there should be only ONE question in our live: "How am I pleasing my LORD today?"

  • I hope my friend will not mind if I just correct three words in the text. In line 2,it should be Draupadi ki..tum badhaayo Cheer(Cheer means Vastra or clothing,it's a reference to Draupadi's Cheer Haran by Dhushshasan).Line 4 it should be Harinkashyap maar leenho dharyo naahin dheer ( You killed Harinkashyap without waiting, you lost your patience).Line6 it should be das Meera lal girdhar dukh jahan tahan pir( das meera says that Girdhar Lal, is present whereever there is sorrow and pain!).

  • Hari is the Parabrahman ! No doubts

  • No! Shiva is Parabrahman, crystal clear!

  • @5kallu

i think u like to speak contrary to others .

in sri mad bhagwat it is said tht hari is parabrahman in skanda puran shiv in devi bhagwat devi,in ganesh puran ganapati!

b4 speaking something opposite to others b urself 100% correct !

1 thing remains , it is said tht the person who doesnt give same value to hari and har is sent to hell and badly punished !!!!!

    so the choice is urs!!!!!!!!!!

  • OMG.....what a divine voice....We should be proud Indians to have vocalist like MS Subbalakshi....

  • The greatness of MS is that she really sings to her Divine within, oblivious of the outside world. She triumphs in her absorption into the "bhava" of the song, casting as if a spell on those who hear her. In today's bankruptcy of music, she will stand as an unattainable peak of perfection for a very long time to come. Made my day!!!

  • She is one singer who you want to watch while she sings. Such unison of a singer with music and bhakthi is impossible to find. Meera personified.

  • Great voice. This is like an arrow went through my heart.

I wish I understand this soung. Sung in Tamil?

    T

  • Itis sung in Hindi... it was the favorite songs of our freedom fighter Gnadhi...

  • what a divine voice...

  • Nalla sonninge,,, enakkum same feelingaa,,, life le avvalavu periya Carnatic Singer paartha mudiyaadhae,,,

  • lovely ma

  • This song has a history behing it! This was the Bhajan that Gandhi wanted to hear sung by Subbulakshmi. The message was sent to the great singer . However she politely declined saying that she had not learnt this Meera Bhajan and the Mahatma could request some other singer to sing the same. It is then that the Mahatma made the unforgetable comment " I'd rather hear the song spoken by Subbulakshmi than anyone else sing".

  • Thank you, thank you so much. I heard this in a recording thirty years ago and was so stunned, and thought I would never find this vocalist again. Now I get to experience it again.

  • Excellence, touching, divine, bhakti-bhaav!

  • Gandhi's favourite bhajan that one

  • can anyone tell me if the song 'poo malai vangi vanthan' from the tamil movie is based on this raga? It seems like it is..

  • Can anybody give a short English translation? Please!

  • Hari is Vishnu, The Protector in Hinduism.

Line 1 - Hari Tum Haro Jan ki Bhir - Hari, please remove the suffering of the people (jan - people, bhir - suffering, haro - please remove)

Line 2 - draupadi ki lAj rAkhyo tum badhAyo dhir - You preserved (rAkhyO) Draupadi's (refer to the Hindu Epic Mahabharat for details) honor (lAj) and thereby increased(badhAyO) your(tum) glory(dhir).

  • Line 3 - bhkat kAran roop narahari dharyO Ap sharir

Based on your devotees (bhakat) request (kAran - also reason), you(Ap) took(dharyO) on the form(roop) of a human (nara).

Line 4 - Harinakashyapa mAra leenhO dharyO nAdina dhir

To kill the demon Hiranyakashyap, you took on the form of a beast.

Line 5 - bhoodathe gaja rAja rAkhyO liyO bAhar neer

You dragged the elephant king out of the water and saved him from the crocodile's jaws.

  • Line 6 - dAsa meera lal giridhar dukh jahAn tahAn thir

Your servant (dAsa) Meera (the saint and composer) is always with you and finds no sorrow when I'm with you.

Disclaimer: Though I know Hindi quite well, this dialect is very different and is spoken only in the state of Rajasthan and parts of Gujarat. So please forgive any inadvertent mistakes. My wish is that more people appreciate the meaning and the beauty of the lyrics, not to mislead them.

  • Thanks very much for this service. A small request though. Could you please change your interpretation of Hari to simply (Lord) than Vishnu.... Here the Hari means the ultimate lord who is no different from shiva/vishnu/brhma trinity who is the universal protector. This is my humble understanding after reading the works of shankara bagavadpada

  • Your point is well taken. I completely agree with you that Hari is the Lord or Brahman in the larger spiritual sense. However, this is a Meera Bhajan and she was completely devoted to Lord Krishna. Mythologically speaking, Lord Krishna was an avatar of Lord Vishnu. The events described in the song are also stories during each incarnation of Lord Vishnu on this earth OR in the case of the elephant, Lord Vishnu himself. So I do believe that in the context of this song, Hari refers to Lord Vishnu.

  • Thanks for your reply. However I should disagree. Lord Krishna avatar is considered as amala avatar (complete). The imperceivable lord comes as krishna as perceivable entity. It is his lila. The Lord Vishnu is the very brhman itself (Sagun). Bagavatam's main point is the above concept. Lord Vishnu of Ramanuja's school, Krishna of Madhwa's, Shiva of Saiva Siddantha, Brhman of Shankara's are literally one and the same. This my understanding. It is upto you to consider my request .

  • When I was contemplating what else i could add to convince you directly then I got this incident in Meerabai ji's life. When she was in Vrindavan she wanted to meet another Krishna devotee Jeeva Gosvami who happened to take a vow not to meet any women. To that meerabai commented back is there any other "Adi Purusha" other than Krishna indicating that we are part and parcel of prakriti (symbolizes the female energy). Later that sadhu ran towards her. "Hari" here is the "Adi Brahman". - 2 ct.

  • One more thing. I see where your confusion comes from. There is a difference between "thava" and "purana". Many times we stick to puranas without understanding Tatva. Krishna the ultimate lord is performing "pass times" in this world called "lila" and it is that tatva. Pragmatic Puranas helps to understand the initial stages. I guess you are a Chicago based Singer. You have great source of knowledge such as Vedanta society of Chicago. Swami Chidananda is there. He will agree with my views.

  • What a beautiful line! That is the essence of the Krishna avataara, isn't it? That all the gopis and their devotion represented the female with Krishna aka Vishnu as the only Purusha.

  • The translation that you have provided is quite good. Still I would like to suggest some alterations.

In line 1: The last word is 'pir' which means pain or suffering, though here it is pronounced as bhir.

In line 2: The last word is 'chir' which means cloth. Krishna kept on increasing the length of Draupadi's sari until Dushasan was exhausted and gave up.

    I hope this is helpful.

  • thanks. it is a great help
