Remember, these "Double Stops" are based on the Notes in 'C' Major Scale, or C-D-E-F-G-A-B-C. So the harmony is in alternating Intervals of Major and Minor 3rds based on the Key of C or:
C-E = Major 3rd
D-F = Minor 3rd
E-G = Minor 3rd
F-A = Major 3rd
G-D = Major 3rd
A-C = Minor 3rd
B-D = Minor 3rd
As for why it is called the Memphis Scale, this is just someone down South trying to take credit for something they didn't develop, i.e. like the Nashville Numbering System. =)
@WDux G-D does not equal a Major 3rd. It is a Major 5th. G-B would be a Major 3rd. Either one would still sound great especially with Chicken Pickin, Rockibilly, or Country styles.
I'm assuming you call it the "Memphis scale" as a reference to the song by Chuck Berry? I've never heard the term before. Here in the States we call it "sliding sixths". Chuck uses them as the melody for his song "Memphis, Tennesee". Ironically, probably the most famous guitarist associated with it Steve Cropper. It's funny because he's from Memphis! Listen to his intro to Sam and Dave's "Soul Man".
Thanks much for the scale and theory lesson. It's so much easier to learn when you have both the scale and some examples using them. Nice work. Much appreciated.
I learned this when I was a kid by learning the live version of "Shock Me" by Kiss -- playing the record over and over again. I still use it all the time as an easy, melodic way to get around the neck. But until I saw this I never knew it had a name!
I understand it that way that if you wear a shirt with a Lonsdale logo, you can wear your jacket in such a way that it hides the outer letters so that you display NSDA on your chest and can be recognized by others of the same attitude.
I meanwhile learned that the Lonsdale logo on that T-shirt is sometimes associated with the NSDAP (Nazis) among some insider circles. I was not aware of this and do not sympathize with them in any way.
i have been trying to teach myselg to play guitar for around 5 years as i cannot afford lessons, but guitar theory goes straight over my head!!!it's like trying to learn chinese!!!great vid!!!
Unfortunately the sound of the high quality version has some artefacts, it is worse than in standard quality, I notives this on some other videos, too. Does anyone have an idea what causes this?
the video problems could be youtube raping your file while it uploads or it could have been a file transfer issue as well. If not that, its probably a camera issue
So that's what Cat Stevens was playing in the Peace Train intro...
