  • This scene didn't happen in the book. In the book, the Witch-King came out of the gate when it was broken down, not the armored trolls, you do have this speech here, but before they actually clash, the horns of Rohan sound and the Witch-King turns around. I wonder if Gandalf's staff breaking is Jackson's way of interpretting Gandalf's line in Two Towers that, although he's stronger as the White, Black was still stronger.

  • @Defidius What I also dont understand is that his staff is broken here but when he leaves the Grey Havens he has his staff again.. how did he regain this staff again? Just wondering ... (referring to the movie and not the book..)

  • why is it that the witch king is about to kill gandalf, or appears to be, then suddenly 'o noes! humans in the background have done something! i gtg!' and he just skedaddles. not only because it is not in the book, i think its a good thing this was left out.

  • witchking kicks ass!!!!!!

  • Nada que sale en español!!!

  • 1:02 imagine he says... I AM YOUR FATHER

  • it's angmar,lol

  • this never happened in the book..............

  • @Hamgammy still woulda been a good fight.

  • I guess that he would have defeated Gandalf yes, cuz Gandalf is on his human form. But when is his angelical form, Gandalf could kick Saurons ass.

  • This scene is a travesty! Olorin of the Miar, vassal of Manwe, in many ways a lesser god of Ea, could never be so easily vanquished by the witch king, a perverted human wraith, even if he possessed some of Sauron's might. The doubt, fear, and despair evident in the film version of Gandalf's character is ridiculous. Gandalf the white is unshakable and steadfast. The Witch king has dominion over the will of man, not over wizards. Gandalf defeated a Balrog of Morgoth even before he became white.

  • @ryanedwardhache Yeah and I believe that thats the reason why this scene was taken out fortunately :D

  • @ryanedwardhache Why do you think it's a deleted scene? Also, Gandalf has his staff again directly after this scene, so yeah. It's clear why they cut it.

  • @VirtualTechno he have not his staff anymore after this fight.

  • Svara på det här videoklippet... and why witch king is more powerfull is cuz when he have more orcs and things from the darkness he becomes stronger.

  • @ryanedwardhache Oh come on! The WK should've won anyway had they ever actually clashed in the book, as it would've just made the story more exciting. I don't understand why some people prefer the book version over this, PJ's version is a much more modern and brutal one, and he excels at adding a lot of needed extra tension in places where there was none in the books. It shouldn't be a crime to modify one short passage from the book, as long as it's for the better, and in this case it was!

  • @bellator11 i don't think the witch king could have killed gandalf if they had confronted in the book, but if he were to try in this scene they'd have no choice but to kill off gandalf simply because he looks so beaten here.

  • @ryanedwardhache Hence why this scene was removed from the final cut of the film.

  • @ryanedwardhache You clearly haven't thought that rage through, when gandalf was sent back by Eru, he lost his wooden staff while fighting durins bane. in the process he got a new staff. during the encounter with the witch king, agmar knew of gandalf's staff and somehow knew the activation words for that staff, hence breaking it and leaving gandalf vulnerable for a split minute =D, hope this helps

  • @ryanedwardhache Oh, fuck off.

  • @ryanedwardhache Wow. You are one gigantic LOTR nerd.

  • Still the gay wizard of Hogwarts owns them all.

  • @CyclopsPL Gandalf vs Dumbledore would be the best fight ever to be known to man. I think Gandalf would own him though.

  • @Dubsteppin2DnB

check out "Epic Rap Battles of History 11".

  • @homersparents oh, ok, thanks for clearing that up, so its not because she is a woman, its because she is an individual?

  • @darnunt well if by man they meant human race then how did eoywyn (excuse spelling) kill him? because she was a human? but she said "I am no man, I am a woman" i dont mean to start an argument, im just curious of the answer!

  • @Theupturnedturtle

in English "Man" means lots of things. A group of soldiers no matter there sex are often referred to as MEN" these are my men blah blah blah" and also a group of fictional beings like aliens could be called men though they are apparently not men. Man can mean the group or the individual or the sex title.

it is therefor a play on words. no MAN can kill me. I am NO MAN.

  • Witch king has ADD

  • Arguments over an entertaining fiction like LOTR or the bible of any major and/or minor religion is pointless. I'll just say I enjoyed the films as much as I enjoyed the literature.

  • I have an idea: why dont we ask tolkien who would have won..... what? he's dead?... oh... guess we'll never know...

  • *Angmar

  • I think those movies are made free of sensacionalist 'classic' fights, well done PJ.

  • Saruman was the equivalent of Gandalf, sort of, and he got owned by Grima, apparently the best way to kill a maia is by stabbing...

  • @wedingo better than Gandalf the Grey, less powerful than Gandalf the White

  • thumbs up if you are wondering why the witch king took off

  • can any one translate what the witch kings is saying when he pulls his sword out please an thankyou :)

  • @whichking he said

    "This is my hour"

  • @94ltk cheers lad nice one, is that all he/it says? or does he go off into some random language?! presuming thats a spell?

  • Oh The witch king is soo stupid XD He didnt fight!! He is frightend!

  • Uhm, Gandalf is one of the Ainur (immortal spirits), Witch-King is a man.. Gandalf wins.

  • @ifidiebeforeiwake909 Witch-King isnt a man! Nazguls WERE men before (not sure is all of them), but Sauron took them and made them his servants, they are shadows, immortal too unless the One Ring is destroyed. And I'm not really sure who would win, Gandalf the White or Witch-King of Angmar.

  • @InfernumThe It would be a pretty even match for a while, but in the end I feel that the Witch-King would win. Gandalf the White cannot be harmed by weapons made by mortal men, but the Witch-King is not a mortal man. The Witch-King cannot be harmed by any man, and Gandalf is a man.

  • @avatartbk Maybe you FEEL that he would win. I know now that Gandalf would win. This part of the movie is not very realistic, it was different in the book. And Gandalf isn't a man, he's a maia, he has one of the Elven Rings, Narya. He was before world was made, I hope you already know that, and he came to Arda to help the battle against Sauron. And Sauron is a maia too. Even Balrogs are maiar! WK is just a servant of maia (Sauron).

  • @InfernumThe And yet you're still wrong. Gandalf was a maia given the form of a man, so yes he was a man.

  • @avatartbk But he's still a maia, just a FORM of a man

  • @ifidiebeforeiwake909 Gandalf can still be defeated. He does not have access to all of his powers when he is on Middle-Earth. If he had access to all of his powers,h e wouldn't have been so worried about the Balrog. He became more powerful after he became Gandalf the White, but the Witch-King is still equal in power. It's a pretty even match.

  • Shadowmere's like "fuck this shit..."

  • The confrontation in the book would have been much better!

Witch King: "This is MY hour!"

*destroys gate, finds Gandalf standing there*

    Gandalf: "Uh-huh. Sure."

  • points are:

    1. gandalf is a Maiar immortal physical incarnate

    2. gandalf killed a balrog

    gg no re

  • gandalf is weak! Angmar has true power! To the knees before Witch King!

  • Witch-kings a bad ass.

  • fucken A dude now that was epic!!!!!

  • witch-king is fucking epic, but this is really unnecessery and it's good that it isn't int he movie, they should have made a scene like this but witht he two of them equal

  • Witch-King of Angmar = Easily Distracted

  • they should have also cut the scene where this guy promises to handle gandalf. now it makes no sense.

  • @iwantcoolname

Yep, I thought the same thing. I have to watch all the extended versions now to see this stuff.

  • gandalf use your magnetic powers!!!! hahaha

  • dam it witch king wouldnt come close to even touching gandalf, there's the level of hierarchy. witch king is way below gandalf. =[

  • Whoa wait, i saw Gandalf's staff break but he has it later on doesn't he..,?

  • @Never1924 he actually doesn't..he only has a sword when they fight at mordor

  • DO YOU NOT KNOW DEATH WHEN YOU SEE IT OLD MAN????

  • At 1:05 the music just stopped HAHAHAAHA!!!!

  • So, Why the Witch King leave?

  • @Cheewiez Because the Roman army appeared.

  • id b rooting for gandalf just becouse hes awsomer =)

  • In the movie it shown that the Witch King has more power, but in the Book Gandalf is shown to have equal or more power than the Witch King. So it's all about how it's portrayed.

  • I never got this really gandalf is a maiar, while the witch king is only a very corrupted man, well maybe it's because gandalf isn't allowed to use his full powers because man could not comprehend them.

  • "Gandalf is more powerful, looks cooler and has a bigger cock than the Witch King!" "No! Witch King is more powerful and has bigger cock!" "No! Gandalf's cock is bigger!" "Witch King's cock is bigger and I can prove it!" "I can prove it too!"

*whole comments section starts sucking cock*

  • @Maverick2736 -lol

  • @Maverick2736 DO you not recognize impotence when u SEE IT?! This is my powaaah!

  • And the fight takes place in the book too but you are too dumb to realize that....

  • Then gandalf's face when wk says the world of men will fall..is a face of a really scared person..gandalf felt the true power of the wk.

  • bull sh1t damn it!!! gandalf ain't powerful than wk!! anyway i'm tired of posting same comments for dumb people on every wk vs gandalf videos on youtube so i'm going to say it this way: watch and listen the video: when wk's sword caught fire then a fight between the 2 characters begun( kind of a magic fight), wk won the fight so he managed to broke gandalf's staff. He even says "YOU HAVE FAILED!

  • @killingracer Were talking about the books you retard.

  • Gandalf is more powerful than the witch king..

  • Comment removed

  • well in fact i think that Gandalf as one of Maia is more powerful than witch king-he was only a mere mighty man,the power of his ring thanx to Sauron became huge and he turned to ringwraith,so i think if they battled,it would be draw

  • The movie underpowered Gandalf in this scene

  • can the witchking take on gandalf? i mean gandalf did single-handedly defeated the balrog

  • now thats weird how many staffs does gandalf carry cause witch king destroyed it but after battle gandalf had his staff -_-

  • Okay...

1: That sounds like Darth vader only in an extra layer of robes and mask.

2: If I was the Witch-King I would've killed Gandalf first before flying the heck outta there.

  • The Witch-king was one of the most powerful beings in Middle Earth, but I doubt he would have defeated Gandalf.

  • @darnunt He wouldn't of put a dent in Gandalf. Eowyn raped the Witch King.

  • @darnunt Gandalf isn't all powerful and he's not allowed to directly interfere with the business of the Ring. He couldn't kill the Witch-King if he wanted too. Which I'm sure he did.

  • @darnunt one of the most powerfull beings you say ? I say an oliphant could own each of them, at least temporary, just by sitting on them ;) There, i pwned the debate !

  • no man can kill the wich king so gandalf would lose what so ever

  • @MrSorloth Gandalf isn't a Man, he's a Maia. By man, Tolkien meant the "human" race not the gender.

  • @MrSorloth Erm no because his a Wizard sent by the Higher powers in LOTR Lore. Gandalf is over 4000Yrs old and is now the leader of the Wizards like Saruman was supposed to.

  • @MrSorloth gandalf isnt a man. He's a Wizard. In Lord of the Rings, they are very different beings.

  • @darnunt Gandalf is an ainur, so no the Witch King wouldn't stand a chance

  • indeed witch king should appear more.

i think he is the best hero in the story however i know him just because i play middlearth lol.

  • i wish gandalfs staff did nt break :(:(

  • @kakarot557 why? it showes us how powerfull the witch king is, so the audiance knows how awesome he is, even though he's getting killed in one of the stupidest ways of the entire movie

  • @WulvPawz it happens the same way in the book though, the only difference is that they made him look scarier in the movie, he was just a hooded figure that looked like the death knights from warcraft 2 in the books, the crown was under the hood and he only takes his hood down in this part

  • EPIC

  • Gandalf got owned lol

  • Shadow fax was bout to kick some ass, he wasnt scared of the giant dragon hahaha

  • @crabulon dont forget Shadow fax also wanted to chew bubble gum, but he was out of it :(

  • I think german version of this scene is WAAAAAY better than in english and french mixed =D

  • @oly355 Its still the same fucking scene idiot...except it has donkeys talking

  • @SkInHoUnD yeah. I'am the idiot. obviously, just because I think the german scene is better than the english one. YOU obviously not, calling someone Idiot just because I said what I think. hahahaha you idiot

  • @oly355 look at the little faggot whiiiiiiine....wah wah wah

Go bitch to someone who cares fudgepacker

  • @SkInHoUnD hehe look at the loser still replying me like he's badass hahaha your insult are getting lame, so.. while you are wasting time replying me like a 13 years old kid, I will make you mama

  • @oly355 Here kid, have a lolly. Find someone who gives a fuck, really.

  • @SkInHoUnD well, you can just, stop replying, you start it, you stop it, that's the way it works, idiot.

  • @oly355 Actually he did stop...you got pwned, look like the biggest fucktard in the history of youtube, and he's gone on his merry way. A legend in is own right really.

You on the other hand, remain. Bitching, whining, kicking and screaming.

Be more productive and resolve your fucked up mommy issues.

  • @Yourmomsgunt well, why did he had to call me an Idiot in the first place haha I just played his little game. look like people on the internet can't solve their reply other way than calling other fag. yeah I got pwned, but if he's a legend, that mean he waste a lot of time doing this. poor little guy

  • @oly355 LoL!!! you got pwned you little faggot!!!

Skinhound is jus sayin what we all think...your a mommy tit sucking little pussy

  • Do you not know Death when you see it old man? Witness my power...

  • id laugh if the witch kind tea bagged gandalf llol

  • fail video name...

    angmar...

    retard

  • THIS DIDNT HAPPEN! It was an EVEN face off in the book. Why would Jackson wanna make Gandalf look weaker when he wasn't?

  • @ZakBrownrigg123 damit so jackson didnt want to look kik @ss did he? fuk u jackson so gandalf is stronger nice

  • @Agomongo1235

    What you wrote is incomprehensible.

  • @ZakBrownrigg123 wat about u elminate the som words O-o

  • @ZakBrownrigg123 I guess the point is that it's regular folks like Aragorn, Theoden, the Hobbits etc who have to deal with their world's troubles. Gandalf is a messenger from another land, and while he's got a part to play in the fight, it's not a main part. It's showing that Gandalf can't fight the war on his own - but it also shows that the bad guys are wrong for focussing on dealing with people like Gandalf and Galadriel and ignoring the regular people.

  • @smartalec2001

That surely wasn't Tolkien's intention with this face off. When the gates of Minas Tirith are broken open, the Witch King is the first to come through and Gandalf meets him and tells him to go back. Before they get a chance to fight, the horn of Rohan is sounded and the Witch King flies away.

  • @smartalec2001

I think Jackson was just trying to make a more intimidating opponent to increase the hype of the battle of Pellenor fields. Gandalf is far more then a messanger: he's sent from Manwe to rally the forces of good versus evil and fight with them.

  • he gave Gandalf the business... wish they kept this scene.

  • lol so bad the which king should have killed him fast and then fly away

  • @Ryandetroit um i think he didnt because gandalf had the fire ring and the sun was comming up meaning it would have given gandalf more energy cause of the ring so at that time the witch king was weak compared to gandalf

  • Do you not know DEATH when you see it, old man?

    epic line

  • bad qouality :(

  • Chuck Norris would have OWNED that witch king

  • I don't get it. What distracted it?

  • Sauron did.

  • @ExClUr For some reason it wasn't in this video, but it was the horns sounding the arrival of the Riders of Rohan that distracted the Witch King.

  • Thank you for the explanation,

    wynternight777.

  • Witch King is beast.

  • Some people may not have seen this because it may be part of the special edition extended version. Which, I have all movies in. :D

  • i've never seen this scene...

  • meh too

  • has anyone?

  • The Witch-King really should've gotten more screen time, in the movies and the books.

  • yeah, I agree. In the movie he's shown maybe 3min. of all time together.

  • gandalf could beat all 9 this is bullshit

  • If you mean "kill" that would be difficult. [Killing a ringwraith is another matter entirely] But evidently he met them (6 in one version and 9 in the LOTR; The Council of Elrond) in battle and got away with it unscathed.

  • In fact if you read the chapter "Palantiri" in Unfinished tales it says that Sauron would not let anyone besides himself use the Palantir he had stolen from Minas Ithil---It says that Sauron did not have any minion with spiritual power that could match Saruman or even Denethor. Thus Denethor had stronger spiritual powers than the WK-- and so does Gandalf.

  • idk why there's so many gandolf fans complaining that the witchking got the best of him. the witchkings a pretty bad ass charecter and one of the best fictional villians i've ever seen. i think they make good arch enemies,

  • ur this question is based on this belief that the movies and the book shows the same thing which is not the case

Jacksionisation is done when Witch King is shown throwing Gandalf off his horse which is just opposite to book in which Gandalf denies passage to him in Minas Tirith n Witch King leaves the gate in utter frustration,Gandalfs horse was Shadowfax itself of divine race so it couldnt be frientened by any device least of all by the darkness

  • why would they delete this scene? I thought it unfair that the witch king didn't get more screen time.

  • just when I thought Gandalf will pull out some fancy trick with his staff... like summon a tornado or at the very least a ray of holy light... his stick broke

  • Yeah I gotta admit even though I LOVE these movies and love alot of Jackson's work, they made the right choice in cutting scenes like this out. The Rankin/Bass movies weren't perfect ( liked it but voices like the WitchKing's voice were terrible) but even they got the right idea of not having them actually get the chance to fight. Some of those extended scenes were interesting and had more of the book in them, but some like this were unneeded although he said "I will break him" in the cut.

  • angmar not agmar

  • I love this scene. And as a bonus you get to see a fire enchanted sword.

  • why'd he go again?

ive seen the three films but what?

  • Ok in the book this scene happens when the forces of Mordor break through the Gates of Minas Thirith , the Witch King enters and only Gandalf remains standing to meet him but the Witch King does not break Gandalf's staff .

The Confrontation also ends when reinforcements for the good guys arrive . In the novel Gandalf states that as the white non safe Sauron is more terrible than he is , he does say it is written no man can kill the Witch king but the Witch King can't beat him like this .

  • The hobbit Merry used a special dagger that had the power to kill a Nazgul. That's why Merry burned his hand after pulling the dagger back out of the Witch King's leg. Then Eowyn finished him off.

  • Merry burned his hands because the blade went fwoosh. Just like ANY blade that is used against the Witch King and the Nazgul.

    But the dagger WAS enchanted.

  • I don't like this scene at all because Gandalf looks like a true weakling...Even PIPPIN draws his sword and tries to go after him. What a joke.

Did you know that Gandalf fought 6 possibly all of the Nazgûl on Weathertop before Frodo got there? Although the WK was given a "demonic force" by Sauron, see Letter #210 p.272, before the battle of Pelennor Fields-- Gandalf had become Gandalf the White which at the very least would give him a slight edge.

  • And Aragorn fought all of them on Weathertop. What's your point?

It was a battle of wills, and Gandalf's was weaker.

  • No, Aragorn did NOT fight all of them on Weathertop.

In the book 5 Nazgul, including the WK, attacked them in the dell below W. But the WK and the others withdrew mainly because the WK nearly got killed by Frodo wielding his Dúnedain sword. He uttered the word Elbereth which was harmful to the WK, which implied that he was in league with the High Elves. The WK had also been shaken by the confrontation with Gandalf earlier: they thought that Frodo would succomb to his wound sooner or later.

  • My point remains. It was a battle of wills. Gandalf's was weaker. There's nothing else to it.

  • You have no point! :) As if Gandalf would have a weaker will than the WK....Don't think so.

  • Mmk. Fanboys don't see sense. So I'm done.

    Gandalf lost. Get over it.

  • @LimesNorrlandicus gndalf was immensly strong but so was the witch king

they were pretty much equals and even gandalf feared him.

the witch king would have been more powerful than gandalf at the seige of minas tirith because as the ring came closer to mount doom saurons power and strength grew...and so did the witch kings

  • that's gandalf could batter the witch-king if gandalf the grey could defeat the balrog then gandalf the white would destroy the witch-king

  • clearly not if gandalfs on the ground about to die

  • naaaah gandalf still had his sword he wudda zapped he witch king

  • @thedoctorthemaster witch king can't be killed by a man

  • @R4mpZy Yes but gandalf isnt a man

  • Happened totally different in the book...

  • I would like to see a movie version of Silmarillion and see how they would make Morgoth and Ungolianth. Well maybe some day I'll get lucky

  • That would be AWESOME. Can you imagine? the Lord of the Rings, the Hobbit, and the Silmarillion all in one blue-ray set!!!!

  • The Witch King rocks

  • Do you not know death when you see it old man?

That line still makes me shudder.

  • you bastard you cut out the bit were the horn goes off you scum

  • The Witch King of Angmar rules!!!!
