I think the Trans Am used for KITT has a higher clearance at the front and pack (or no skirts), so there's less chance of scrapping as the Trans Am goes up the ramp?

I have a 1988 Camaro iroc-z convertible with the 305 and 5 speed tranny. wonder just how much more difficult it would be to get up that ramp as soon as back tires hit. Not that i would try it personally, but i think it would be a little more challenging.

They did the experiment on a wet ramp, Had they done it on a dry ramp, I suspect the drivetrain would have blown out from going from 55mph to maybe 2mph really fast. Just a theory.

@TheNewVideos the only thing they could do in the tv-series is to take the ramp in slower speed and reduce the amount of frames per second making it look like 60mph while they in fact are driving in maybe 25-30mph, well mostly to the fact that it's costly for the movie/film company to have stuntdrivers if the actors want to make their own stunts...but this just confirms that the "myth" it's something you can do irl :D

@TheChill0ut why would they need to fake the ramp experiment? Guess somebody needs to brush up on his physics. It's a perfectly safe stunt if the driver is moderately skilled. As long as you can keep the car at speed and the steering precise, there is no need for stunt drivers or doctoring the film. Plus going slower is harder to keep things aligned.

@UnderManlac yeah but it costs more if the star of the movie gets hurt due to driving of the ramp full speed than it would be if he/she drove in less speed, and also didn't they point out that you could do it in less speed?..btw didn't say they faked the ramp experiment, but that in movies they make it less of a reality. @TheChill0ut The point is, the car has inertia at the speed it is going. The truck is moving at a slightly slower speed. The mass of the car keeps the car moving at that inertia, which is nearly matched by the truck.

Sure they could have filmed the sequence at a slower speed, but it isn't necessary. As long as you can aim a car at a ramp and keep the speeds constant, then there is little danger at full speed as to slower speeds. Maybe they're going 40 instead of 55.

@TheChill0ut The car can't accelerate up the ramp when the driving wheels land on it, unless the driver hits the accelerator. The laws of inertia don't allow for instant acceleration. In fact, one would likely have to push further down on the accelerator to bring the car up the ramp due to the weight of the car on the incline. Inertia will carry the car's momentum along only so far. There is no need to slow the car down while on the ramp. The car can't reach 55mpg on that short ramp.

@TheChill0ut Mythbusters proved it. In both experiments (model and real), the car maintained it's throttle position and was able to crawl up the ramp and park in the back of the truck with no danger. While going up the ramp, the car slowed down because it's inertia was maintained throughout. Now on a static ramp/truck, the car would shoot up the ramp at a little less than it approached it. While both vehicles are in motion, inertia will keep them at the same speed.

@TheGovinda777 The physics are exactly the same. The effect would be identical with either drive configuration. The only difference would be how the FWD components would react. Being that you are dealing with a horizontally opposed engine the torque now being in-line with engine rotation would stress the engine mounts considerably! Have you ever noticed that FWD cars are the ones with mount problems? There's a reason!

@johneastmond Thank you for clarifying this. Though somehow I feel a FWD car would likely lurch somewhat upon contact with the ramp while the rear wheels freewheel. Does that seem logical? I mean in a RWD he can maintain the same accelerator pedal pressure till the last of the rear wheels make it up, whereas a more skilled driver would likely be required for much more precise accelation control to prevent the front drive wheels from pulling it way too hard up the ramp.

The physics of rotational momentum of the engine and trans-axle would want to cause the drive train to buck around in the hood quite a bit! But the whole bit of the car rocketing up the ramp at some ungodly speed is junk! Not going to happen w/ either drive configuration.

@TheGovinda777 I can't see that front wheel drive and rear wheel drive would make any difference. If the car was fwd, then the rear wheels will freewheel, and the front wheels will pull the car up the ramp. In a rwd car, the rear wheels will push the car up the ramp, the front wheels freewheel.

The two vehicles are nearly at the same speed and inertia will keep it that way. The car can't instantly shoot up the ramp, it will maintain it's inertia.

I mean, think about it, the physics concept they used works great because the rear wheels are spinning at the same speed as the road below. Now, if you attempted this with a FWD car, it would likely lurch up the ramp WAY too fast and lose control/traction upon first contact, while the rear wheels spin at the same speed as the road below.
