Sterling Marlin is the man. I've met him many times.. dude was nothing but a good guy.. and awesome to his fans. I hope he gets a full season ride before he's retired
It's always a good sight when a Dodge is in Victory Lane! I loved it a week ago too when Kurt dominated and won; he is poised to be Dodge's top dog this season.
As for Ganassi, he screwed up and BIG TIME! As early as 2005, he had a really solid driver lineup in Marlin (40), Mears (41), and McMurray (42). Two years later, all three drivers were gone in favor of Juan Pablo Montoya, Reed Sorenson and Dario Franchitti. Ganassi was never the same (even if JPM did win one race).
JPM and Sterling Marlin are Ganassi's best drivers IMO. Would have been great if they were ever teammates too, if Chip didn't fire Sterling with Montoya coming in 07' to the 42.
If he hadn't crashed at Richmond and say, finished 15th...he would have had a 130 point lead on 2nd place. Remember, 4 of the last 7 races had quailfying rained out, so Sterling would have started on the pole and most likely finished like he did in 2001. Championship people :(
@goldenjimbo007: Yeah, he finished 43rd at Richmond because of that crash, got slightly injured, then crashed at Kansas, finished 33rd and got severely injured and got replaced by Jamie McMurray...
Had those 2 accidents not happened, with the issues that Jeff Gordon & Mark Martin had, he could win the title!!!
Sterling Marlin is just as good a driver as Harry Gant was. Marlin would've had a lot more wins and a championship if he had decent equipment for most of his career like Mark Martin did. But it seems like Marlin was always in junk. The best cars he had was with Morgan McClure for a couple of years (Kodak #4) and Ganassi in '01 and '02.
If Ganassi hadn't screwed up by adding a third team to the stable in '03, Marlin probably would have still been a contender.
Sterling woulda won the cup I believe...after Kansas it was Talladega a track he has won at, LMS won last year and McMurry won there with his car...I believe he would have won and it was so heart breaking indeed when he said he was done...I nearly cryed..been a Marlin fan since 92 when I was 8 years old.
sterling marlin wouldnt have won the championship he was 4th in points when he wrecked at kansas the wreck at richmond a few weeks earlier took him out of the points lead
it was a heartbreaking season for marlin fans, that's for sure. at least he could say he was in contention to be a champion, unlike what he is now, an also-ran.
isn't this the guy that killed Dale
krgrubbs 7 months ago
@krgrubbs He did not kill Dale. Dale died blocking people behind him. It was a racing accident.

Are you implying Montoya isn't a good driver?
Montoya42Fan 2 years ago
I think Montoya is a great driver; in fact if it weren't for him Ganassi (or EGR I should say) would be totally irrelevant right now.
I was just saying that the team was never the same after 2005.
