  • my friend john was born in 1996 :)

  • They apparently shut off the winch halfway down the pole by accident, and the system was 2 seconds off, according to a report I was reading, now they don't brag about the doing the ball drop until AFTER it is done.

  • Ten days later the worst winter weather New York had seen since 1888 would strike the city...

this was the first New Years Eve I tried to stay up to watch... my mom talked me out of it around 22:00 (2 hours before)... the year after and ever since I've stayed up.

  • @Railer505

I do know the 1888 storm. It swept from Maryland To Maine. In Longacres Square (now Times Square), it dumped 20 feet of snow .... in 1 day!! The storm was so bad that it led to develop the New York Subway. It opened in 1904. The same year that Times Square was born.

  • i cant wait for 2010 .. DEAD RISING 2

  • as you can see, about 25 sec before 12:00:00 the ball stops for about 10 sec. there was a glitch in the electronic hoisting system when somebody accidentally turned it off, and turned it back on 10 sec later.

...and when the clock hits 12 midnight, the ball continues to drop for a few more seconds.

  • Also, I think a leap second was added to the countdown.

  • @johnson9dantheman

no they didn't, read the nytimes article. interview with the guy in charge of the ball drop. 1995 was when they went to electronic countdown and the use of an electric winch. in 1996 somebody turned off the winch halfway through the ball drop.

  • how do you get a VCR Tape to transfer to a computer ?

  • @NickFourSpeed I use the Pinnacle Dazzle....its a USB device that connects to your computer, just plug in the AV cables from the VCR into the Dazzle, and hit record in the software that comes with it...

I got mine at Best Buy

  • Thank You..for your help..i might look into that

  • I remember watching this. It seems like forever ago.

  • lol looks like it was recorded on a vcr

  • duh....the dvd was only just inventd in 1996....

  • Actually, the DVD player was invented in 1999.

  • no, they were made available in 1996. wikipedia's proof.

  • The sad thing about Wikipedia is that it can be edited by anyone. I remember first hearing about DVD players ten years ago. Laserdiscs were still around in 1996. Perhaps someone had them confused.

  • Wikipedia may be edited, but my memory can't. My parents got a DVD player in 1997. You sir, are wrong!

  • Thank you for pointing out the obvious.

  • You mean the obvious that you missed earlier when you claimed it hadn't come about until 1999? Okay, then. You're welcome.

  • Comment removed

  • Probably a VHS VCR. Us children of the 80s remember those.

  • middle-east and indian children of the late 90s- early 2000s remember those.

    :D

  • Actually, I do.

  • wikipedia's not the only proof. i even hav a computer magazine published in 1996 that talks about dvd players and how they're 'the next best thing'... :P

  • Where is a picture of this magazine?

  • I only just got rid of my VHS VCR earlier this year.

  • I still have VHS and Beta.

  • This was the first time I ever saw the ball drop, and I've seen it each year since on ABC!

  • I was born in 1996, too.

  • i was born in 1996

  • Living through 1995 to reach 1996 was like passing through a time portal: The INTERNET and CELLPHONE became essential to most through this year.

  • I remember when the internet and cell phones became popular. Almost everybody has both now. Back in 1996, we didn´t even have the internet. The only person who had a cell phone at that time was one of my relatives. I still don´t use one.
