  • Thank you so much! This video with nature brought tears to my eyes. The visual images flowed with the song. THANKS ~ Just a product of 1952.

  • You misspelled my name. It's Mariah...

  • @maiahloehr

    Thank you

  • The Doug Anthony All Stars Version:

    Way down south,

    They have a name,

For wind, and rain, and fire.

    The fire's "Joe",

    The rain is "Bess",

    And the call the wind...

    "The Wind".

    *smiles sweetly*

    xx

  • Wow...lol I had to listen to this song. my mom sorta named me after it since my grandmother is half native american and 'they called the wind mariah'. it's not that bad of a song, also awesome video.

  • I used to listen to the music of Paint your Wagon together with my dad. I remember him having the music. My dad is gone for almost twenty years, but the memory is still there. Thanks so much.

  • no

  • And its spelled mariah not maria, maria is pronounced Mareeuh and mariah is in the song..

  • @Smiley1draws4life FAIL! "Maria" can be pronounced as both (mah REE ah) and (mar EYE ah), and back in the period the movie is set in (Gold Rush) it was commonly pronounced (mar EYE ah) among people of British descent. You can take up the spelling of Mariah Carey's name with her parents.

  • I hate this song with a burning passion. My name is mariah....so everytime i meet someone i meet someone they say like mariah carey!?!? :D and i dont like mariah carey...OR like the thesong!? They call the wind mariah~!!! e-e i hear this song so much bcuz of my stupid name.

  • donnah79, Beautiful video. This is a fantastic version and your photos do your presentation full justice. Thank you so much for this.

  • 12 people aren't named Mariah,

    Ha ha only kidding!

  • This is in response to the question: "Does this have anything to do with the group that calls themselves :"Moriah Conquering Wind." - yes it does. Clint Eastwood is a treasured member of the Illuminati family. Note other reference to his/their religion in the movie: 1:33:00 - Parson fulminating to drunken crowd : "Ye godless jaspers! Who are you? Freemasons? Rosicrucians? Heathen emissaries from the dens of Babylon?

  • mariah carey got her name from this song :)

  • @MsBrowse So did I : )

  • That's how crazy women get their hair done, Have mariah do it.

  • they made this song for me b\c my MARIAH!!!!!!!! :)

  • Almost every time I tell someone my name they go, "Oh, They Call the Wind Mariah!" and then, "You hear that a lot don't you?" and I'm like, "YEAH."

Lol well I finally heard the song.

  • The panoramas were great, but the flowers and humming birds were off target.. a little incongruous with such a soaring song. But over all a good video.

  • beautiful

  • Harve Presnell also played in the tv series "THE PRETENDER" as the evil Mr.Parker.

  • I heard this song in the credits of 50 First Dats, which was used in memory of Standley Sandler.

  • great post..good volume.. Harve's version is the best one.

  • Great song from a great movie! Thanks for posting!

  • BEAST MY NAME IS MARIAH!

  • Paint your Wagon was one of the best movies I have seen. I have always been a Clint Eastwood fan but I fell in love with Harve Presnell and his voice. Would love to see it again on big screen.

  • The best!

  • Donna, Returning to my beloved grandmother's farmhouse in Tx, I photographed irises, trees, sunsets & the aftermath of a tornado. Thank you for using the proper version of Mariah (which I play on the piano) to connect power & beauty. I so-o-o relate....

  • Harve Presnell & the Roger Wagner Chorale....AND, the music-lyrics of this musical from the great duo LERNER and LOEWE ( "Camelot", "My Fair Lady", etc.)

  • Excellent !

  • Excellent ! Is This the John Raitt version ?

  • This time of the year is always good to watch Paint Your Wagon with one of the greatest actors ever, Lee Marvin!! The soundtrack was an excellant contrast to the picyure! Thanks for the post!

  • it's Mariah! i should know thats my name...

  • Ace! Thank you for posting.

Can anyone tell me if "Elizabeth" sining "a million miles away benind.." has been posted? And if so where?

    Best wishes

  • donnah79, AWESOME, AWESOME! You've perfectly captured the majesty of this splendid rendition with your photography. Would you do some more for us of this vintage?

  • The singer is Harve Presnell - he sang this in the movie version of "Paint Your Wagon". He died in 2009 at 75, pancreatic cancer. What a voice!

  • My brother sang this song in grade school when we lived in Rogers Park.

  • I love this singing of Maria best of all. Who sings this? I've listened to the Kingston Trio, but not that crazy about their version. Thank you DonnaH79 for posting this!

  • I LOVE THIS SONG

  • Iloved the movie. This was always my favourite. Wandering Star by Lee Marvin another classic

  • Sing it Harve! Beautiful man, Harve Presnell, gorgeous vioce!

  • I named my 9 month old Mariah. The song fits her perfectly. ...she's my love. My wind.

  • Where I come from, they call the wind Steve.

  • Been listening to and loving this song for 'bout 50 years....Never, never get tired of it. Hauntingly beautiful...

  • Comment removed

  • they're saying mariah. why does it say maria? maria is 'mu-ree-uh' where as mariah is 'mu-rye-uh', which is what this song says.

  • @kkathartu because back when the show takes place Maria was pronounced like the modern Mariah by gringos. Thus, the correct title of the song is "They Call the wind Maria" no H though pronounced mu-rye-uh.

  • I will hear your name in the wind...That i know.........its been that way since.

  • MAARRIAAA MARRRIIAA, MARIA !!! And the memories keep on coming. As we listen and smile.

  • my name is mariah (:

  • mariah is an amazing name, i wish i had that name, who ever has it is very lucky!

  • This is the song Mariah Carey's mother named her after

  • That's my name[: my nana nd my mama named meeh after this song[: no one ever believes meeh! haha

  • lol my name is mariah and every old person comes to me and says..."you know theres a song called they call the wind mariah" im like...DUH!!!

  • Bet you dollars to donuts your parents named you after that song. And if they ain't old enough to know the broadway play then it was the Clint Eastwood-Lee Marvin motion picture.

  • Beautiful photography

  • Harve Presnell passed away recently. He was such a versatile actor, but I remember him best for this fantastic song. Never to be forgotten!

  • Got the Paint your wagon album. This is the song I play 95% of the time.

  • wonderful, haunting song, wonderful haunting pics. Thank you so much.

  • Can you tell me who sings this version of this song?

  • Harve Presnell I think

  • Yep, Harve Presnell.

  • barbaramck- is correct. It's Harve Presnell who also starred In the Unsinkable Molly Brown w/Debbie Reynolds.

  • Fantastic video footage and it accents this

    song beautifully!

Paint Your Wagon is an american treasure!

  • I told my Mom I was reading a book called "The Name of the Wind," and she asked if it was 'Mariah,' so I had to look this up.

  • my name is meriah i was also named after this song =)

  • yay me too! =)

mothers really seem to like this song. ^_^

  • Actually the name "Mariah" came from Mariah Szymelkky who got let off in Boston and proceeded West on a donkey. She was at the shootout at the O.K.Coral tending horses when hit by a bullet ...died and was buried on boot hill. She.was always thought fondly of by the guys who new her..

  • this is where mariah carey got her name from

  • hahaa my name is mariah 2;]

  • Definitely Harve Presnell, what a singer! R.I. P. Harve!

  • Some of them are hairy.

    Some of them are bald.

  • my name is mariah!!

  • @ stewie163: Seriously? Lol, my mother named me after this song. My name's Mariah... Except, it's spelled like "Moriah", with an "O".

Yay we both have the same name, only mine's spelled differently... It's only today that I've heard this song. X3

  • It's not about what your name is.

It's about the beauty of being alone,

and the want of love. True words indeed..Ive heard this wild blowing wind...and I still do. It calls to me..and I hear its voice telling me its ok....ill be ok.Then the rain comes and soothes my soul...Hi true friend.....your missed everyday. UW

  • Where I come from, they call the wind "Steve." It's not as poetic or whatever, but that's what they call it.

  • its called they call the wind mariah you left out the h at the end it spells some completly didderent

  • you rock donnah79!!!!!!!!

i keep trying to think of a better word than amazing but i cant do it....

  • Thank you

  • @yharyhar8 Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious

  • @yharyhar8 that will do

  • Definitely Harve Presnell. It surprises me that there is so little of Harve on the YouTube. He was very active on stage and tv at the time this movie was released. IMHO he makes the song work.

  • @broadwayFan28, I so agree. Harve was great, and this song shows it. Wish we could have more of his songs here, as he was a wonderful Broadway actor and singer, especially as Daddy Warbucks in "Annie", He was also good in the movie "Fargo" and many other movies.

He passed away in the summer of 2009, and he is missed.

  • I believe that is Jon Rait. The father of Bonni Rait

  • It's not about what your name is.

It's about the beauty of being alone,

    and the want of love.

My great granny always told me moriah was outside, whenever it was windy,

and it wasn;t until she died that i appreciated this song.

making this a better comment than you throwing your hay penny in saying this is your name omg jonas brothers too while you're at it.

  • Let's compromise and say it was Harve Macrae.

  • Very very nice! Who was performing?

  • Comment removed

  • This version is Harve Presnell.

  • This song is sung by Harve Presnell from the movie Paint Your Wagons.

  • Ya!Mates, Persecution, can you believe a woman in this senior Manor, actually slapped a soda out of my hand because i insisted on pouring my own, some sprite and some orange, what a B----!Then some warned me not to get near her again, because she's Nutz, true enough, DockRocker at PepperTreeManor,N.Houston,Texas

  • my name is mariah!

  • my name is Moria!!!:D

  • What excellent diction! This is indeed the correct version. The final word.

  • FiestaIntheMaking, couldn't agree with you more. Thanks for getting the song and the singer back on track

  • Greetings from Little Meadows! And congratualions on an excellent post!

  • Why are all of you spamming this video with your religious crap? This is a great song, stop stirring up pointless garbage that has nothing to do with the song.

  • Wouldn't it be so much easier if there where flaming letters in the sky proclaiming there either was, or wasn't a God? Oh well, I guess we'll have to die before we find out. And I don't think that religion is for everyone. If you are able to live your life morally who's to say it's wrong? I think that if people where more excepting of others choices then there wouldn't be as much conflict in the world as there is today

  • accepting

  • Sorry barcalonga, I'm a product of the Amercian school system so my spelling is horrbile! :)

  • people have never been accepting, even before Christianity and all the other religions. you're right though. its not for everyone. but what makes me mad is people telling others they are stupid because they DO believe. its none of their business what others want to put faith in. so why do they waste their time? and it goes the other way. its a little known fact that its a SIN to condemn someone for their lack of belief. you can tell if someone is truly Christian by that alone.

  • Very true! Passing judgement and condeming others is wrong. I believe that it's a sin to condem anyone for how they choose to live their life. But I think that the world has come a long way form what it once was, and I'm sure that we'll keep on progressing.

  • Absolutely. its scary to think though, not long ago people were tarred and feathered, or worse.... now it seems the worst that happens is someone dissing you in public. but i know there is still a lot of violence over this sort of thing. i just wish people would learn to leave each other alone.

  • It is sad to see presecution of people over their beliefs. There's still a lot of violence in places like the Middle East, Africa, and China. And I think that people will start to live with each other peacefully, it just might not be a vary fast process.

  • i dont know if it will ever happen. seems the only way people live in peace is when they live very far away from each other lol

  • And when you ask for proof, I could give you examples from science that I find interesting. And like I said before I don't mean to be rude or belittling in anyway. I just like to talk to people and understand how they precieve things.

Ohhh.... and this song is pretty awesome! :)

  • Thanks. I've actually done a great deal of research on the idea, I've spent a great deal of time thinking about it. It's possible, but that doesn't mean it's true. I'm very literaly and can't really believe something without evidence. I know it's the point, but that doesn't reassure something like me.

I agree, it's a fantastic song and Harve was one of a kind.

  • I think it much more plausible that leaders in the Catholic Church put in the whole Deuteronomy thing. I saw a bumper sticker that made me laugh once it said "When Jesus said love thy enimies, I'm pretty sure he didn't mean to kill them". The Bible has been changed by men over time for their own purposes, I believe that's why it people's responsibilities to read it on their own and come up with their own oppinions.

  • The Bible is composed of writings from over two thousand years ago! And the Catholic Church banned certin books from being put in it. In the Bible it also says that Jesus is going to come back in a chariot of fire to bring all the souls of the believers to Heaven as he lets the anti-christ rule the world for seven years.... that sounds really crappy. I wouldn't want to believe in a God that allowed that type of thing either!

  • You're points on the corruption of the Catholic Church and error in litteral interpretation of religious materials are dead on. I took thing that the Catholic Church is based more on control and power rather than any message sent from God. People can read now more than they could a thousand years ago, they don't need a priest telling them what the Bible says. And then comes the problem of literal interpretation. Who in their right mind would read the bible literally?

  • I think that it's wonderful how far along humanity has come in just the past five decades or so. The entire world is on it's way to equality of the races and genders. And I see all the posibilities in the world and I can't but hope for a greater time than I could ever imagine. As I said before, I never ment to insult, or preach. I just don't think people talk to each other enough. I like hearing what you think about religion. You've brought up many true attrocities of religion.

  • Forgive me! It was never my intention to be insulting towards you or anyone else! I hadn't thought that anything I had say was insulting or judgemental. I just like to talk about religion and I thought I'd add my own opinion to your discussion. I have no right to pass judegement upon you ar anyone else. It's not my place. I don't believe you to be intolerant, or that you're going to hell, or that you're a sinner.

  • I don't believe that prayer is a waste if time. When I pray I feel a sense tranquility, and it puts me into a positive state of mind, so for me it's not a waste of time. I will agree with you that the Catholic Church is flawed, such people of low morality should not be in postions of power. Though people ought to do independent invesitgations of religious materials for themselves, people can make their own opinions on Faith.

  • Flawed?? Try evil. They toturted people for 1500 years just to try and control them. The recent 500 years has been nothing been scaring people, shunning people and abusing people to try and get them to believe in something they can't prove.

Prayer really doesn't work at all, pray to a lamp and see what happens. I guarentee you'll get the same results. How does false hope give you reassurance? Not trying to be a jerk here but how can you be comforted by something unprovable?

  • Because God was an idea that was shoved down your throat as a kid. You were told it was real by adults(who didn't know anymore than anyone else and were also made to believe the same story) And it's been reinforced by society because it's a good way to control the masses.

I think it's sad because it makes people apathetic and compliant to the evils of radical people. It literally says in the bible you're required to kill-Deuteronomy. This is an inherently evil religion, masked as good.

  • I don't want to start a fued here, I don't care what you do with your life, I'm not here to lecture. But don't tell me there's something wrong with me because I don't believe in religion. Don't tell me my generation, the most tolerant in history is evil or immoral. We're not segregating black people or trying to excuse it. We're not the majority of voters who voted for prop 8. Btw all of these evil and mean acts justified with religion.

  • How sad it is that people have lost their faith in God. I wonder why people turn away from God. Is it because the idea of God seems so untangible? Or that science is proof of our own random creation? God is everywhere, and in everything, from the lowest of bacteria to the infinite galaxies. Science prooves that the universe's supposed accidental occurance is imposible. And how could we ever truely know God? It's impossible for us to know God in all his glory we can only have faith in Him.

  • It isn't sad, it's a good thing. It literally says you are required to kill non believers in the bible.

Take a look at the middle east, that's the world of religion for you. They follow the Koran literally and look at how screwed up and immoral they are. Look at our past, were we moral during the middle ages?? Religion has inherently evil teachings. We can only be relieved that people have learned to grow up and rid themselves of such beliefs.

  • lol its "they call the wind MARIAH" not maria

  • Harve Presnell backed up by the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band was the best version ever of this song. I really like your photo spread. I'm not far from Auburn.

  • i was named after this song

  • Harve Presnell - What a wonderful voice!

    Beautiful pictures!

  • Then prove it

  • My sister is named after this song too. Her name is Ann.

  • Comment removed

  • The singer is Harve Presnell. Absolutely fantastic! Harve Presnell recently passed away. RIP Harve. Just a wonderful singer and actor. He played Daddy Warbucks on Broadway in "Annie" as well as other memorable performances like "The Unsinkable Molly Brown", and the father in the movie "Fargo". I just love his voice.

  • he looks and sounds so much like howard keel i too thought it was him. if you hadn't corrected me, i might have gone to my grave thinking that...

  • Rest in Peace Harve Presnell, a great voice has been silenced.

  • Please forgive me my ignorance but can you tell me when Herve passed away..

  • He just passed on on June 30, 2009. Cancer.

He also played numerous nonmusical roles later in his career, including the father in law in Fargo.

  • Thank you for letting me know .Harve had one of the best voices i've ever heard either singing or speaking,a great loss to all lf us who love his music..The part i think i will remember best, apart from singing "they call the wind" is of Mr Parker in the Pretender..

  • The photographs supporting this song are fantastic, and you did an amazing job of pulling all of this together to make for a very entertaining video clip both audibly and visually.

  • he was apart of our family and my dad and mom were very good friends of his. rip harve.

  • His career might have been bigger if he had been born 10 years earlier, when musicals were more commonplace. he would have given Howard Keel a run for his money.

  • RIP. Harve Presnell

  • it's like the most MANLY voice ever

  • Great song, great pics,I know the area im in lovelton.
