I happen to prefer a snare tone like yours for certain musical styles, but it's all a matter of preference. I wouldn't worry about these criticisms of your tuning man!
3. Your toms have excellent tone. But they would likely get lost in a mix. Sometimes something that sounds like it has a little TOO MUCH attack to it on its own will actually sound just right in a mix of guitars and vocals. For stick attack, try around 4k-6k, and for more clarity overall, anything between 8k and 10k will do well. Overheads would also help capture more of the impact, but that may not be enough without having the overheads sound too harsh with the cymbals.
....if they are, then you should probably tighten them or if that doesn't help, put a mic on the bottom. Make sure both mics have that same imaginary "x" pattern to keep it in phase. Normally, if you have some snare response but need a hair more, you can boost the signal between 3k and 6k....I find this range to be the place where the brightness of the snares specifically is. The tone of your snare is pretty good, but you need way more snare sound for it to sound complete.
(continued) If two mics are out of phase (particularly if you use two mics on the same instrument), things tend to clash resulting in a less than satisfactory sound (there are plenty of videos and articles on the internet where you can hear the difference). The purpose of overheads is to capture the sound of the kit as a whole as well as give a bit more ambiance and realism to the sound.
2. It sounds almost as though you don't even have your snares turned on. If they are not, turn them on.....
While I don't know even near everything that needs to be known in order to be a master mixer, I still know enough about mixing drums that I can give you a few good pointers.
1. First off, you need to put two overheads, making sure they are in phase (make sure that they are located parallel to each other, and point the mics so that you could imagine a straight line coming from the pickup end of each mic....these "lines" should form an "x"). When mics are in phase, they sound clean and full.
get overheads, and the snare sounds too much like a really high tom, you should try putting the mic on the bottom of the snare to pick up more of the snare sounds
dude those graphics are sick as fuck!! but instead of the sound rings i would try moongels they give your tom that deeper sound and also let it ring but yeah man excellent playing
do u use just mics and a mixer or what.i dont need to have my music go through a computer so i just need the easiest way to have my drums micd. please tell me how since i have no clue. thanks
@JeffEllsworth it depends what your price range is i have a tascam us 1641 and its 260 which isnt that bad cause its really good. and then you need mics obviously which are like 118 and then you just need the stands and other stuff its going to cost like 500 altogether nad then you use cubase le which comes free with cubase! :D or get the full one illegally which i dont recommend Le is good enough
@theshuttersound No worries man.. lol - Pop by and have a listen to my kit UN- MIC'd lol - Click on my name , just put up a new drum video - Crank it to hear my kick ! lol
@theshuttersound actually i think you shoulad more compresion to the bass get some over heads and mic the bottom snare and probably get a job to buy all that
Ha! I recorded this before I knew anything about compressing. All my EQing thus far has been with headphones that I recently discovered are inaccurate the true sound. Expect better quality on my upcoming video.
Also check out other drum kits from Risen Drums at: Risendrums. com
EQ and Compression are really tricky to get down pat. I learned this the hard way. I work sound at my high school theatre, and I do quite a bit of recording on my own and the one major thing I have learned is that EQ is really meant to highlight and tone-down certain frequencies to balance differences in mics and speakers. EQ is not meant to add what was never there. So mic placement and good mic selection is key!
Also, with compression. Compressors are meant to smooth out and improve the harmonic content of a track. So if you get a great sounding track, it'll probably sound ten times better with a good compressor. Compressing takes ALOT of time to figure out on your own. So if you are completely new to compressors, I recommend talking to an seasoned engineer who has been recording professionally for a good amount of time.
I happen to prefer a snare tone like yours for certain musical styles, but it's all a matter of preference. I wouldn't worry about these criticisms of your tuning man!
