@MrSp00nerism he targets new york because new york city is also the cuture mecca of the world people from all walks of life every country live in new york attacking new york was also like attacking the world
he's not a villain, he gave the world a common enemy, uniting them and thus saving humanity from annihilating itself through nuclear war. He killed alot of people but saved many many more and future generations.
@orange3023 Not only that, but it's possible to emphasise with him - he honestly believes he's saving the world. My biggest gripe with the movie is that he is portrayed as less remorseful and more cynical than the comic.
@EarthTremor I hope you don't mind me bombarding you with my opinion, but I love the way they portrayed Veidt in the movie. He's colder and more distant, but to me, he's not less remorseful. He still makes himself feel every death. But in the comic it is followed by something like "I imagine their faces. By night I dream about...Never mind. What's significant is that I know." In the movie, Veidt knows he doesn't have to say that, because he's the smartest man in the world. That suits him better.
You guys get that in destroying NYcity and other major cities and framing Dr. Manhattan (or non-existent aliens) for that thereby stopping WWIII he SAVES THE WORLD right?
Lol. He did this to prevent a thrid world war, but each of those cities destroyed had so many people in them that the casualties combined ay not have been so far off from what a thrid world war would have caused.
its an alternate timeline. nuclear war really was imminent. Adrian killed millions in a direct attack at the worlds biggest cities. nukes would have hit everything from communications to military to factories to civilian centres in that order as missile exchanges increase. resulting fallout would encompass the globe wiping out farming and future restoration. Adrian practically built the world with his bombs. The technology behind them fuelled a golden age with endless resources
@Darklarik Well, the point of Watchmen is to create an alternate universe where we find is still in the middle of a full scale Cold War, plus there would have been far more catastrophic consequences if there would have been a nuclear war than this. If a nuclear winter occured all life on earth would be virtually extinct, while here we still have the death's of thousands, but at last an (temporary?) worldpeace. I don't share Adrian's view, but I merely object your idea that his plan is imbecile
@thaillidan he targeted the world main cities, killing millions, perhaps even more than a billion people. And i still dont think Russia and the USA would be stupid enough to condem the earth over petty differences
@Darklarik True, but the Watchmen universe isn't our universe. Our universe doesn't have superbeings like Dr Manhattan in it. Remember Jon himself was a major cause of escalation between the West and the Soviets - a weapon that there could be few answers for. In many ways Jon IS the cause of the devastation that Veidt unleashes upon the world.
I like how he pretty much launched this attack long before they ever got to him (Okay, well, 35 minutes at least). KInda slaps all those other things where the villain states his plans and then gets his ass kicked and nothing happens. Here the villain states his plans, gets his ass kicked, and manages to go through with his plans.
@Clonehunter1 It works even better in the comic because behind him is a giant picture of Alexander the Great cutting the knot, and conquering the world. "I did it 35 minutes ago," I possibly my favorite line of all time.
The main reason I disliked the squid ending is because from the begininng you can tell the watchmen isn't some 12 year old's comic with superpowers and monsters, but the alien comes out of nowhere, and just doesn't really fit in with the rest of the realistic plot. This ending also gives a more justified reason for Manhattan to leave Earth.
@jameshong89 ???????? THIS ENDING IS WAY BETTER.NO ONE WOULD BELIVE THAT ALIEN BULLSHIT ,AND ALL WHAT HIS PLAN NEEDS IS THAT MANHATHAN COMES BACK SOME TIMES AND ATK SAML PLACES
@rafaelfmolina Actually... the squid ending is the better, more logical scenario. If the source of the attack is man-made... the 2 powers will just blame each other & start a war instead of ending one. The idea is to have a common unknowable enemy... even if the 2 superpowers don't work together, there would at least halt hostility.
The movie is still great... the perfect example of what superhero movie should be.
@BioCapsule I think the Manhattan-ending is the more believable one, I always found the squid to be, well, pretty damn absurd. But I don't know how it's done in the movie, because I haven't it seen yet, I just know the comic.
???????? THIS ENDING IS WAY BETTER.NO ONE WOULD BELIVE THAT ALIEN BULLSHIT ,AND ALL WHAT HIS PLAN NEEDS IS THAT MANHATHAN COMES BACK SOME TIMES AND ATK SMALL PLACES
@ZombieN00bs The squid was the "outside" power that would threaten humanity and would unite the world not as a nation, but as a species. Vedit hired artists, geneticist and psychics to basically create the ultimate creature of horror. He used the matter transporter to teleport the creature in. The teleporter had the flaw that it would kill whatever it teleported, but vedit used it's deathroe as a psychic catalyst. New york gets destroyed basically due to a creature psychicly screaming in death
What's interesting is this is, really, the only way there can ever be a 'united' human race- i.e. a common enemy or threat so great that humanity's very survival is at stake.
@mrtoontown Ronald Reagan said at the UN once that "sometimes i think about our quickly our differences world wide would vanish if we were facing an alien threat from outside this world." Sadly yes... this would be the only way our world would unite... a cataclysmic event from something that threatens each and every single human being.
@RyLegacy If Rorschach revealed the truth it actually wouldn't have changed the new world peace. Instead of being united against fake aliens, the world would be united against the monolithic Veidt. That would be a good ending.
@MadPutz If Rorchach survived and revealed that Adrian was behind it all, then yes for a period of time the world would be united against Veidt. However once he would be killed or captured, most likely the world could have fallen into chaos again. However, with blame being put on Dr. Manhattan, the idea there was that Dr Manahattan, a being soo powerful he is practically God, is non stop watching over the human race and that he could decimate us in an instant. That fear would bring about peace
As much as I liked the movie,I REALLY wanted to see---as in the original graphic novel--- the colossal corpse of Adrian's massive-brained,one-eyed,beak-mawed creature, its massive weight crushing the building, its tentacles half-buried in the asphalt, and hundreds upon hundreds of dead New Yorkers lying on the ground, their heads pooled in blood.
Three things to point-out: 1)It was Just Half of New York 2)This plot in which Jon helps to make those things makes no sense, why didn't he ever asked what Viedt was asking him to make? 3)I wanted MY SQUID, and the thing that killed HALF New York was supposed to be some psychic shock wave, not something that evaporates everything!
just an extra troll you cant KILL New York "Dahh!"
@fsfsfsfsfsfsg To answer number 2 Jon knew what Adrian was making a device that could simulate Jon's powers only Adrian used it as a weapon instead of as energy.
@demiser21 No he didn't "Takyons" (or how ever its spelled) blocked his vision of the future, and in the NOVEL (that to begin with is the original story) he wasn't even working for him, Adrian had an island (the one comedian mentions) in which he had scientist and stuff that worked for him thinking they were making a movie, they helped him create the Squid and a machine to teleport it to New York,
@fsfsfsfsfsfsg Jon KNEW what he was making (device to simulate his powers) in the movie what he DIDN'T know is what it would do. Think of it like this you can use nuclear energy to power things or it can be destructive. This was explained in the movie that's why the oil company people came to see him they, like Jon, thought he was creating an energy resource. But instead we got Chernobyls powered by Dr. Manhattan.
"Daddy,whats that big blue light?""What blue li..oh god,Lian.Grab daddys hand,we need to leave,now!Dear god what the hell...oh god,its...its gone..wha...OH DEAR GO..
......................but it was all for the best!;D
@Megablueforce it must look awfully suspicius to the people living in NY, every film or book that has a disaster in it will at some point show newyork getting trashed, it almost seems like america is secretley hoping to wake up tommorow and find NY gone..
@0:29, that represents the doomsday clock, look that up. Lots of scary stuff in this movie that is all true but disguised under the name "animation, entertainment, novel" etc.
I don't hate this new ending, but I'm not the biggest fan.
Dr Manhattan has been flaunted as America's WEAPON throughout his existance -- they've used it to intimidate other countries. When AMERICA'S WEAPON - their pride and joy, the one they put their trust in and threatened other countries with - goes rogue and destroys every major city, surely you would still blame America?
I know I would...
(That being said, I concede that mainstream audiences would never accept the original ending.)
@BarottenGarden And the squid would make no sense without all the details of the missing writers, the island and possibly wouln't make sense without the black freighter, so to fit everything in I think this ending worked.
@BarottenGarden If Veidt had only bombed Russia, then the US wouldv'e been blamed. By attacking cities all over the world however, including New York, America couldn't be blamed, as any human attempting to understand the situation would assume fairly that Manhattan no longer had any allegiances. Such a variety of targets suggests an attack on all humankind, rather than any specific faction of it. It wouldn't be fair to blame America for his going rogue either, as he was created by accident.
This sounds odd, but the squid made more sense to me. Why have stationed attacks all across the world, which ended up leading to the question of "How does nobody notice this, considering how poor the ruse was?" The alien, however, was so random and unquestionable that it effected the world without adding onto the death ratio. The more people dead, the less the plan makes sense. If only New York is destroyed, that's a lot of people, but little enough to still say that it's worth it.
So all those scientists helped in putting together monitors labelled 'London', 'Paris', 'Beijing', 'Moscow' and 'New York' - each with a great big fucking countdown timer underneath - and not a single one thought to question Adrian Veidt about what he was actually doing?
The 'Squid Enterprises' sticker on the console was a nice little visual reference.
@JimmyColls well wen ur dealing with a machine made by Dr. Manhatten chances are ur not gonna know wtf it is but its gonna be good and Adrian is the smartest man on earth so you would kinda trust him to help when he says he is gonna make engergy consumption enviromentaly friendly,
@JimmyColls Being the most intelligent man on the planet I think he would be very capable of producing a fabrication which would sufficiently deceive the other scientists.
@JimmyColls They were timers for when to send each Energy generator to each city one at a time. They thought they were making free energy for the world, but Veidt was using them as bombs.
@JimmyColls Yeah that plot doesn't makes sense here, I mean even Dr. Manhattan was supposed to be working with him, and he never asked him what he was doing xD! But in the Novel, it was in an Island with scientists actors cartoonists, etc, he tricked them telling them it was all for a movie, and he only attacked Moscow and Half New York, explaining that when he teleported stuff (like the Squid) it created a massive psychic explosion!
@fsfsfsfsfsfsg actuly i just re read the novel...there are eight power grids that dr manhattan senses....one being in newyork...the power grid was the squids...there wher 8
@XstormheartX but in the Novel he says his future is being blocked, meaning that in new york and Karnak his future was obstructed by "takyons", in new york because of the squids Psychic explosion and karnak because of the waves Adrian had in his lab and was using on purpose
@fsfsfsfsfsfsg yes but sensing things and his being able to see the future are two different things...and actuly i think there are 7 squids because he says the 8th is in the south pole....he destroys 7 places the tachyons only keep him from seeing the future
@XstormheartX this ""fight"" is about how many "squids!" where there in the Novel?! damn this is stupid!" well to begin with I know, but I didn't really knew (or cared much) about how many squids Veidt sends, although I realize it is relevant to faking the alien attack, but its stupid to fight about this, I only do imply that the Squid ending is better and the Novel rules!
@demiser21 That's more than likely the case though. Veidt was an arrogant snob, I mean he saw himself as akin to Alexander the Great, I doubt that he would want to "lower himself" by getting his hands dirty in the construction of his own temple (Karnak).
@JimmyColls yeah you could very well be right but since he was the smartest man on the planet and was working with the scientists to build the device it seems he could have built the monitoring system.
@JimmyColls veidt was not an arrogant snob...in the novel he was a saint...thats why no one suspected him for the murder of the comedian...no one thought he was capable...if he was so arrogant then why did his plan work?
if he was a snob then why (in the novel) did he bring veitnamese refugese into his home to help him ? .... he made everything from nothing he deserves to be proud...and alexander was his idol...he tried to be like him
as well as ramesses II and i think he did help build karnak
@JimmyColls There are jobs that have similar set-ups. I've worked in one, and it didn't involve destroying anything. One such set up is a power-grid at a plant, and considering Veidt was lying to them about working on a renewable energy that he was going to give the world, why would you suspect it as anything less? Also? It's a movie... About a comic book, so there's that too. Shut up and suspend disbelief. :P lol
"My Veidt, I hit a button and a big target started flashing over all the world's major cities and that giant countdown timer started ticking down. Is that normal?"
"It's a bug. Ignore it"
"Ok. The guy from the kitchen also wanted to confirm that you want 5 grams of cyanide in our champagne, not 10."
@JimmyColls Posted 8 months ago so you probably don't care, but the scientists probably thought the countdown was for initializing the Manhattan generators, which would supply cheap energy to said cities, an event indeed worthy of ceremony. Ozy kept his promise, but they surely didn't expect all the energy all at once.
@JimmyColls Well, I believe his "official" purpose for harnessing Doctor Manhattan's energy was to bring free energy into the world (scene with the businessmen and the following assassination explains this) and so it'd make sense that he'd want to "monitor" the progress of them or for maintenance purposes.
@JimmyColls Dawg, they were getting paid. Even if they knew, I think money was an overall factor in sweeping feelings of compassion for your fellow man under the rug. Plus it's one of the main themes in this graphic novel
90 Snazzes on the 100 point Snazz-o-Scale. Supersnazz!
-An AWESOME movie and an even better comic. (Go read it!) Spiffy FX and the movie mirrors the comic scene by scene, word by word sometimes. Which I loved!
-But I missed the alien at the end of the comic. I would have loved to have seen NYC a ruined city with hundreds of corpses in it, dripping blood, starring vacant, instead of one great crater. I think that would have been nastier and scarier, so to scare the world into peace.
I like this film. It stayed pretty true to the comic book series except the ending. I prefer the film ending rather than the comic book ending. In the comic book, Adrian created a fake alien invasion as a way to unite all the countries. This ending is much more dramatic and it ties the story and characters together.
@mrtokyofrank - Did you note that the movie gives a nod to the big ol' alien with the Teleportation Computers? You can see a sign called SQUID on them around :05, "SQUID Energizing." But I don't think they ever say what SQUID means! Still, nice touch.
So let me get this straight. Adrian manipulated a power similar to that of Dr. Manhattan in order to destroy New York. Then, Rorschach left so that he could tell people what really happened, all the while just leaving Adrian to do whatever the Hell he wanted. Outside, Rorschach confronts Manhattan who then kills him because he was going to tell people the truth. The only person who showed any kind of emotion was Eddie. Afterwards, people say that there's peace and everything's just fine.
yeah man...watchmen is actually a really deep work of literature, i wrote a huge paper on it in school. this movies is faithful to the book in terms of action, dialogue and events being very close, except for the most important part: the ending. its a shame that average people cant understand the real version of the story....its obvius that is why they avoided the monster ending
@tenkenroo would you prefer it to be seen in real time and miss all the detailed cool shit that happens? you get to see more of the destrution if its slow :P
@ash9999 Nah it made total sense. Adrian was shown through most of the comic experimenting with genetic splicing . Also it makes way more sense then doctor manhatten as the threat for a couple of reasons.
1. Dr manhatten leaves, so no threat means no peace.
2. The squid alien is an external threat outside of earth and helps people realize that the earth is very tiny and our meager squabbles are holding back our survival in the universe

Manhattan.

BarottenGarden 1 year ago
@BarottenGarden And the squid would make no sense without all the details of the missing writers, the island and possibly wouln't make sense without the black freighter, so to fit everything in I think this ending worked.
westcountrypromotor 1 year ago 4
@BarottenGarden If Veidt had only bombed Russia, then the US wouldv'e been blamed. By attacking cities all over the world however, including New York, America couldn't be blamed, as any human attempting to understand the situation would assume fairly that Manhattan no longer had any allegiances. Such a variety of targets suggests an attack on all humankind, rather than any specific faction of it. It wouldn't be fair to blame America for his going rogue either, as he was created by accident.
Walkingcompilation 1 year ago
This sounds odd, but the squid made more sense to me. Why have stationed attacks all across the world, which ended up leading to the question of "How does nobody notice this, considering how poor the ruse was?" The alien, however, was so random and unquestionable that it effected the world without adding onto the death ratio. The more people dead, the less the plan makes sense. If only New York is destroyed, that's a lot of people, but little enough to still say that it's worth it.
Nanaman12345 1 year ago
So all those scientists helped in putting together monitors labelled 'London', 'Paris', 'Beijing', 'Moscow' and 'New York' - each with a great big fucking countdown timer underneath - and not a single one thought to question Adrian Veidt about what he was actually doing?
The 'Squid Enterprises' sticker on the console was a nice little visual reference.
JimmyColls 1 year ago 96
@JimmyColls well wen ur dealing with a machine made by Dr. Manhatten chances are ur not gonna know wtf it is but its gonna be good and Adrian is the smartest man on earth so you would kinda trust him to help when he says he is gonna make engergy consumption enviromentaly friendly,
24134 1 year ago
@JimmyColls Being the most intelligent man on the planet I think he would be very capable of producing a fabrication which would sufficiently deceive the other scientists.
royalpanthera7 1 year ago
@JimmyColls They were timers for when to send each Energy generator to each city one at a time. They thought they were making free energy for the world, but Veidt was using them as bombs.
hazza3 1 year ago
@JimmyColls Yeah that plot doesn't makes sense here, I mean even Dr. Manhattan was supposed to be working with him, and he never asked him what he was doing xD! But in the Novel, it was in an Island with scientists actors cartoonists, etc, he tricked them telling them it was all for a movie, and he only attacked Moscow and Half New York, explaining that when he teleported stuff (like the Squid) it created a massive psychic explosion!
fsfsfsfsfsfsg 1 year ago
@fsfsfsfsfsfsg actuly i just re read the novel...there are eight power grids that dr manhattan senses....one being in newyork...the power grid was the squids...there wher 8
XstormheartX 11 months ago
@XstormheartX but in the Novel he says his future is being blocked, meaning that in new york and Karnak his future was obstructed by "takyons", in new york because of the squids Psychic explosion and karnak because of the waves Adrian had in his lab and was using on purpose
fsfsfsfsfsfsg 11 months ago
@fsfsfsfsfsfsg yes but sensing things and his being able to see the future are two different things...and actuly i think there are 7 squids because he says the 8th is in the south pole....he destroys 7 places the tachyons only keep him from seeing the future
and it is tachyons not takyons
XstormheartX 11 months ago
@XstormheartX this ""fight"" is about how many "squids!" where there in the Novel?! damn this is stupid!" well to begin with I know, but I didn't really knew (or cared much) about how many squids Veidt sends, although I realize it is relevant to faking the alien attack, but its stupid to fight about this, I only do imply that the Squid ending is better and the Novel rules!
fsfsfsfsfsfsg 11 months ago
@JimmyColls Your making assumptions that the Scientists put the monitors together
demiser21 11 months ago
@demiser21 That's more than likely the case though. Veidt was an arrogant snob, I mean he saw himself as akin to Alexander the Great, I doubt that he would want to "lower himself" by getting his hands dirty in the construction of his own temple (Karnak).
JimmyColls 11 months ago
@JimmyColls yeah you could very well be right but since he was the smartest man on the planet and was working with the scientists to build the device it seems he could have built the monitoring system.
demiser21 11 months ago
@JimmyColls veidt was not an arrogant snob...in the novel he was a saint...thats why no one suspected him for the murder of the comedian...no one thought he was capable...if he was so arrogant then why did his plan work?
if he was a snob then why (in the novel) did he bring veitnamese refugese into his home to help him ? .... he made everything from nothing he deserves to be proud...and alexander was his idol...he tried to be like him
as well as ramesses II and i think he did help build karnak
XstormheartX 11 months ago
@JimmyColls There are jobs that have similar set-ups. I've worked in one, and it didn't involve destroying anything. One such set up is a power-grid at a plant, and considering Veidt was lying to them about working on a renewable energy that he was going to give the world, why would you suspect it as anything less? Also? It's a movie... About a comic book, so there's that too. Shut up and suspend disbelief. :P lol
magog1138 11 months ago
@JimmyColls maybe they thought he was building some world clocks so he could tell the time of any place lol
nameless12345 11 months ago
@JimmyColls Adrian Veidt was smart -- he could have written the software himself without other scientists' help.
ThomasJAckerman 10 months ago
@JimmyColls
"Either is fine"
salamirterra 9 months ago
@JimmyColls well it was supposed to be a generator beaming power right to those cities, the countdown could have displayed anything.
cthulhlu 8 months ago
@JimmyColls Posted 8 months ago so you probably don't care, but the scientists probably thought the countdown was for initializing the Manhattan generators, which would supply cheap energy to said cities, an event indeed worthy of ceremony. Ozy kept his promise, but they surely didn't expect all the energy all at once.
hisnameisfrankie 8 months ago
@JimmyColls Well, I believe his "official" purpose for harnessing Doctor Manhattan's energy was to bring free energy into the world (scene with the businessmen and the following assassination explains this) and so it'd make sense that he'd want to "monitor" the progress of them or for maintenance purposes.
TristanHaney1 7 months ago

TheRadical42 1 year ago
I like this film. It stayed pretty true to the comic book series except the ending. I prefer the film ending rather than the comic book ending. In the comic book, Adrian created a fake alien invasion as a way to unite all the countries. This ending is much more dramatic and it ties the story and characters together.
mrtokyofrank 1 year ago
@mrtokyofrank - Did you note that the movie gives a nod to the big ol' alien with the Teleportation Computers? You can see a sign called SQUID on them around :05, "SQUID Energizing." But I don't think they ever say what SQUID means! Still, nice touch.
-But I prefered the Alien in the comic.

He didn't just destroy New York - he destroyed every major city on the planet. London, Tokyo, Moscow, Paris, etc.
It was the Cold War - the US and Russia were preparing to nuke the fuck out of each other.
When WHAM, suddenly both of them, along with every other nation, have one common enemy stronger than all of them put together: Dr. Manhattan.
The shock and fear of "his" attack causes them to come together, to prevent it happening again.
It was explained.

The squid didn't make sense in the graphic novel it was like a wtf? moment
ash9999 1 year ago
@ash9999 Nah it made total sense. Adrian was shown through most of the comic experimenting with genetic splicing . Also it makes way more sense then doctor manhatten as the threat for a couple of reasons.
1. Dr manhatten leaves, so no threat means no peace.
2. The squid alien is an external threat outside of earth and helps people realize that the earth is very tiny and our meager squabbles are holding back our survival in the universe
