Beautiful possum and cats! I am so glad you are feeding them . . . worry that the possum might want to have one of the cats for a meal? Someone told me that they eat cats! Well, this is sure a lovely video and I appreciate you sharing it.
@doltbezoar They don't eat cats, but they will eat a variety of foods
In the wild, they eat young shoots, leaves, flowers, nectar and fruit of a variety of trees and shrubs. They also feed on insects. They do not eat fish.
They tend to scavenge and have been known to eat pet foods.
@maynardcat They will definitely eat cat food if left outside. They also love avocados! We had a huge avocado tree for years until it became so large we had to take it down. We had a lot of them around here at that time.
I had an Opossum that got locked in my trash can on a hot weekend for two days, when I went to toss trash after two days I saw the poor thing, got out my thick leather gloves, cooled it down with a nice bath, gave it a flea dip (poor thing was covered in fleas) and then took it out to a field where there were no buildings and sat with it til it recovered and then trotted away. I think they are amazing! Hubby also came across 6 babies clinging to dead mom on road, gave them to a rehabilitator
well i l;ive inbrooklyn ny city and for a while my dogs would run out in the back yard i was thinking a cat ... but last week i have a foster dog with me and they all went out at night and i could not get this dog to come in i went to get a light than i seen it sorry but it was to late i fell so bad but i was a possum that tis dog had killed .. i am sorry ...... we all went in next day i went to dig a hole but it was gone could it have been playing dead ?????
how do i get the one that came into my house last night back outside without scaring it to death? I think they are really great creatures, but it would be best if it went back outside. I have no clue where it is at the moment, as it is daylight and in hiding. maybe it's in the garage?
@lastnamehave I've never had one in the house, but I did have one hiding in a cat house that was difficult to get out. If it is in the garage just leave the door cracked at night and he should escape.
@lastnamehave You wont scae it to death! They play dead :p If you ge close to him again and he plays dead, you can grab him (firmly) by the base of the tale and take him ouside ;)
aww when I had outdoor cats we would leave cat food out and the local Opossum would visit and snack on their dinner :) I always loved watching him, sooo cute !
@topsy420 rabies is quite rare from domesticated pets (dogs, cats, etc) as they are all vaccinated these days...wild bats carry rabies ...but that is very rare...still...(I've been bitten by dogs and cats , raccoons.)
Not only is it America's sole marsupial, but the opossum must surely be a contender for the world's ugliest marsupial. Only the Tasmanian devil would rival it for sheer ugliness.
Possums are North America's ONLY Marsupial, like a kangaroo. They carry their young in a pouch until old enough to fend for themselves. They eat Spiders, bugs & RATS, along with other creepie crawlies. As Mammals, their body temperature is too LOW to get Rabies & they are FRIENDS to home owners who don't have to use pesticides with them around. People are IDIOTS who don't realize that Possums are Beneficial Animals for homeowners.
@kenreuel HEY MAN I WOKE I FOUND MY PARROT MISSING HIS HEAD AND THE CAGE WAS COVERED WITH A BLANKET AND I HAVE 3 CATS AND A DOG, BUT THEY NEVER MESS WITH HIM, DO YOU THINK A POSSUM IS CAPABLE OF RIPPING A PRETTY BIG PARROTS HEAD OFF CLEAN?
@kenreuel HEY MAN I WOKE I FOUND MY PARROT MISSING HIS HEAD AND THE CAGE WAS COVERED WITH A BLANKET AND I HAVE 3 CATS AND A DOG, BUT THEY NEVER MESS WITH HIM, DO YOU THINK A POSSUM IS CAPABLE OF RIPPING A PRETTY BIG PARROTS HEAD OFF CLEAN?
I guess they are just heartless people. Yes, I remember Jeffrey Dahmer; my friend was in Milwaukee in college at Marquette University at the time and lived not far from him. I still think it would be great if someone gave these people justice/locked them up for a long time for doing these things.
The thing that I've noticed about the people that kill them(Opossums) and torture them is that they all seem to be "white trash". They are disgusting, dirty and not educated....people like that are scary and dangerous.
@mugs689 Well you may have a point there, but I can't comment on which races might be more guilty of the evil deeds, as I just don't know. They have said that people that kill and torture animals move on to humans for a bigger thrill. Remember Jeffrey Dahlmer, he started out that way, and some others as well.
Very nice video!! We also love animals.....we should unite against the disgusting people that kill, torture and terrorize these creatures for no reason. We had an Opossum that showed up every night for his dinner for over a year...last time we saw him was Christmas; we heard that they only live 3 years, so he must have passed on. We get so much joy out of sitting on our patio with a nice glass of wine, and watching the animals that come out of the forest at dusk. God bless people like you!
@mugs689 There are a lot of people that hate possums, and try to kill them. There was a guy at work who lived on a farm, and said he killed every possum he could. He couldn't understand me feeding and taking care of one. Another guy who lived in the city trapped a possum, while laughing said he didn't know what to do with it so he drowned it in the swimming pool. I told him that was a stupid thing to do, why not turn it loose in the woods or take it to a wild life rescue center
@MrGranthill33 i have 2 cats, and they are very loyal, they come when called, they are VERY smart, and all animals kill, it is instinct, no matter how trained, i also have 2 very loyal and smart dogs who play and love my cats
@MrGranthill33 Sorry you are wrong, many cats are very loyal pets, and intelligent animals. They kill because nature created them that way for their survival in the wild This you also got this wrong, it's not animals that are cold blood killers, that is a characteristic more likely to be found in some humans, they are the real uniintelligent cold blooded killers, not the animals.
@MrGranthill33 You wouldn't say that if you had the intelligence to hold a relationship with one. They are harder to train for a reason. They have lived with us longer than any other mammal, including rats, and sorta domesticated themselves btw. Unless that piece of study has been updated in the last few years then I am right. When's the last time you died saving a dog from a burning building? I wouldn't expect any intelligent species to do that for me or you.
Almost everyone I have ever met that didn't like cats were either never really around them and only believed they were bad or just happened to be those selfish, self-centered, controlling types. They're always like, "It won't do what I tell it." Of course he or she won't. They aren't it's nor do they care if you accept it. Remind you of someone?
I cant understand why so many people dont like cats. I think they are very beautiful animals and if they were rare everybody would want one. But because we are lucky enough that they have adapted to our environment and now they're are many we take them for granted. Bless you for caring about them..and the possum!
Good for you, I applaud your kind efforts. We need more kindness in this world. From the looks, and based on what I have observed, looks to be a female possum. so you may end up with more of them later..
When I was visiting my dad and step-mom 3 baby possums climbed up the toilet through a break in the septic line. I think I was very cal when I found them in the morning. I didn't scream and took the little guys in a net one at a time and gave them a bath with the hose (it was july so it didn't bother them) and carried them to a wooded area by a creek near the house. They hissed but never bit me.
Thank you for your compassion! Reading some of the comments really makes me question whether or not our species deserves this earth. We need more people like you who respect and care for the earth and all its creatures.
HI rrrina Thanks for the nice comment I agree with you, and I do respect all living things, and help them out if I can. I am surprised at how many people hate possums for no reason.
Thanks, maynardcat. Our species desperately needs to evolve. In the meantime, I try to educate people whenever possible. I think everyone (except maybe psycho/sociopaths) has some compassion. The trick is to excavate it and nurture it. By watching positive videos (like yours) of opossum and other animals, hopefully, people will learn.
A guy I worked with had a possum as a pet. When it was small he use to carry it around inside his coat. Possums are not mean or aggressive like raccoons. They do hiss when cornered, but usually try to play dead as a defense or as the old saying goes, Play possum.
Possums are not mean or carriers of rabies as some ignorant ppl have stated. In fact they are highly resistant to rabies.
I wouldn't have one as a pet though since they need a large range of territory to cover and will get into anything. They are also much cuter when young. And the tail is disturbing lol.
