Talk about pretending to celebrate the Gershwin's by releasing versions in your own image or style in order to remain relevant. I also believe that Wilson does not belong in the same category as the Beatles at all!!!! Sorry, that Californian thing just didn't resonate with the rest of the country as the Beatles did and still do today.
@HonestBrokerBoston yes but if you study music theory and composition you will realize that Brian Wilson reached levels of genius that not even Lennon/McCartney did
@popomczowzow theory shmeory. Such an elitest thing to say. It doesn't matter to the everyday listener and it is very well documented that Wilson was obsessed with outdoing the beatles. what really matters is how the music touches the listener emotionally. the beach boys could never reach level period.
@popomczowzow Obviously, and that's fine. But if you look at an entire body of work, the beatles were able to morph into another version of themselves with each album and their ability to evolve was far more sophisticated than the beach boys in terms of mystery and wonderment without overuse of the studio.
@HonestBrokerBoston Brian Wilson was growing, the Beach Boys held him back. The beatles and the BB were friendly rivals. Rubber Soul begat Pet Sounds, which begat Sgt. Pepper. Are you saying that album was not "overuse of the studio" and what does that mean anyway?
@Mozart1220 The Beatles were also not schitzophrenic to start with, (which Wilson may have been) and besides, you can't say drugs didn't hurt John Lennon, who basicly gave up unless forced by Paul to work. John didn't do much after about 1967. His solo work certainly was not up to his previous standards. Plus, The Beatles had george Martin. Wilson was pretty much alone as songwriter, arranger and producer. I LOVE the Beatles, but I consider Wilson at least an equal.
@Mozart1220 The Beatles usage of drugs didn't damage their careers, lives and famlies. That's the point. Wilson burned himself out on drugs. Thankfully, today, he's sort of back to normal, but his musical genius is long since gone.
Available August 17.......WHEN?????? WHAT YEAR?????? Am I the only one who doesn't know if this is still a promo or one posted during the first coming?
What a fantastic album and what a brilliant idea to have Brian do it.God only knows what else he has to offer the world of music...and he produces MUSIC..thanks Brian.
If there is a special room in Heaven for musicians then George and Ira Gershwin are inside getting off on this album. Brian Wilson did them proud by keeping the songs fresh and as if they could had been penned today. No one could have done what Brian Wilson did with these songs. It was pure genius interpreting pure geniuses. And kingofallwhites I totally agree with you. Anyone who dislikes this album truly deserves to be labeled a dipshit. This has Grammy written all over it.
New Wilson! I'm lost in the harmony an completely blown away by this album. "I Got Rythm" sounds so Beach Boys. It borrows heavily from "Farmer's Daughter"; an underated BW tune if there ever was one (and there are many). Fleetwood Mac got laughed at for doing a cover of that tune in the 70's. Nobody's laughing now. All hail Brian, King of Harmony!
I've heard rumblings that Brian "Beach Boyed" Gershwin's songs.
I've replied to the naysayers- He didn't "Beach Boy" anything! He re-imagined the songs in his own style. I find nothing wrong with that after listening to the album. It's great!
Think of it is as if George Gershwin was asked to revisit the songs of Stephen Foster- another incredible American composer. I know! It would have been amazing!
I have the pickiest ears known to mankind. I'm buying this for my ipod. I sampled the thirty seconds allowed for each song in the store section of itunes. Sounds damn good to me. George Gershwin wrote some great stuff. Ever check out The Happenings version of I Got Rhythm? Not shabby at all.
I bought this CD on the day of release, 8/17. In fact, I bought 2. One for me, and one for my Dad who will turn 85 in September. Brian's interpretations, of these masterpieces, are brilliant. The fact the Gershwin Family gave him access to George's 114 incomplete songs, to FINISH 2 OF THEM, speaks volume's about what they think of this project. I can only hope the Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences recognizes the importance of this work, with a Grammy for Album of the Year.
I like how Brian is paying respect to the great writers and performers who have preceded him. At this point in his life he certainly does not still retain the machine-gun writing skills that he once had but he still has a great ear for music. On his previous album his version of Frankie Laine's 'That Lucky Old Sun' is a gem. I"ll be eagerly awaiting this new music.
I can't wait to check out the cd. I love his version of "They Can't Take That Away from Me". I've always loved George and Ira Gershwin's music and songs.
Brian Wilson is great don't get me wrong, but the Gershwin's they are irreplaceable...why do artists have to revamp stuff that doesn't need to be revamped...if it ain't broke don't fix it
@JSweit8573 Respectfully disagree. I'm not a huge fan of cover albums in general, but sometimes covers are just what the title states...reimaginings. Without that we'd never have "Sloop John B," a folk song, or the Beatles' "Twist and Shout." Some songs can be covers but can also be unique in their own way. Being heavily influenced by other artists is at the root of artistic creativity and in that way, BW is paying homage to the Gershwins.
No-one is in any doubt about Brian Wilson's skill and ability to interpretate songs in his own musical style. His success with the Beach Boys is unparalleled. My father played Gershwin's music on piano when I was a young boy in the 1960s and I can only say that George and Ira wrote some of the finest music we'll ever see. Wilson's interpretation has a 'Beach Boys' flavour which for some, not all, may not seem appropriate for such music. However, I do wish him every success with the album.
This is easily going to be one of the greatest records ever made. That sample of They Can't Take That Away From Me is infectious and I cannot wait to hear the whole song, or album for that matter. If this album does not win at least one Grammy then the Grammys are a joke because I can guarantee that nothing else released this year will even come close to touching this. Brian is and forever will be the man.
Brian's band is simply staggering. Their live performances sound studio-perfect. I can't wait for this to hit my mailbox and hope, hope, hope that this is the catalyst for a major tour.
Why's that? I'm interested in your answer. I'm a composer and songwriter right now in college, and Brian's music has really torn my head off.
