There is an interview that Westwood did with the Guardian newspaper from 2004 in which he claimed he was 27 years old. So he reckons that he was born in 1977, LOL. He definitely looks older than 10 years old here!
Dialect are keeping the UK hip-hop scene alive... respect the architects, this is class, gangster chronicle and gunshot's the singles are my top british hip-hop albums
remember watching this on tv back then, lost count how many times i rewatched that tape back then, dont know what happened to it so thanks for posting this, nice one
You should understand that every rap artist in the UK tried to sound as US as possible. Even Rodney P formaly known as (Roddy Rock)
used to sound US. We the UK old school also give credit to them for being amongst the first to use UK and JA twang to stear UK artists into establishing UK hip hop sound as a brand. Mc Dizzy Hights was actually the 1st to sound UK, then The Dynamic 3.
I was there so I know. Uk hip hop has had an evolution. So don't diss the real pioneers, try to understand us.
i must confess i dont know too much of hip hop, always thought UK hip hop was absolutely shit, and the only good stuff is american 90's 'golden era'. but that bit in the car was the absolute bees knees, fucking genius. cant believe its in the 80s.
Martin. Musically UK Hip Hop was much more hard core than US rap. If you can, listen to the London Posse's album Gangsters Chronicle, its brilliant. Also try Hijack The Terrorist Group, The Demon Boyz, Derek B, Ruthless Rap Assassins, Caveman (fry you like fish), Outlaw Posse and MC Mell'O'.
Modern UK Hip Hop is fake and appalling, but then so is modern US Hip Hop. Hip Hop died in around the mid 1990s.
and old school uk rap was nothing short of embarrassing.... i admire london posse for not rapping with a crap american accent where it was seen as normal(i really dont know why you would rap with a fake american accent in the first place)...if you want to hear good uk hip hop try , Ty,Roots Manuva , Jehst, Skinnyman,Asaviour...theres loads more
yh260527 I appreciate your comment re; old school uk hip hop being embarracing but we had to start some place. Just so you know, it was no embarrasment for us uk artists.
As for fake American accsents, every Rapper uk in the 80's did that at first. Junior G, Mc Mell'o, Sargent Rock, Rebble Mc, Dynamic 3 etc etc etc. The first Uk Rapper to use Uk accsent and full Cockney style with no appolagy was the one and only Uk Legend Dizzy Hights. Big him up. check him on the uk fresh 85 vid. Bless.
Just to drop a few more names to the list: MC Duke, Overlord X, Monie love, The Cokkie Crew, but I was most impressed with Caveman (airtime and promotion)
Just to pick up on that point about embarressing. Living it was far from embarressing and it was new and interesting. However when you look at US hip hop from the eighties the same could be said. But like I said, living it was cool. Today's MC's will also look back in 20 years time and say they are embarressed.
Big up westwood for living a dream and creating a scene. Also did anyone notice the young Trevor Nelson tak over from westwood on the then Pirate Kiss FM which also was the stomping ground for Jazzy B from Soul II Soul. Peace!
I agree with all of that. Except Derek B. Great DJ. But fake as hell with his "made up MC" bollocks. Last I heard he was buying women champagne in clubs and telling them: "I used to be Derek B". Sad. He had collossal DJ talent.
The section at the end really makes you realise what a disgusting commercial persuit modern day hip-hop has become, from noble early ideals. Westwood probably knows it as well, but the man's got to get paid!
i just found out this afternoon that sipho died, and im gutted that i did not know before. sipho has so much talent, so much more to give to this world. rest in peace bro, my the good lord remember you.
The best bit on this show was the segment with Crazy Noddy and Fingers. Where Fingers is cutting up It's Not Unusual - that blew us away at the time. Sypho was great - who remembers Yankee the beatbox? I remember an LWR session that was those two and another beatbox all battling (can't recall who). That was classic.
That's the part I'm chatting about. The bit where the car stops and picks up whatshisname I swear is East Hill wandsworth next to what used to be St John's hospital.
Ha ha fashion I loved, but could hardly afford. Think thats why I loved hip hop & breakdance, cos you didn't have to wear your best to spin around on the floor.
That Bobby Caldwell Do 4 Love vid is a bit naff but the track & his vocals on itis kicking.
Man this brings back some memories. Days when times were better and more innocent. When Hip Hop was real and not some business mans money making bitch. If anyone can send me a copy of this documentary I would be eternally grateful. I had it on tape but tapped over it by accident, I was gutted, this programme brings back some better times. Thanks for uploading it.
