@codemonkeybrains The reason why I think De Niro did a perfect job for 2 reasons, he can fucking act but also more thank likely I would bet a million to 1 that he experienced the same feelings and thoughts in his real life before he was even acting, so this just came natural to him
That is what I think, any comments or thoughts out there?
There are not many people who can relate in any way to this scene. Most probably sat in the theater and wondered why the scene kept going on so long. When I saw it, it grabbed me hard. This is one of the most amazing scenes I've ever seen in a movie. He is feeling awful and alone, but holding a gun in his hand. He could go either way. Simply amazing.
also television plays an extremely important and complex role in the lives of lonely people. It both provides a sort of basic opiate against the pain of loneliness, and leaves the lonely person feeling disgusted at their own reliance on television. The images of human connection both provide an escape and rub your face in the fact that you are sitting, alone, watching.
Funny you should say that malcomscotty . . . a number of people have said the same thing about this scene. Travis is at heart simply very, very lonely and he fights back at it with violent thoughts until some sort of wrong alchemy occurs.
Watching romantic couples slowdancing might well have been the moment of fusion.
@robertschelly I wouldn't say it was a moment of fusion in as much of Travis's self-realization of how alone he really was. How he just wanted a connection that transcended all the shit he saw on a day-to-day basis.
@malcolmscotty1 I disagree. No one moment pushes him over the edge. The scene where he kicks over the tv is just as likely showing his breakdown if you ask me. But I still wonder what the hell De Niro was thinking during this. His subtlety is fucking incredible. Also consider that some of the couples dancing are interracial and Travis is scared of black people. For a person like that it must be confusing to see objects of his desire (women) dancing with people he fears.Just my 2 cents

My favorite scene too, ralfsu, and one of my favorite songs. Can't decide who's more amazing, Scorsese, De Niro or Jackson Browne. Thanks for posting! ♥
