Wow my last comment from a year ago is still here and now its gonna be 2012 and heres my second comment im 16 this 2012 year and i hope to be able to type another comment on December 31, 2012 or January 1, 2013.
ah... the year i was born. now in 10th grade. Can't believe it is almost time to get ready for 2012. i could have sworn the 2000's were still here yesterday. Man, how time flies
You aren't kidding. My oldest son was born in 1996, and my twin son and daughter were born in '97, and they started high school this year. Where did the time go?
They apparently shut off the winch halfway down the pole by accident, and the system was 2 seconds off, according to a report I was reading, now they don't brag about the doing the ball drop until AFTER it is done.
Ten days later the worst winter weather New York had seen since 1888 would strike the city...
this was the first New Years Eve I tried to stay up to watch... my mom talked me out of it around 22:00 (2 hours before)... the year after and ever since I've stayed up.
I do know the 1888 storm. It swept from Maryland To Maine. In Longacres Square (now Times Square), it dumped 20 feet of snow .... in 1 day!! The storm was so bad that it led to develop the New York Subway. It opened in 1904. The same year that Times Square was born.
as you can see, about 25 sec before 12:00:00 the ball stops for about 10 sec. there was a glitch in the electronic hoisting system when somebody accidentally turned it off, and turned it back on 10 sec later.
...and when the clock hits 12 midnight, the ball continues to drop for a few more seconds.
no they didn't, read the nytimes article. interview with the guy in charge of the ball drop. 1995 was when they went to electronic countdown and the use of an electric winch. in 1996 somebody turned off the winch halfway through the ball drop.

@NickFourSpeed I use the Pinnacle Dazzle....its a USB device that connects to your computer, just plug in the AV cables from the VCR into the Dazzle, and hit record in the software that comes with it...
The sad thing about Wikipedia is that it can be edited by anyone. I remember first hearing about DVD players ten years ago. Laserdiscs were still around in 1996. Perhaps someone had them confused.
wikipedia's not the only proof. i even hav a computer magazine published in 1996 that talks about dvd players and how they're 'the next best thing'... :P
I remember when the internet and cell phones became popular. Almost everybody has both now. Back in 1996, we didn´t even have the internet. The only person who had a cell phone at that time was one of my relatives. I still don´t use one.
This feels like it was just yesterday :-(.

Living through 1995 to reach 1996 was like passing through a time portal: The INTERNET and CELLPHONE became essential to most through this year.
