  • So that's what Cat Stevens was playing in the Peace Train intro...

  • "Let's have a look at YOUR PAPERS!"

  • that old strat sounds so sweet

  • an early Music Man i see in the backround...pre- 1980 from the badge...which model ?

  • Fine job! Well done demonstrating with minimal verbosity. I wish all u-tube demos were so concise.

  • what would be a good song to practice this on do you think where it kinda stays on a chord for a longer while so i can get used to it

  • i just realized that this is what clapton plays at the end of the song "back home"

  • In The Gallery :-D

  • lonsdale is a boxing brand...after lord lonsdale, who sponsored boxing and made the world championship belts back in the day

  • If you don't know this yet.... you're awesome :P

  • Thanks for that, very well explained.

  • His guitar has an amazing look! !!

It is custom shop or strat's original 60?

  • thats a good lookin guitar> what year is it

  • this is just the scale harmonized in 6th? Why calling it "Memphis"?

  • @gibderfenson

Remember, these "Double Stops" are based on the Notes in 'C' Major Scale, or C-D-E-F-G-A-B-C. So the harmony is in alternating Intervals of Major and Minor 3rds based on the Key of C or:

    C-E = Major 3rd

    D-F = Minor 3rd

    E-G = Minor 3rd

    F-A = Major 3rd

    G-D = Major 3rd

    A-C = Minor 3rd

    B-D = Minor 3rd

As for why it is called the Memphis Scale, this is just someone down South trying to take credit for something they didn't develop, i.e. like the Nashville Numbering System. =)

  • @WDux G-D does not equal a Major 3rd. It is a Major 5th. G-B would be a Major 3rd. Either one would still sound great especially with Chicken Pickin, Rockibilly, or Country styles.

  • @MrSunburstStrat778

Yeah, it is a typo. Thanks for pointing that out.

  • Sehr gut spielen, und du bist ein gut lehrer. Enshuldegungst mein deutsch. Ich bin Americaner. :)

  • great lesson but could you please explain in detail how to get that rockabilly kind of sound at 5:15

  • God job man!

  • Not good,..very good

  • Is that a custom Shop heavy relic 62 / time machine strat? If not could you tell me what model it is? Thanks

  • thanks!

  • Didn't Van Morrison used the scale on Brown Eyed Girl? (-:

The little guitar lick in the start of the song.

  • I read the name somewhere but don't know for sure where it comes from

  • I'm assuming you call it the "Memphis scale" as a reference to the song by Chuck Berry? I've never heard the term before. Here in the States we call it "sliding sixths". Chuck uses them as the melody for his song "Memphis, Tennesee". Ironically, probably the most famous guitarist associated with it Steve Cropper. It's funny because he's from Memphis! Listen to his intro to Sam and Dave's "Soul Man".

  • good!

  • Thanks much for the scale and theory lesson. It's so much easier to learn when you have both the scale and some examples using them. Nice work. Much appreciated.

  • great stuff

  • I learned this when I was a kid by learning the live version of "Shock Me" by Kiss -- playing the record over and over again. I still use it all the time as an easy, melodic way to get around the neck. But until I saw this I never knew it had a name!

  • Brilliant thank you!

  • Cool lesson. Great!

  • I understand it that way that if you wear a shirt with a Lonsdale logo, you can wear your jacket in such a way that it hides the outer letters so that you display NSDA on your chest and can be recognized by others of the same attitude.

  • cool accent.

  • Very nice! Thanks for sharing! 5 stars

  • I meanwhile learned that the Lonsdale logo on that T-shirt is sometimes associated with the NSDAP (Nazis) among some insider circles. I was not aware of this and do not sympathize with them in any way.

  • @IngoRaven my surname is lonsdale? i'm not a nazi!!

  • i have been trying to teach myselg to play guitar for around 5 years as i cannot afford lessons, but guitar theory goes straight over my head!!!it's like trying to learn chinese!!!great vid!!!

  • just a scale using 6ths ... heard the name somewhere ... but right, names are just names...

  • Thanks Ingo - terrific Lesson. I`ve been staring at a book talking about sixth harmony notes, and this has brought the lesson to life. Cheers

  • The last was Bob Dylan Precious Angel uh? From "Slow train coming" album...

  • nice guitar...what year?

  • Ottimo lavoro ancora, lezione interessantissima, ILLUMINANTE. ***** :o)

    NICE JOB!!

  • Great stuff Ingo, I recognised the precious angel lick there near the end. I didn't realise it was played with double stops like that. Thanks.

  • Unfortunately the sound of the high quality version has some artefacts, it is worse than in standard quality, I notives this on some other videos, too. Does anyone have an idea what causes this?

  • where are you from?

the video problems could be youtube raping your file while it uploads or it could have been a file transfer issue as well. If not that, its probably a camera issue
