Gee youtube is full of some serious drama queens. Even if it wasn't special effects (which it was) touching the side of a circular saw blade isn't particularly dangerous.
The saw blade is given an electronic signal that sensors monitor constantly. If the signal on the blade drops below a certain range, a spring-loaded aluminum block is released into the blade which stops the blade in approximately 1/200th of a second. This probably has a different kind of breaking system but, none the less, no theatricals involved.
I should probably mention at this point that this is actually a trick done with special effects. Maybe I'll put together a video that shows how it was done. Don't worry, my finger was never in any danger. 8)
I tried it an I cut my fucking finger off! My lawyer wants to know how he can contact you asp!

I can do that trick, although a little differently. What I do is I press my finger on the button that says 'off' and somehow that stops it spinning.

This is not impossible. With the right momentum and pressure, you can stop the blades. Did this once with a ceiling fan.
