yesterday (14/7/09) I saw this wonderful opera performed by Teatro Bolshoi in Teatro alla Scala in Milan. Althoug it was quite good (except for the staging and sets which were AWFUL) it was far far away from this truly perfection. Grazie Mirella
I too was lucky to have been in the audience for this wonderful production of Onegin. She doesn't do it here but the night I saw it, during the instrumental section before the final notes of the letter scene, Freni threw back her head and laughed as she was finishing the letter, with girlish glee. It was lovely.
How wonderful. It's so moving and truly admirable. I love this aria, it is my favourite aria. i was quite concerned about her Russian at first but it is perfect. she is so fluent and professional. Nothing looks awkward. i wish I had been alive when she was at the height of her career so i could see her singing live.
I remembered seeing this Chicago Lyric Onegin when I was just 18. It touched me on both levels- as a young woman and as a singer. God, Freni is so spellbinding that you almost don't even see the subtitles! I can't take my eyes off her- the complete singer and actress!! kawai1 said on her other video of this scene that he didn't know how she could sing in Russian- her hubby was Nicolai Ghiaurov... and it's called training! It's the same way I sing in Italian, French, German, Latin, etc.
yes he was Bulgarian, but he spoke many languages, including Russian. Most singers have to have more than one language & I'm sure during Ghiaurov's 5 years at the Moscow conservatory he learned to speak Russian fluently. Besides, being a slavic language there are many inherent similarities. All in all, Freni's command of the language, however and from whomever she learned it, is awesome and her singing even more mesmerizing! :)
Incredibile incredibile!!! Non ci sono parole per descriverla! Fenomenale, grandissima Mirella! la più grande Tatjana di sempre, in questo ruolo non teme veramente confronti!!
This is really an incredible scene. I didn't know Freni could sing in Russian, and was a little skeptical before watching, but it had left me speechless. Bravo!
Meravigliosa! Wunderbar!

Per questo repertorio ci vuole la voce "fresca" giovane.
Manca squillo nella sua voce e la bellezza "russa".
Per il suo coraggio,brava!

I agree with what you wrote, but correct me if I'm wrong - Ghiaurov was Bulgarian, not Russian.
