Man when I first heard this version of night and day I as like, "wow this is exactly what Cole Porter intended when writing this song." Surely this is a masterpiece of music, quite possibly even greater than the greatest song ever made.... Of course, I am citing Rebecca Black's "Person of Interest" released just a few weeks ago. They should really do a duet! Man it's so comforting to see that music is going is such an amazing direction... I would comment more... but I gotta go shear my sheep.
First time I heard this song: 1990, approaching Los Angeles at night, alone in my car, the only light was the glow of LA lights off the clouds over the tops of the mountains that ring LA. I knew I was hearing one of the greatest recordings ever made in world history. Awesome.

Cole Porter wrote this. There's many excellent versions of this. U2's is the best I've heard in recent years. Look around, Ella Fitzgerald and many others did this many years ago and it sounded cool. But this version ... breathtaking.
@potplan You've absolutely hit the nail on the head with your comment. I feel a deep sadness throughout as well, this song gives me chills every time I hear it and Bono's interpretation of the Porter classic is absolutely phenomenal.
Ive been looking for this song for a while. I saw it a few months after my 19th birthday ( 9/4/2010) and was like "OH MY GOD! BONO IS BEAUTIFUL!" i just fell in love with them this year.. glad i did that! they are AMAZING!!!

For those wanting to purchase this track, don't click on the iTunes or Amazon links that are listed under the "likes/dislikes" because that it isn't this version that accompanies the video. @Boski391 - Yep. The last thing you said is the reason I came here to hear this song. I fell in love with a girl in 1984, I was in France. I was nine. Then I moved to the US & never saw her again. @aginnsz I think I know exactly how you feel. I've been in love for a girl for the last 23 years. I don't know where she is or what she had done with her life, but it doesn't matter. But perhabps it's better this way...
@aginnsz I have a similar problem. Maybe you can still find her, with the social media. I hope you don't let the past intrude into your present. I wish you all the best.
Most of the greats who have covered this classic standard sing it like a typical love song, I'm not complaining about that because those versions by Sinatra/Ella, etc., are fantastic, but THIS version has dark, tormented, endless obsession written all over it and that's what makes it so compelling. One of U2's best songs and Bono really went deep with his vocals. It's also got a really cool, slightly eerie arrangement too.
I completely forgot about this version of this great song. What a fantastic version!!!!! U2 is such a great band...so glad they were part of my era. Friggin' great!!! Beautiful and haunting ...
If only DJ Sasha had sold me the white label 12" dance mix of this tune by U2 in Shelleys Laserdome 1990. He even had 2 copies. After all those free drinks I gave him. GRRRRRRRR!
It was only sent to the most popular DJ's of the time. VERY VERY RARE!
U2 are living legends. They make music for the love of it & not like todays fake asses.
U2's brooding interpretation of Cole Porter's original takes you right into the heart of darkness... Portentous synths and Bono's deranged, soaring vocals are breathtaking. An overlooked masterpiece.
@irishcowboy42 well, dead people can't confirm as facts do. so I'll let facts give an answer to your statement: Bono and Sinatra were good friends and Sinatra wanted Bono to duet with him in a well known song of his repertoire "I've got you under my skin". feel free to search on YouTube for that duet and the way Bono sing it. So I think "old boy frankie sinatra" would agree with me. The way Bono sings Porter's lines, it's so intense and it depicts its covered meaning. the obsession with a lover.
@madmachine1 Good friends?? You are having a laugh yeah... And lets be honest about this the only reason why Mr Sinatra did the Duet's CD was first and foremost publicity to retain and prolong the legacy that he had built up over generations... Bono was easy pickings given the profile of both artists.
Do not get me wrong okay i admire (being an irishman) what U2 have achieved over the years and the great ambassadors they have been for our country and the wearing of the heart on the sleeve.
Not a huge U2 fan, but this version is so awesome. This is an extremely haunting and dark version of f Porter's Song. Bono's voice and the rest of the band set a steady balanced rhythm for this song. This song is superbly done by U2, I think I actually prefer this rendition to others. Dark and Brooding yes, but it seems to have added to the depth of this song. This song reaches out to me as I drive along the highway late at night alone under stars....thinking of a woman who I long for.
I love the classic but this one is amazingly haunting. The intensity is just something that captures you and lingers way after it's over. Thank you for posting had watched the honda commercial trying to figure it out. Finally found it
I'd like to thank U2 for this dark and powerful version of this classic and also for introducing me to the world of jazz and all these unforgettable burning idols: Cole and Sinatra! Long life to Paul Hewson, Larry, Edge and Adam!
É pessoal - onde o U2 "poe a mao" tudo fica bom! Realmente me impressionou, como trabalharam a musica sem destoar da grande obra ! E Bono é o cara! Perfeitos (mais uma vez)!!!!
its amazing just how ahead of their time they were. I can hear a lot of modern bands in this song. Just goes to prove how influential they really are.
An interesting time for these fellas - still dressed in their Rattle & Hum duds - but very much sounding like a band about to make one of the greatest albums of all time - Achtung Baby! I remember watching this vid over and over as an obsessed 13 year-old - they made such a profound impression on me....
Even as a cover song, probably U2's most unusual song in that it's entirely electronic. Too bad they didn't play around with electronic stuff a little more, but they're rock musicians at the core. I remember this was made for the "Red Hot and Blue" soundtrack (AIDS benefit comp).
Love and Obsession ARE the same. Let the psychologists say their nonsense. When you're truly in love all you want to do is feel your body against the other person's and when they're even 6 ft away you feel a longing for their skin. I mean if their isn't something of this song in a relationship, then what's the point? To me, feeling this way about another person the way this song expresses it. I mean to experience this feeling with another person, isn't that why we're all here?
@PsychicHarvardGrad I beleive we're here to love not necessarily (what this song conveys) lust over another. This song is about lusting for another in a obsessed manner. Lust is sometimes replaced by genuine love and respect.. Lust has an expiration point and is only for a time that it burns like a raging fire within. Having said that I do believe everyone should experience this feeling at least once, albeit however painful and tormenting it can be if not recipricated.
I have a lot of memories of this song. I had a shitty job at a plastics factory, I was getting fat lol, girls I wanted to date always seemed to be taken.....this was one of those songs I really loved in 1990....U2 FOREVER. Thanks bono/adam/edge/larry for all the great music and inspiration.
Cole Porter wrote this song. He said it was about obsession not love. The other versions don't get that - this one does. Over the top, I could listen to it all day.
I'm not a huge fan of U2 - you have to listen to a lot of crap to occasionally find a good one - frustratingly, they have made some absolutely brilliant songs in amongst the rubbish, so I have to keep listening! But I know what you mean about this version hitting the mark when others haven't. Bono's an average singer but he delivers this one fantastically I have to say!
@patriciajd1 you;re right...this is a song about obsession...and I think what makes this version so great is that U2 captures the obsesion...the professions of love that border on blackness, vocals that drip desperation....simply amazing! It is from an album "Red Hot & Blue" It is a tribute to Porter...some great stuff on there!
I didn't like this when it started because of the drum sound, but holy shit it grows on you. The video's great, interesting as it was such a transitional period for them.
I just found "In A Lifetime " with Clannad- my favorite song. In about a week I won't be able to live without this song entrenched in my mind , either! Fabulous!!
After the 'Rattle & Hum' debacle, U2 made like David Bowie and went to Berlin to "dream it all up again". In those pre-Internet days, when bands could really disappear if they wanted to, this clip was the first I'd heard of the Berlin sessions. It was World AIDS Day 1990, and I was in Brussels. I had almost given up on U2. But after seeing this video on MTV Europe, I leaned back on my sofa and knew all right was with the world again. The video's Berlin backdrop sealed the deal for me.
@SKWalrus "I leaned back on my sofa and knew all was right with the world again". My feelings at the time exactly. I remember thinking if this is the new "dream" they're having..I'm ready to follow. Next song I heard was Actung's "The Fly" and the glorious revolution was upon us
I first heard/saw "The Fly" on a November 1991 Saturday mornig in Berlin, and I wasn't sure what to think of it. But after I heard it again almost the same time of day a week later, I couldn't get it out of my head. It's one of my all-time U2 favs. It's one of their most important tracks, and is perhaps why we still talk about U2 today. Until that moment, they'd had devolved into a joke punchline in many music circles. "The Fly/Achtung Baby" made them matter again. WATCH MORE TV!
what an evil song. i play the standart at the moment on my jazz guitar and normally i'm not a fan of things like this. but this song kicks ass. night and day as a story of passion, pain and suffer. great!
Bono said he selected Night and Day to sing as if he were the AIDS virus, obsessive and tormenting. Brilliant. One of the most beautiful songs ever written, but he found the dark side, for certain!
I remember listening to this when it was first released and loving it then. It's very dark and chilling scary almost. I'm not a U2 fan (Can't stand Bono sorry) but I do like a number of their songs this rendition is definitely one of them.
being familiar with this version, it's so funny to hear the older interpretations. they're all so light & sweet, so benign. u2 struck at the dark core of the song, which is about dangerous, all-consuming obsession. "this torment won't be through til you let me spend my life making love to you...". they knocked it out of the park. thanks for posting.
i absolutely hate u2, but this song breaks be down something horrible. it's too good an interpretation of cole porter's idea for the lyrics, but that's a good thing. really beautiful.
how come we never see this on TV, hear it on the radio, it gets no exposure....oh yeah, it has been overshadowed by the infamous crowdpleasers. pity, greatly underrated track.
i Still have the CD where this song is on and still when i hear this song,it takes me right in another dimension. The voice of Bono in this track hits me still everytime...raw,dark and so beautifull..perfect! and soooo clear where this cover of the original song was made for....."A benefit to Cole Porter to benefit AIDS research"...perfect song...perfect band....bravo!

U2 - Night and Day (Steel String Remix)
paddy9i99 1 year ago
U2 did a much better version than this, mixed by a third party, it is superb.

An interesting time for these fellas - still dressed in their Rattle & Hum duds - but very much sounding like a band about to make one of the greatest albums of all time - Achtung Baby! I remember watching this vid over and over as an obsessed 13 year-old - they made such a profound impression on me....

Pleasantly surprised. This version comes from a different point of interpretation; it is uncluttered man. It is raw energy.

PsychicHarvardGrad 1 year ago

The original version from Cole Porter is a love song, from U2, it's a song of passion. I love them both.
crevieri 1 year ago 22
Cole Porter wrote this song. He said it was about obsession not love. The other versions don't get that - this one does. Over the top, I could listen to it all day.
patriciajd1 1 year ago 37
True!
I'm not a huge fan of U2 - you have to listen to a lot of crap to occasionally find a good one - frustratingly, they have made some absolutely brilliant songs in amongst the rubbish, so I have to keep listening! But I know what you mean about this version hitting the mark when others haven't. Bono's an average singer but he delivers this one fantastically I have to say!
jennyrunkel 1 year ago
@patriciajd1 you;re right...this is a song about obsession...and I think what makes this version so great is that U2 captures the obsesion...the professions of love that border on blackness, vocals that drip desperation....simply amazing! It is from an album "Red Hot & Blue" It is a tribute to Porter...some great stuff on there!

I didn't like this when it started because of the drum sound, but holy shit it grows on you. The video's great, interesting as it was such a transitional period for them.

SKWalrus 2 years ago
@SKWalrus "I leaned back on my sofa and knew all was right with the world again". My feelings at the time exactly. I remember thinking if this is the new "dream" they're having..I'm ready to follow. Next song I heard was Actung's "The Fly" and the glorious revolution was upon us
WhoDoYouWant 1 year ago
I first heard/saw "The Fly" on a November 1991 Saturday mornig in Berlin, and I wasn't sure what to think of it. But after I heard it again almost the same time of day a week later, I couldn't get it out of my head. It's one of my all-time U2 favs. It's one of their most important tracks, and is perhaps why we still talk about U2 today. Until that moment, they'd had devolved into a joke punchline in many music circles. "The Fly/Achtung Baby" made them matter again. WATCH MORE TV!

I hope U2 plays this on the 2010 leg of the NLOTH tour.

I'm not a U2 fan (Can't stand Bono sorry) but I do like a number of their songs this rendition is definitely one of them.

lucaslmgv 2 years ago
being familiar with this version, it's so funny to hear the older interpretations. they're all so light & sweet, so benign. u2 struck at the dark core of the song, which is about dangerous, all-consuming obsession. "this torment won't be through til you let me spend my life making love to you...". they knocked it out of the park. thanks for posting.
