It's actions like this that should have been highlighed during the campaign as it demonstrates Harper's view & treatment of our troops. They staged a photo-op & funding announcement to show support for our young men & women, yet had no intention keeping the promise. While in opposition, he urged the gov't to send our troops to Iraq, in an effort to:1. improve relations with the US & 2. be awarded contracts for the rebuilding of Iraq. He wanted to trade our troop for approval & money from the US.
@dwayners13 It's one of the most parasitic things this so-called government (hard to call it that since it's all under one strongman's thumb) has done in such photo-ops. But it's not surprising since none of those in government would ever face actual combat or answer why the Taliban are still resisting after 8 years of combat operations (three years longer than when Canada stood against the Third Reich).

@007nadineL I agree with the last statement you made. It is a disgrace to the memories of fallen soldiers that our Parliamentary democracy has become a government of one. In other countries, we call it a one-man state or one-party state and we all know how that turns out time and time again.
bullshit. try passing that opinion off at Queenston heights. think of 1812 as a Canadian victory that was won when we were still british, but still entirely Canadian
@CCNuck I'll tell you why. It was a ploy to get the polls up, making Canadians believe that the current government supports the troops. They also bet that the average you and me are so apathetic that we won't pay attention or remember it when another election comes.
This is a nice sentiment, and very 'hoo-rahh', and I agree with this in many respects, BUT it doesn't stop the CBC (for whom Rick works) from ALSO exploiting soldiers and the war with their 'Afghanada' propaganda. So, I find this rant slightly hypocritical.

Private users would be refunded the tax dollars spent the year prior on healthcare taxes. this way we wouldn't have to adjust federal everyday spending. it would just be return at the beginning of each fiscal year.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
if a private user were to use the public system out of emergency they would be billed appropriately, as not to cheat the taxpayer. at anytime you could switch from one system to the other but every year (on your tax returns) you would provide your intentions for heathcare preferences for the upcoming year.

if you go public then you would pay as normal. a small percentage would be put onto private users (0.5-1% tax) to aid the public system and continue its development but would mainly be funded by public users. this would lower our federal taxes and lessen the strain our hospitals are under trying to service everyone at once.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Canada should have two-tier health services. public, for people who can't afford otherwise or choose to use it and private for everyone else. everyone that uses public will fund it the same way it's done today. while, anyone who uses private would cover their costs separately. every year on your tax returns you would check what system of healthcare you intended on using. if you choose to opt for private care your taxes will be refunded back to you at the beginning of tax return season.
@1michelemichele1 No. Universal is not fine. Its very far from fine. WTF do you know about healthcare!?? I've had both of my parents in hospital and one of them died. I'm from a privedged family that could have provided better if we wern't forced into Canadas mediocre free-for-all pisspot of a system. so fuck you with your bullshit insight about nothing. you have absolutely no knowledge on the subject and have no thoughts of your own. Universal is not alright
@hoodedfang My views are mine and mine alone. these ideas are original and would work excellent without neglecting any of the luxurys we as Canadians enjoy today. your just to fucking stupid to read what i've said and just assume it means privitizing healthcare. even Harper would be impressed with my plan and yes, i'd be proud if he was.
Quit your lieing landrecce the amount of GDP/GNP spent on health care is 11 1/2 percent. The US is 17 percent highest in the world.
RM is right here, and of course the announcement was strategically made on a Friday. landreece and Peter and Steve are shameless. Obsfuscate, deflect, manipulate and lie. We know what Steve and Jim are gonna do in the upcoming budget. Its been the plan from the beginning. Gut and privatize everything, including the Military and Healthcare.
@ugvug Steve and Jim are the elite now, despite all their spin claiming their ordinary. If such an announcement came in the middle of the week with every major media outlet discussing it, the gov't would be spinning more than a top.

@klo00100 no it isn't, not if you have the money. Canada should have both, public and private (just like education). nobody should be limited to mediocritie if they can afford better, thats communist.
kidkappa04, more money spent on healthcare doesnt mean better healthcare. plenty of studies - done in the US no less - expose this fact. Education recognizes this too. Intelligence isn't baded on how much money a family has hoarded. Universities and governments provide funding, knowing the vast majority of high score students do not come from wealthy backgrounds. Leave ti to just the wealthy and university will be full of mediocre students. Want private police too? Everything has exceptions.

@TheDorkOfEarl hospitals that deal with their finances directly can decide on their own what to do with finances. whether that be more staff, more equipment or new medicines and vaccines. if somebody has worked themselves into a position to provide better healthcare at their own expense...it should'nt even be a topic for public discussion how rediculous this sounds coming from a Canadian. It should be allowed.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
@TheDorkOfEarl nobody should be limited in this country to accepting mediocritie when they themselves can provide better. that is horribly, extremely, unequalvically wrong. and also communist...

@hoodedfang forcing somebody into a situation where they could personally provide otherwise is communist. do some research instead of shooting off little quips you have no personal insight on
No, the Canadian system is not communist, since the hospitals and doctors do not directly work for the government. They are merely remunerated by the government, much like private health insurance would, at a set rate, much like private health insurance would. Sounds to me like your some sort of elitist fascist, since you believe only those on the top deserve the best pay.
not at all. I just believe we should be left to our own accord in ordder to lower personal taxes. the public system would remain for the people who need it (funded by their tax dollars exactly how it is today) and private for those who can afford private. Tax refunds would be refunded to private users every year on their tax returns. its to complex to restructure the GST.
@klo00100 About the same amount of time it takes for a fully insured person to get the surgery. The only difference is money and the ability to pay...which is totally independent of the failure of the system.
@LivesForJihad All our healthcare requires is higher spending, to buy more equipment. Also a overhaul on the way doctors work. 6 month wait for an MRI scan? Well maybe if they didn't go on a 45 minute coffee break between scans it would be shorter.
