At 7:32 Qg5 f5 how about p*p en pessant? Doesn't that destroy black's position?
a6 isn't a completely atrocious opening, it just changes the move order somewhat from a normal queenside fiancetto and obviously loses the opportunity to kick a piece on b5 for tempo.
He is showing potential other lines that the game might have followed, had Karpov or Miles chosen other routes. In chess notation, it's usually written (...like this, in parentheses, with such descriptions inset into the...) 'main' course of the actual game moves, and analyses thereof.
@vagnard77 You seem to have forgotten that white is already down a piece! So after Nxf8 Rxf8, black has 2 bishops for a rook and 2 pawns and it is by no means a clear win. According to Miles, Karpov thought for half an hour before deciding not to play 19.Bxh7+. I guess he correctly found no clear win and decided to play on to build an advantage. But in hindsight, he may as well have made that premature sacrifice.
It is absolutely wrong and pretentious to criticise the popular pronunciation used outside of Southern Europe because it is the prerogative of an English speaker to pronounce a foreign word in an English way; in the English-speaking world, go ahead and say it naturally: "fee an cheh toe."
it's not wrong or pretentious to criticize. It's a matter of courtesy that you should make the effort, the same way that english-speaking people love to correct the rest of the world's pronunciation. It's not a big ask, after all.
Lol the Birmingham defence rocks! Theres actually even a book out on the opening (Think its called the St George defence in that though). Theres little advantage in playing a6 though, it was all psychological I certainly wouldnt recommend playing it at club level!
Can anybody upload the T.V. serial "The Master Game" which was on the B.B.C. between 1975 and perhaps the early '80's>? It was BRILLIANT! Tony Miles was one of the contestants if I remember and it was presented by Jeremy James and Bill Hartston
Quite ironic that the most important part of one's life is one particular game of chess...similar to when jon penrose whipped up on Tal using the Benoni. I once drew Arnold Denker when he was in his early seventies...my most memorable chess game..but I won't be remembered for anything.. RIP Tony Miles
hi, some moves were too fast for beginners such as I. as another viewer pointed out, the initial commentary (doodling!?) can be omitted. I do appreciate you taking the time to post and present your commentary, I have followed your videos and learnt quite a bit, just a bit disappointed that your effort to share this with everyone wasnt as effective as your other videos. needless to say, good work, please keep the videos and your enthusiasm coming. Thanks!
RIP Tony Miles, sad loss to the Chess world -- not always the nicest man (He positively hated fellow English GM Raymond Keene -- sometimes justifiably as Keene can be quite pompous) But at his prime, he was a genius on the Chess bored.

It is so easy to decide that an unorthodox opening must be pushed off the board and then overextend oneself.

No, it's from Italian and fianchetto means "little wing". It's absolutely pronounced "fee-an-ke-toe and any other pronunciation is plain wrong.

At 7:46 I don't think h3 is good for white. They can simply check Ne6 and win the exchange.

Yeah! The late Tony Miles, my countryman. He used to visit a club quite local to me. Warley Quimbourne in the Midlands.

FRENCCETTO RULES, and he was quite smart to do so by catching karpov off his chair by doing something so unorthodox. LOL KLASSIK.

Bit too much waffling on at the beginning, which cost you time to talk about the end game, but more of less a good analysis of a great game :-)
