  • This near perfect creature (half woman & half rushy brook spirit type). I can see how if you weren't really taken her this would be 10 mins of endurance, but for anyone who knows anything about music & writing & self-expression & art & performance this is all just pure Sunday gravy

  • to tears..every time.

  • I think Ys may well be the album of the century. beautiful beautiful beautiful :'(

  • I love the crickets!

  • She plays so fast, her movements almost look inhuman. I'm impressed, as always.

  • Really cool way to take a classical instrument and do something new.

  • she makes me want to learn to play the harp

  • she is the (initial) reason i took it up :)

  • that didn't feel like 9 minutes

  • This wasn't as good as her debut album, but still one worth listening to (love how long each individual track is)

  • Really? I thought this was an even better album I loved how each track built up ie monkey and bear and only skin. the inclusion of the drums ect..

each to there own I suppose :-) what are some of your favourite tracks then do you prefer when its quite sparse

  • My favourite tracks would have to be on her other album, things like "Casseopia", "Sadie" and my personal favourite, "Peach, Plum, Pear"

The songs themselves aren't all that special, it's the way she sings them that I love most.

  • its totally different, they are both amazing!

  • Ys is the most beautiful album I've ever heard

  • I love the crickets...

  • actually I agree with IamQiet because I love the crickets too. I love that the audience is so rapt and silent and so in awe of every note that you can hear crickets when she's quiet.

Ys is the most beautiful album I've ever heard too..

  • oh desire...

I don't think I've ever been this touched by a song. Her writing is outstanding.

  • seven days out to sea.

  • she seems to be in a strange mood in this one

  • anyone know what this song is about?

I thought it was about a person dying, but im not sure who.

  • I feel like it's about a lot of things, but It strikes me that she is talking about her instrument in a lot of parts. And music, and what she's trying to achieve. I'm not sure, it sounds so beautiful regardless.

  • I've got the feeling that it's about needing to distance herself from a relationship and the remnants of the feelings they each had thereafter. Like what would have happened if they'd carried on? Just a thought...it's an unbelievable piece of music whichever way :)

  • I interpreted it a bit differently but that's the cool part. Seems like she's asking someone that left her life to wait for her at the 'top of the flight.' When she says 'drop a bell down the stairs hear it fall forever more' to me it meant remember the person for the rest of your life. But if the person was lost at sea then you'd never know what happened to them, they'd drown mute as a rock. Then she seems to talk about life as if it's a play with 'cardboard, wires, glue and audience.

  • It's about Ys (hence the album name). It you look up the tale, it's about a princess named Dahut who kills men and feeds them to the ocean in order for her city to prosper. In the end, she is tricked by the devil and her father throws her in the sea (I'm summarizing)

I think the dove is supposed to be Ys and Dahut is the narrator of the song.

  • actually, she only discovered the tale of Ys after she'd written and recorded all the songs - prior to doing so, she claims to have known nothing of it.

i suppose It just happened to be an astonishing coincidence that her songs covered so many aspects of the tale

  • Then I think she switches to the sailor's (husband/boyfriend) point of view when she describes being out to sea in a storm and hearing 'the bell.' Note that since he was out to sea he heard the bell instead of everyone that remembers him hearing "it fall forever more."

we will be fine, but what was yours and mine appears to be a sandcastle that the gibbering wave takes if it's all just the same then will you say my name: say my name in the morning, so I know when the wave breaks?

  • this is incredible, wow

  • mos tepic win in the hsitory of everythinggg....

  • omg i epically fail at spelling.

    lets try this again:

most epic win in the history of everythinggggggg...

  • amazing, clear footage. thanks for sharing!

  • cool

  • Beautiful.

    My favorite!!

  • she has such talent, and beauty with her words. My friends say they dont get it, but thts the greatness with imagination! Most people wont get it because they dont try to. If u open your mind and dont listen to your judgement right away, you will see the beauty.

  • luckily for me, the most evident of her beauty was apparent from the moment I first heard that angelic voice.

  • never truer words.

    i love you.

  • She's got the whole world in her fingers. Her music is so MODERN.

  • This is the best version of this song...she tried to downplay the childish element of her voice for the record, forget it. I listned to this version like 110 times while I wrote my novel.

  • Yep, me too, totally understand, i did the same thing while writing my novel too! :)

  • I did too. Fuck, I bet all our novels are the same. What are both your novels about? Mine is about an asshole that leaves pretentious comments on the internet, then is killed slowly by a paramilitary/drug cartel leader.

  • My novels are about assholes...but wait...not just assholes...assholes with talent. Which means the things they says are BEYOND the average caller on Z103, you know? It's like, yes, on Z103, we would listen to you, and take you seriously, but there's another idealistic world, where you're sucking on a clump of dirt, getting ready to go to the gas chamber, whatever.

  • thank you saved my life

    :)

  • I love Joanna so much. She's the most expressive musician I've ever heard. Simply outstanding.

  • I just saw her at BAM

when she started with the "lomg face" bussiness and the the bell tolling i lost it I was Bawling

my friend was kind with the sharing of the the tissues

    PS sounds like "master song"

  • Here here... Though it may be madness, I will take to the grave your precious long face.. And though our bones they may break and our souls seperate..Why the long face? Though our bodies recoil from the grip of the soil.. Why the long face? (I too, have been too stung by tears to even see, when listening to this most beautifully sad song...) If its all just the same, will you say my name, say my name...?

  • My favourite part! Though the whole song is beautiful.

  • she is one of the best singers/songwriter

    we've had in years

  • Hoe do you remember all those lyrics?

  • This song uncovered a lingering truth in me. Listening to her is nectar.

soothes the aching atrophy of modrn life.

    she is undoubtedly my 'Medb'

  • Any comment that can connect Joanna to the Táin is getting my thumbs up ;)

  • Beautiful.

    My favorite!!

  • best show ever

  • wow.. this is really amazing.

  • intoxicating and passionate

  • she's incredible and that's all there is to it..bridging the gap between 70's folk, neo-classical, indie and alternative emo? add a touch of peter gabriel from 1969-74 and thats her. plus, shes real pretty for a harpist!

  • she's intoxicating. look at those fingers move! and then, close your eyes, and escape with her and her captivating storytelling.

  • shes got the pixie ear sticking out. hot stuff

  • astonishing!

  • That's great footage. Thank you!

  • Brilliant! Just wondering if you filmed any more from this show?
