An athlete's dad gave me a link to this excellent YouTube website.
I especially agree with MsCorrectly's great advice.
I made a website about VCD, back in 2001, since both my husband and I had VCD in 1998 and 2000. The title of my website is, Can't Breathe? Suspect Vocal Cord Dysfunction! My cell phone and email are on the homepage.
Good luck to all. VCD is usually very curable, when causes are looked for, found and removed or gently treated.
@MsCorrectly For Nutritional ideas you might want to find out if you have acid reflux cause it is very common with people that have VCD and it can make VCD much worse there is a diet that you can follow to control acid reflux which you doctor can give you. As for getting helium filled balloons you can usually get those at dollar stores and also note that the helium only works for a few moments
I have this too. Found out last year, but can't get to a speech therapist anytime soon. It's just too expensive. I am a novice runner and do okay in the summer when it's humid, but when the Arizona monsoons disappear and it's back to 6% humidity levels, it's a bit challenging. I won't be sucking on balloons though! haha.
my story is this exactly. well, except the balloon part. i actually went to voice therapy & they taught me how to control it with breathing through my stomach. it also helps if you only breath through your nose, because it is impossible for the chords to lock if you arent breathing through your mouth. Its also helpful to breathe out like you would if you were blowing OUT OF a straw. for some people a certain type of inhaler works for this. it didnt help me though the breathing things did though
How do you know the helium is only 20% ? How long do you take the helium before you run? My daughter has vocal cord dysfunction but is a soccer player. Have you ever had any harmful effects from the helium? Thanks
Helium can be dangerous if you take it straight but the helium that you put in balloons is only 20% helium and 80% oxygen so it is a sage amount so if you do use helium only do it from a helium balloon

@sirus13019 I am a xc runner as well and have Vocal cord dysfunction too...
What are your main strategies to combat it while running???
People have told me to "breathe through my stomach" but it still doesn't seem to work that well...
It would be great if you could basically tell me everything you do... thanks

I can tell you that yes it does help but only to an extent so i do still have a tough time with my breathing but it makes a considerable difference.
