  • I saw a black girl !!!

  • its in Hawaii so im guessing their not asian but hawaiian...

  • our high school band tried this song and ,well our ride crashed and burned

  • hehe hehe Asain.

  • C'mon Soloist needs to express more omg...

  • sax player has dimples , kewl

  • is that an asian with an afro? 0:49

  • @atrapsian They slowed down way too much and it completely took away the intensity of the piece. Also during the alto solo, sorry about sounding like I'm bashing you guys, it was really slow and he got carried away with timing and it didn't sounds as good as it could have. Good job overall though on the piece. I play alto and it took some work getting down that solo part so I understand.

  • i play that solo in band! im a freshman... and beat out 2 seniors for it

  • Superior!

  • i swear all of their band groups kick ass - ive heard most of them - symphony , and high school orchestra r so good - and their wind ensemble is awesome and so good - im in a wind ensemble , yea we are good but probably not as good as u all anymore - our really good musicians left our school :/

  • they're not Asain. they're Hawaiian.

  • this is an awesome performance!!! Marion Arkansas High School Band will be performing this piece! Good luch MHS!

  • it sounds undertempo and the sax solo wasnt that good...

  • i love the part at 2:05 where the french horns have that little melody with the glockenspiel our band is playing this and i love it

  • yep...it doesn't count. they're mostly asians therefore, it doesn't count. asians are good at everything.

  • @uberdethkil That makes no sense. Just because they're Asian means that it doesn't count? They worked hard for it. So that means that if a band group or other races, such as white, would mean that they are better even if these two bands are on the same level?? God made us equal and if we work hard enough, we can be good at what we do. Just because you're Asian means you're automatically really good. I have seem tons of Asians who aren't good at everything and that applies to every other race.

  • @randomjohn13 It seems that people like to say things like "God created all men equal" when in reality, we know it is quite the opposite. I mean just look at everyone.

  • Hmph. A bit rushed at start. Oboe's not bad at all. Alto sax Solo "messed up" a bit but that's within liberty I guess. Overall tempo is a bit... I don't know. Sure, you don't need to play 100% as written, but going against the description (you end with Presto and 'faster than initial tempo' at the end, not slower) is another thing.

  • That's one good sax player on the solo. I did this on soprano. Took me 4 months to get it down.

  • awee the sax soloist has dimples. this piece is amazing i play oboe in my highschool band and we did it, i absolutly loved my solo.! this is a great song if you like a challenge. (:

  • Asians... I always see this- Technically perfect, but lacking emotion and expression. I've never known asians to be able to perform even the slightest Rubato in an ensemble- it always falls apart.

Also the percussionists need to man up and hit that goddamn instruments in the part where they play with their hands, and their grip is HORRID. Makes me want to shoot myself the way those idiots are holding the sticks... uhg.

  • Were playin this for all state

Nice Afro bass drum dude lol

  • Why is everyone in this video asian?

  • @tickgoonhome they're in a school in hawaii.

  • The school is in Hawaii, large Asian population there.

  • @tickgoonhome They're Hawaiian. :/

  • @tickgoonhome whats so bad about that? =.=

  • @tickgoonhome This is in Hawaii.

  • @tickgoonhome They're not, they're Hawaiian. As in, this is from a Hawaiian high school and, therefore, from Hawaii.

  • is it just me or is there like 20 percussionists squeezing on that top level?

  • Wow. Nicely done!!

  • This sounds really pretty and cool :)

I hope my band gets to play this XD

  • i played dat sax solo!

  • I LOVE SAM HAZO!! we did to marching shows of his work in high school, as well as concerts stuff. Ride is the funnest song to do in marching band lol :D

  • lol i liked the afro base drum guy

  • I actually seen Hazo in person this past Tuesday. Hes a very funny down to earth guy. He conducted a high school honor band performance that is arranged every year by a nearby university. All three of their performance peices were by Hazo, which is why he came to direct the performance. It was a very cool experience.

  • Wow, this is a great high school band! What a great performance of the piece.

  • My band teacher told me I'm doing the sax solo next year. Should I worry?

  • Played this for contest, fucking epic.

  • were playing this song but it says it was meant for the university of toledo college and were kinda screwed

  • sax soloist could of used more vibrato

  • god i hate that sax solo

  • They looked very crowded on that stage!! lol The percussion was against the wall in the back!

  • ooooh my band is playing this song for our concert this year!!!!!!

  • This is on my list of dream songs to play. Haha.

  • played this senior year first alto sax great song and solo......

  • Does someone have a tuba part for this?

  • I hope some one puts up an Alice High School recording of this. We are playing it this year and it sounds good. The alto solo is amazing.

  • why do they have marching snare in an orchestral setting?

  • @meatwad314 might be a field snare

  • @meatwad314 uh nvm

  • Wow brigns back memories i remembered when my concert band played this in highschool. It is a really intense piece and requires a lot of mastery and technique in practicing. though i had a lot of fun. I remember looking over the alto solo part and thinking "boy do they have it bad on that solo lol

  • rushed??

  • Did someone got the baritone BC or euphonium sheet for this song?

  • A lot of my friends have been dying to play this for a long time and now we finally got our chance! But this band sounds nice!

  • Is it me or does the sax solo seem a little dull and slow? and the last part was a bit sloppy

  • the players seems intense while playing it

  • @krnboi93 have you seen the alto solo, im playing it this year and the last part of the solo with the palm keys is hard, but that diffucult this alto player should have been able to work it out in a week.

  • Yes I'm the second chair of the alto sax section and yes its hard and requires practice to master. Me and my section leader (1st chair alto) has been working on that solo for over 3 months now and we mastered every note/tone/articulation/rythm to that solo.

  • I've played this, it's fun and kind of a bitch at the same time! lots of wierd intervals trumpet players aren't used to.

  • Nice sax solo!!! Good song!

  • Nice. But I think the intensity of the piece was lost by 00:46

  • Yeah I agree. This piece is supposed to be intense

  • does anyone happen to know where i can find just strictly the timpani part for this piece?

  • Wait, does that guy have a afro? That's....random and funny at the same time.

  • ahh we're playing this for uil! hah and i hope we dont get crowed in a corner like their percussion did! lol

  • where can i get the flute and sax parts at??

  • I have the flute part and maybe piccolo

  • I did this last year I got goose bumps listening to it again lol

  • Nice job, I am a band dad from So Cal. Most of these folks probably are in college now. Sounded great, two thumbs up!

  • ughhhh im afraid to learn that sax solo!!!

  • just a tad too slow.

  • I love how the percussionists are crowded in that corner. This was awesome.

  • My band is marching this and the song rocks

  • lol the first 3 bars were rush

  • Probably just due to the volume in respect to the rest of the band, but the solo sounds rather tentative.

  • My high school played a version of Ride arranged for marching band. It was off the hook to say the least. :)

  • why are the percussions are all cramped toward the edge of the stage?

i think they deserve a better placing...

but indeed, it was a great playing....love it...the sax solo was kewl...

  • we played this two years ago....wish we played it like that! amazing !

  • I love this piece. I played the Timpani part and it was very enjoyable. The use of the hands on the percussion instrument really impacts the piece. Hazo is amazing!

  • Sounds great! It seemed to me that it was mainly woodwind-dominated throughtout, which kinda dissapointed me because this is such a... well, BRASSSSS piece. For instance, at 3:07 i didn't hear hardly any trumpet in comparison to clarinet and oboe. It could be the quality of the camera and my speakers. But it really was an excellent performance. Good job!

  • You're kidding! I'd say this piece is equally dominated by both. There are the hero brass parts for sure, but there's no denying the lyrical woodwinds features everywhere, including the middle section, which is just about completely woodwind-colored. Not only is the melody and solo woodwind, but the harmony and rhythm parts are as well.

  • You're right, Samuel Hazo made use of both sections to just about equal degrees, if not the woodwinds more so than the brass. I guess I'm just used to hearing the brass stand out more in the hero parts. Typical, me being a trumpet player myself!

  • OMG SHIVER DOWN MY SPINE

god i loved playing that sax solo....GREAT JOB YOU GUYS!!!!! we had a really small band - no oboes, no tubas, only five clarinets, and only one french horn and two saxes. but seriously, this was like listening to a professional band play. NICE WORK!!!!

  • This piece is the Rocky Point Holiday of the 21st century, and that is not a compliment to Mr. Hazo.

  • man, thats kewl, our band played this song, i had the sax solo, very hard

  • yay!!! clarinet closeup!!!

  • wooo hooo i LOVE this song!!!!!!!!!!!!!! that sax solo is the greatest thing EVERRRRRR

  • if you know anything about how sound projects from snares.. you'd know that it does project and in this song at that part its all about the sax and oboe solos so the snare doesn't need to project...

  • true but i cant hear it at all! i can hear it in patches around 1:04 but thats pretty much it... maybe its just the recording! really though, why not just use sticks and play softly near the rim? by the time the sound gets past all those winds, the timbre is going to be exactly the same as what he's trying to achieve with the finger-tapping anyway, and then we'd actually be able to hear it! what do u think?

  • its still written to be played with the fingers.. and more than likely it is the recording. we played this same song and it came through just fine with the finger-tapping..

  • @lisa0525

  • he's doing it because that's what Hazo wrote in the part.

  • and yet somehow that doesn't magically make me hear the snare drum any better...

  • when i played this on euphonium in 2008, i played the whole thing up an octave starting at 3:00 and it sounded awesome. The double Eb soared above all and made a judge turn his head and jaw drop.

  • i wonder if there's any possible way to use this in a marching show...

  • seen it done, epic fail

  • Thats going to be our marching show next year. It's called "The Ride of Your Life." Going to have a roller coaster theme with four movements, each representing a different year of high school. We're getting it commissioned for us and Ride is going to be our closer.

  • it has been done, its not so good w/o the oboes.

  • excellent job! =]

  • Well done y'all! ;)

  • We play this in concert band! I absolutely love it!

  • oboe solo AMAZINGLY WELL PLAYED as well as the sax solo great job soloist

  • we played this for high school marching band one year, and i still love it.

  • Measure 37 was really too bad. The clarinets stuck out like a sword. The Oboe solo is amazing... along with the Sax Solo, as he was loud enough, and did everything correctly. And then from measures 75- 94, the part lacked an energetic feel to it. It might have lacked some faster tempo... Measures 112-114, the clarinets really struck out again... Finally from 144 on, I felt the tempo was quite slow.

Overall it was a good performance.

  • um... prick much?

  • lol? i want to critique it. got a problem?

  • Omygod. this band did a GREAT JOB! Seriously, holy crap. I love the alto sax solo at 54. I might do it, and it gave me a great feel of what the song was like.

It reminds me of Vesuvius, haha. Great piece.

    Samuel Hazo is genius.

  • omgeeee! my band's playing Vesuvius this year! haha. crazyyyy!

  • that song was sooo funn & easy!!

  • oohhh very nice blend and balance.... but the 2nd and 3rd clarinet trill two measures after 42 should come out a little more lol

  • my school played this last year as a marching band song...twas amazing...pain in the ass to march though

  • do you know where i can get a recording of this? I looked on itunes, but they don't have it. If You could tell me, i would really appreciate it! thanks!

  • i love this song! such a jazzy feel to it. this is one of the best renditions ive heard yet. excellent job!

  • I played this last summer at the University of Delaware Wind Ensemble camp. My sister had the sax solo and, considering she only had a week to learn it, kicked it's ass!

  • I love the sax solo

  • i love this song!

  • wow, the percussionist looks so concentrated. :O

  • that song is hard. its meduim- professional and u guys 0wned it

  • its not that bad..

hell, if my highschool band can play it and we have freshmen playing its not that bad.

  • i hate how people underestimate freshman.

im a freshman and i dont mean to brag but im pretty good.

it just bothers me that people say, well if a freshman can play it then i can play it.

because there are freshman out there that can play and play well.

  • amazing!

  • that was awsome!

  • My band's playing this! Kick ass song. Love it! The sax solo, our current sax hits it like crazy! I'm first bassoon so the runs are insane but I love it!

  • our marching band was the first band that ever marched this song, and we kicked major ass making it to nationals

  • cool, wht school do you go to?

  • yeah we did this for indoor percussion so that was pretty interesting. but hazo is definitely the best current composer. check out olympiada.

  • ooo. we did this piece last year and are currently working on olympiada.

    its SOOO much funn

  • my band is playing this and we need aliitle more work but i know it'll get there.

  • we played this as well. I know the guy this song was written about, too! :)

  • haha this is at a very fast pace lolz.

i think this is way faster than normal speed the composer wanted.

  • actually, its a teensy bit slow compared to how we played it, but then again our director is insane and plays everything at at least 20 tempo markings faster than the suggested tempo....

  • lol! does he like fast or just want everything to be over?

  • he just likes energy. good news is that we've learned to keep up, so when we play slightly slower stuff its easy now.

  • it sounds better as a sax. but good.

  • Whoa... Clarinet solo was the bomb... We played it on alto sax. Not as good...

  • Wow.

  • good performance, just need to keep steady tempo.

  • i luv this song

  • we played that last year for our band trip

  • marching to those time changes must be fun, hahaha, itd be so funny to make a techno or dance piece like this and play it in clubs, so people go from oooh yeeeeh heres the beat oh yeh im so sexy look at me dance, to OMG WHERES THE FUCKING BEAT 1? AND WHAT HAPPENED TO 3 AS WELL!!! ahhhh, lol, so many people would fall over, it would be lol.

  • it is really fun to march to this. my high school did this show last year.

  • what hs did u march with? ive seen some high schools do u this in marching too

  • Mabank High School..its not up on the tube though..the recording i have of it from BOA grand nats was prolly one of our worst performances =/

  • oh haha ok

  • well actually i just put it up lol, even though its horrible quality and one of our worst performances its better than nothing

  • i dont think there were enough mics around the brass sections

  • I love the set-up it looks clean, but its kinda strange. This band played this piece execellently.

  • hey guys i go to this school 0:26 at that moment hes really good the majority of the people in moanalua high school compete in national parades, show, and competition and some of them can go to texas programs!!!!

  • awesome! our high school band is rehearsing this right now damn they're good!!!

  • are you guys a hawaiian band?...this is pretty cool!!!

  • We marched to this song!

  • Wow, this is great! :) And I'll be playing this in Ames this year, too!

  • why is the band set up sooo weird

    clarinets in front?

    flutes hidden in the back?

  • yeah, i agreed...y is the set up looks weird. My band sets up the flutes and clarinet infront with saxophone, brass behind and percussionsat the side...

  • Nice, in tune and talented...but not excessive clarinet section. Our band lacks that. Great overall sound with the band here!!

  • the alto sax was amazing.

    the whole performance was amazing!

we're doing this for our varsity band soon:D

  • "Exultate" by hazo is better i think.

  • GO HAWAII !!!!!!!!!!!

  • hey i'll see you in ames then, whoever u are...lol. the alto sax part is pretty awesome too!

  • Iowa All-State band is performing this in a few weeks. I can't wait. The bass clarinet part kicks ass.

  • this song kicks ass in general...

  • yea! we're playing GS move III

    ascend, right?

  • Yep. And "Rivers" (part II) has to be the most amazing, moving, and touching piece in the world.

  • We get to play it in band... I'm pretty excited. =]

  • I played it 2 years consecituvely. It owns.

  • georgian suite

  • love this dude's music! anyone seen G.S move. III???

  • G.S.? please explain

  • awesome song!

  • I tried to get my band directors to let our wind ensemble play this, one said no and the other said it was gay :( I think it is a really cool piece, I really l;ike this recording too because woodwinds are amazing and theres not too much high brass which brings them out a lot more :)

  • I'll agree that the woodwind parts sound great, but you need to have great brass parts too, which is why Olympiada, composed by Samuel R. Hazo, is great. It has great brass parts, woodwind parts, and percussion parts.

  • more brass please

  • this song got us sweepstakes award at a heritage muaic festival

go torrington High School band 07-08

  • We played this in our band last year.. Miss it so much. =[

We got a standing ovation from it though.

  • lol at the bass drum player with the massive afro! :)

  • seems no one can play the sax solo right to the dot ! well, me included ! though its a really good attempt ! :P
