Great!!!!!!!!!Neuhaus is underappreciated as a musician. He is best known as the teacher of Richter and Gilels, but he was no less( possibly even more!) fascinating musical personality. Thanks for posting
What great pleasure it must give to a performer who loses his sanity while playing yet still keeps those nimble fingers moving with accuracy! A heavenly soul with a worldly body...satisfies both the spirits above and the mortals below...perfect union and harmony.
The greatest interpretation I´ve heard so far, along with rubinstein´s, lipatti´s and sofronitsky´s...I never get tired of listening to this gem, and again thanks for posting all the videos you have posted so far!
Hi there! Thanks for all your Neuhaus videos, specially for this! As a young pianist, this is an inspiration for me! I love this piece, and I love the way he plays it!
thanks! And yes, I know that it´s really difficult to master, but who cares? It´s one of my favourite Chopin masterpieces, and one of the most beautiful he ever composed!
This is one of my favorite pieces ever, how I wish I could play it. I just finished reading Neuhaus' book "The Art of Piano Playing" and this performance encompasses all of it: from the artistic image, to rhythm, to tone, to technique. Where did you get all of these recordings from? You wouldn't happen to have any actual videos of his performances would you? Thank you so much for everything.
I don't have any video, but there are couple clips available on YT - old documentaries... As for recordings - search Google for "Heinrich Neuhaus CD" and you'll find practically everything.
The cream of the most exquisite performances by the very greatest legends of the pianoforte, all posted within one month's time of one another. one has only to sit and from click to click enjoy the week's worth of aural sublimity. Isn't it a bit scary how not sacred and accessible all of this has become, that we can enjoy the highest achievements of cultural refinement like so many peanuts? The decadence!
Dear Cabby, I can assure you that the world at large does not engage in posting these gems here on Youtube. You do not really mean to discourage Truecrypt do you? The decadence(if any) is in ourselves sitting on our asses behind the computerscreen instead of..well, whatever.Hey, just enjoy, this music now for the millions, why not?
this is one of the most distinguished works of the pianolitterature, according to me. as for this pianst. this is so lovley! thank you very musch for posting this!
Heinrich Neuhaus would laugh politely if he would read your analysis. His quote:
"With an artist like Richter, two or three rhythmical divergences are more expressive and meaningful and work much stronger than hundred "rhythmical freedoms" taken by a pianist who doesn't have this sense of harmony and whole."
Dear Sherman, I never use a metronome. If you think there is no connection between Neuhaus' statements and his playing, you should study more. Read "The Art of Piano Playing", very interesting, especially for a confused guitarist...
Dear Poelstra,As the last great Baritone Mattia Battistini of Czar Nicholas II said when asked about his method..."It's all in my recordings"...and so it is here for Neuhaus.
Dear Smith, have you read Jonathan's comment here?
"I just finished reading Neuhaus' book "The Art of Piano Playing" and this performance encompasses all of it: from the artistic image, to rhythm, to tone, to technique."
Dear Erwin, while you're engaged in reading worthwhile books on music...I'm engaged in Building historic guitars and preparing to record two albums in 3 weeks.
Dear Smith, Good Lord, is it really going to happen this time? Why not three albums in two weeks? You know what, give me some samples and I'll put aside my books for a while and write you an *eloquent* review...
Good luck and if you need some books or scores for your preparation, let me know ;)

Nice sensitive interpretation although he seems to really struggle to articulate the trills especially.

Thank god that this performance has nothing to do with "Rhythm"...but is sheer expression in eternity...where no time exists.

This is the real thing. Masculine, erotic, emcompassing, timeless. Young aspirants, take note.

Beautiful Unrevised Historic Performance practice.Even his sforzandi are heavily rallentando-ed.Chords broken everywhere to accentuate expression.

Fabulous expressive focus instead of focusing on the literal printed music. The hands wander in & out of sync with each other masterfully.
As Czerny said on interpretation, underpin dynamics & articulation with flexible time.

Dear Erwin,Pure Unadulterated Equine Refuse.
You just get shaken when off your metronome.
Fortunately Neuhaus(like Ravel) talked in the stylish mode of the day...but played in the more expressive mode of yore.

All flexibility and no even measure.
