This lady is mother Africa and she will never ever be forgotten in my life. I will always play her music and dance to it in her memory. Rest in peace Ma Afica God Bless You!!!
I loved the strong, precise pata pata dance. My daughters and I tried it, but we could not make it look so smooth and effortless, no matter how many times we played the song. So much fun trying, though.
A great herone of the struggle against Apartheid South Africa.I grew up listenng to this great woman when she visited Lagos,Nigeria. These are the kind of South Africans that kept hope alive for South Africans all those years ago.
Wow! you posted this 3 yrs ago and its still going strong! Only shows how beautiful songs and artists stay with us! Thanks and also thank you for replying to my earlier question! Have a great day!
I love this song and this video!!! how awesome that a hit song like this could still inspire us and make us happy after so many years!!! I am hooked on this video!! I'm 57 yr old woman and remember this song from when i was young. Miriam always looked like she was enjoying her songs and happy, even after all she went thru in her persona life.

They're using this song in a TV ad. Unfortunately for them I pay attention to the song and forget the product. I heard her 3 times live in the 60s. Unforgettable. she redefined sexiness, elegance, inclusiveness, music itself. Still sounds great here. Thanks Rayner!
It kind of would be nice to know what the words are, but in another way I think it would take from the song : ) Have you heard the "Click" song she did? Its here on youtube, I think you'd get a kick from it! : )
I've always loved this song. Does anyone have a English translation of the words. I remember she was a guest on the Cosby Show. that was the first time I heard this song.
Thank you so much for uploading this, I have loved it since I was a little girl. I remember it playing on AM radio while riding in my dad's car and my parents bought her album and play it every time they put music on! I learned a little dance to this in Kindergarten and could never remember what it was called or exactly how it sounded. Thanks to that car commercial I remembered and found it! Yaaay! R.I.P. Miriam <3
Thankyou for posting this song! Yes I did hear it in the comercial for Honda but remember it from my childhood. My iPhone app identified the singer whom I've just about forgotten. Thank god for modern technology!
I heard this song through the years never knowing about the artist or song title. Today at ballet class the instructor played it again, and FINALLY i got the info from her Ipod ! Definately will be playing it in the classes i teach too, and i look forward to exploring more of this wonderful artists' work . :)
Same here. I heard this like 5-6 years ago in my music class in school and liked it but forgot about it untill the new car commercial usues it. I searched all over for the name and finally found it
what a proud grandmother. as i watched this i thought what a beautiful legacy miss makeba left her grand child. not only of music, but more importantly the freedoms in south africa she had a direct hand in bequeathing!
it was during an art class in a small new england town when i was probably a sophomore in high school that i was first introduced to the voice or mariam mekeba. i had never heard such sounds. i was awed & mesmerized.
our instructor, who was clearly ahead of his time played her music often for us. i'll never forget her & her music. she brings back memories of my period of discovery.
most of my contemporaries have never heard of mariam, but i've known & loved her since the early 60's
I remember when this song was on the TV show, "Las Vegas". I think it was in 2006 or 2007 and the episode was similar to "Double Down" or something like that. I searched ALL OVER to try to find the name of this song, but couldn't find it anywhere. Now out of the blue a few years later, it pops up on a new 2010 Honda commercial. Cool!
I heard this song for the first time on the Honda Crosstour commercial. I immediately looked it up and have been playing it ever since. It has the kind of sound that instantly brings me peace and puts a smile on my face.
Honda is using this song on one of their commercials.I heard it last weekend and was frustrated because I have been trying to figure what the song was. It used to come on tv in Nigeria when I was growing up. This song has been playing in my head for more than a year and then I heard it in the commercial.I came on you tube and found the commercial and was shocked to find out that Mama Africa sang it. It reminds me of when Nigeria was good and I had no problems besides what game I would play
they make everyone in my elementary n high school learn this dance i love it, it brings me back to being a kid in gym class! a classic beautiful song<3
bohnstube what are you talking about? Miriam and her family got ALL the royalties from her songs. She was especially successful in Europe. Where on earth do you get your information from?
I love this song , wow she looked young , didn't age a bit .Mama Africa will miss you , i hope you are singing Pata Pata to the Angels ,i am seeing them smiling .RIP.
yeah i saw the commercial the other day and had to find this song. i heard she just passed a couple years ago. is that true. if so she left us some lovely music to remember her by.
I'm really glad they put this song on that Accura commercial! I'd never heard the song before but this is awesome!!! Anyone know what language she's singing in, and what country or region its from?
Man, its moments like these that just make me so so sad.
To say that "modern" day music has not been influenced by African music is such a gross understatement. If you dispute that then just know there is a reason this low quality video has over a million views.
E' morta in Italia, ma in una terra ad altissima immigrazione africana, tra la sua gente. Era venuta ad una manifestazione contro lo sfruttamento, per la giustizia e la legalità. E' morta eroicamente.
Wonderful song from my childhood, very sad that Miriam Makeba and her family never saw nearly the amount of money from royalties that she should have during her storied career. A small part of the song has been brought back for at least the U.S. audience to remember in the form of the theme music to highlight the Honda Accord Crosstour automobile in their commercials.
We miss you Miriam! My heart goes out to your family one year after you departed. You have left a permanent and joyous imprint in my heart. Thank you for your music and your message.
Grazie pata pata. La ricorderò come ricorderò la tua venuta in Italia a Castellammare a cantare per quei ragazzi di colore barbaramente uccisi dalla camorra. Quasi un senso di colpa per non avercela fatta. Addio.
