The characters were known as "Wilkins" (the one touting the coffee) and "Wontkins" (who always refused to drink it, suffering dire consequences for his stubbornness). "Wilkins", however, could be considered a "distant cousin" to "Kermit"...

I have a DVD of old-timey TV commercials and one of them was a cannon commercial with different dialogue and different voices. The creature says he won't drink any more Wilkins coffee. While the frog fires the cannon, the curtain comes down momentarily and then rises with the creature gone and the frog says, "Now he's not gonna drink any more coffee!"
