  • did youtry with gold?

  • I knew UFO's existed!

  • Love the ending.

Copper tubes and magnets to assist elevators?

Expensive but safe, yes? A broken elevator could have a safe uninfluenced descent!

  • Diamond is so "un-magnetic" it is listed under the category of diamagnetic, vs. paramagnetic in quality, with an Xm of -2.1. Zero is the breaking point for substances that, above zero, have at least some permeability; iron is about the best. Bottom line, no, the magnet will fall unhampered, except by air resistance (or passing UFO's, of couse). But if you are unconvinced, please send me a diamond tube and I'll test it myself. (B-b)=[

  • So would the magnet fall a lot slower with a diamond tube?

  • LOL. Good video. They really are magic. The universe is an amazing place.

One serious question: are you not concerned about being exposed to such powerful magnets?

  • Do u think magnetism has a speed limit?if I created a magnetic field and then created another one right behind the first would they interact?

  • this is dope

  • needs a replay with a multimeter on the tube!

  • Where can I buy one of these gadgets. Does Ronco make it..?

  • @sakahowdah

I got the magnets from Make Magazine, makezine.com They make these fantastic kits for various projects. The magnets were intended to make a magnetic rail gun demonstration.

  • Yes, but it doesn't fall as slowly as it does with copper because copper is a better conductor (less resistance) for electricity; hence, a stronger magnetic field is induced.

  • Would this work as well in an aluminum tube? Or brass?

  • @v16050118130114 yeah but copper works best

  • haha, i like the end! thats my kind of humor :P

  • THANKS

  • LINUX YES! Cool vid by the way

  • Appreciate the explanation, good vid too.

  • How much for the parts?

  • The physics behind this is just amazing... why is a current produced in the pipe? Because of the CHANGING (due to movement) magnetic field... and a changing magnetic field (technically magnetic flux) produces a current. This is the principle our whole world of electronics works!!! Motors, generators etc... Thanks Heinrich Lenz ^_^

  • Just kidding...

  • very interesting video!!!

  • Nearly correct. The magnet induces a current in the tube which is in concentric circles (not the magnetic field lines). The current then induces a magnetic field which circles around the current and due to Lenz's law the magnetic field induced opposes the magnet's field lines. that's what slows it down.

Haha I think this proves that UFOs exist as well.

  • @arick1423 Thanks arick, you are, of course, correct. I was over-simplifying.
