Hmm... when I was young I thought this was the greatest thing in the world, and now, I kind of think a lot of it at the begining is nonsense. When it gets going in a groove, it's pretty damn great. But, I don't want to rain on anybody's fusion parade, but I realize now why I stopped listening to my considerably large fusion collection----- too many notes, too much starting and stopping... and I can see why the punk movement arose in the late 70's. I know I'll be crucified for this comment
@johnshipe Sit down with a guitar and the sheet music for this and see how easy it is compared to any punk song I've ever heard. The musicianship is so far beyond punk music. This is truly music for the musician.
@skaterat121 Oh, I have & I know. Progressive and fusion were my whole life when I was a youngster.Level of difficulty counts for something, but a lot of 70's (& early 80's) composition, as it dates, seems indulgent, excessive, tedious, and at times boring. This is one of the better pieces from the era, but parts of it have me impatient. (My absolute favorite albums are two Bill Bruford masterpieces with Alan Holdsworth, Jeff Berlin and Dave Stewart. Also, the Jeff Beck/Jan Hammer stuff.)
@johnshipe I see your point, but I think in some ways punk is just as self-indulgent as prog/fusion.Punk to me, in musical terms, is like: "yeah, lets get really loud and undynamic just to prove how stupid and pretentious prog players are!" The irony is that in taking that approach, lots of punk became just as pretentious and boring as some prog/fusion out there.
Nice to see some know who good musicians really are. Nice that Al plays with his hero John McLaughlin and Paco. de Lucia. Yeh, Hendrix was an innovator, but stoned out of his mind - I'd probably play like that in his condition. McLaughlin is a better innovator and Al Di Meola doesn't even like being judged by his early music. How good is that? I mean, he is real class.
I don't know who the idiot trying to compare Jimi Hendrix to Al Di Meola .. just don't go there .. you can't compare the 2 ... one had the education the other, fricking brain dead stoner ... thats not music ... Jimi had his time, killed himself before becoming more than he could ever know ... but you can't compare the 2.
Most guitar instruction DVDs take five minutes to work out, yours took me a few years. Thanks for making it so difficult. But the music is incredible. I never forget the Maha Vishnu Orchestra at Festival Hall in Melbourne. Cosmic.
Saw him with Return to Forever around 1980 at the Auditorium Theatre in Chicago, doing the Romantic Warrior show. Astonishing, virtuoso musicians, performing unusual music as a group. It was a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Also saw Al perform at the Park West in Chicago, solo. He is a great joy.
Saw him with Return to Forever around 1980 at the Auditorium Theatre in Chicago, doing the Romantic Warrior show. Astonishing, virtuoso musicians, performing unusual music as a group. It was a once-in-a-lifetime experience.
his ability to come up with riffs and melodies is amazing in each song there are like 20 melodies that stick with me, the only problem i have is when i remember them and i want to listen to the song i cant remember what song it was loool
My mum introduced me to this, she listened to this in her 20's, she was lucky enough to have discovered this great music like this in her 20's, SHE STILL LOVES IT. this music is a real Journey
@TheCosta5000 When you realize that this album came out in 1977, makes it even more fantastic. His quitar style is timeless, a true master of the instrument. And I think he was 21, too. Not that that means anything.
@daddybug101 yeah he is a true master they dont make them like him no more i was like 3 when he pulled this off my only regret is that i only found this maniac just a month ago ive missed out on a lot of listening pleasure ill make up for it dont worry
@minjoem Opening up your mind would be accepting that some people don't hear the things the way your hear it. Don't mind the dislikes and enjoy the tune with all your being. Great tune.
I wish thee wasn't the sythn in the background, typical on the period. But great playing here, I always turned my head to he's recordings and now I think I'm getting hip to that Di Meola existence.
This man is so amazing.....I will be seeing him the end of March at the Berks Jazz Festival in Reading PA. I've been waiting for years to see this unbelievable guitar virtuoso!
To compare musicians is to piss in the wind, even if their styles are nearly identical. If the world finally conceded that one musician was superior in every way to another, what will you have gained for having been on the correct side of the debate, anyways? The answer is nothing. Quit making pointless, futile arguments and perhaps you won't look like such a collective of douche nozzles.
I watched Return to Forever live on BBC and was blown away then all the solo albums from the menbers came and that did my brain in also whatever hapened to good music..... creative music....you know? music that when you hear it you say "wow never heard anything like this before" those days have gone
Silly to compare Hendrix with Dimeola as JH died so young. He was about to collaborate with Miles Davis before he died so we'll never know what may have been...
Whar we do know that Al Dimeola is not only a brilliant guitar player, but an equally great composer and arranger. He was around 21 when Elegant Gypsy was recorded and has never stopped growing as an artist. My favorite work is his tribute to Astor Piazzola.
Listened RTF in Pori few years ago. Best thing ever. The whole pack: Corea, Di Meola, White, Clarce. Next sunday back to Pori. Going to see the man almighty Jeff Beck.

@Kolenekeo I disagree completely with you saying I can't compare DiMeola with Hendrix. Have you heard any of the fusion that Jimi was doing before his death? But beyond that, for virtual raw talent with an instrument, Jimi Hendrix is unsurpassed. He didn't have the schooling that such a great virtuoso as Al did, but his intuitive grasp of the technical and artistic format of the electric guitar was outstanding. I'm sure DiMeola would give Hendrix a nod if you asked him.
I haven't heard this for so long and it still is amazing....thank God there are musicians like this still out there.....very inspiring.....Al is so cool
Dimeola is in the Jimi Hendrix league. The man is an unbelievably gifted and creative guitarist. His blending of jazz fusion, Spanish, and hard rock elements works fantastically. thanx for the post.
You seriously wrote that James Marshall Hendrix was not a virtuoso? Man, have you truly listened to what that cat did with electricity in it's infancy? @WELLBRAN Why do people keep comparing musicians. Jimi had his time. And Al is on a whole other league and Jimi is on another league both great musicians. Wow, I got goosebumps near the end...
Is that Steve Gadd on drums? It sounds like his style and tuning.
This makes even top tier Punk (like the Clash's London Calling) sound like Mary Had a Little Lamb.
